Merrick: All the News that's Fit to Print

Jeffrey Jones does a splendid job with Merrick, even though his role isn't particularly sexy, dangerous, or funny. I really feel his excitement when he's putting out the paper, and wonder what it would have been like to be at the forefront of printing daily tabloids or whatever passed for newspapers then.

Merrick also sought the company of, and acceptance from other men.  Remember when a few guys happened to walk down the street together after their meal, and Merrick was so excited to be included in their cool boy's club that he proposed forming a club - of perambulators, or something?  He also seemed to take great delight in "befriending" the awesome Al Swearengen and the "secret  passageway" between their two establishments.  And who can forget his outrage at having his place trashed and a pile of dog feces on the floor.  Cy: "I don't think they had a dog with them".  Merrick's face was priceless.  :-)

Yes, the walkers club, that was lovely. I hope nothing happens to him next season.

The funny thing about that club is that in the breakfast scene and when they are talking Merrick is talking about how great it is to have conversations with other gentlemen. But the funny thing is all they talk about is how busy the restaurant at the Grand Central is, to the point where they go over the same thing two or three times. You would think that someone whose job it was to keep up on current events and tell stories would be better at conversation.

The secret passageway thing is weird. I remember it from the last time I watched the whole series. But in season 1 and into season 2, it is pretty clear that the Deadwood Pioneer is not on the same side of the thoroughfare as the Gem. It is a few doors down from EB's hotel on the same side. So unless he moved, how does that passageway work?

So I continue to watch and I am pretty sure I am right. In the episode where the school teacher comes to camp and Merrick gives her the tour they make it pretty clear that the Pioneer is right next to the Gem (that's the episode where the printing press gets smashed). But up until then it was pretty much shown that the Pioneer was on the same side of the thoroughfare as EB's hotel. Although to make matters more confusing I am watching the season 3 premiere right now and as Bullock is walking out of the Gem the words Deadwood Pioneer are clearly painted on the wall of a building you can see from the Gem's entrance.

As far as the passage way it doesn't seem to make much sense to me. I mean Al discovers it and acts like he didn't know it was even there. But if Al founded the camp, you have to think he built, or at least helped build/supervised the construction of the Gem. They never spelled it out, but they did say that Al was chopping down trees with Dan (either to clear an area I assume or for lumber). So how does he not know about this passage way for his building that he built or at least had built for him.
