S14.E06: Week 3

Recommended Posts

Movie Week! and fourteen couples dance to songs that challenge the choreographers to try to make the style fit the song.

And I think they did a pretty good job! But then I'm just happy this show still is mostly about Ballroom and Latin dances despite some boundary stretching here and there.

I'm liking this season. There really aren't any complete duffers, there are quite a few good dancers and and equal number of dancers who have the potential to get a lot better. Makes for good viewing. Even the comedy dancers can actually keep the rhythm and entertain!

- Ore and Joanne were my biggest surprise and my favourite of the night. Concurred with Bruno's comments.

- Danny and Oti's Paso was, as expected, really good. I love her so I'm glad she's got a contender and hope we see them all the way to the finals.

- Cloudia (hee) and AJ did an exceptional Charleston. I noticed a Janette Manrara split/flip trick early on (remember it from one of her auditions for SYTYCD). Perfect for Cloudia. I think I'm loving all the new Pros (even the ones without celeb partners.

- I've been surprised by Ed Balls. He's got musicality... and a sense of fun. His "Samba" was hugely entertaining at least. The new Katya (still miss the previous one) is really good for/with him.

- The other "humour" contestant, Judge Rinder, seems to be repeating the same shtick each week. Not as fun as when it was fresh and new. Hope he tries something else.

- Louise and Kevin fell a little short this week for me. She seemed tentative. Not sure why. Other tentative (or wobbly) celebs were Naga: she is so beautiful but never manages to look anything but tense. Having a technical glitch during her entry didn't help. Pasha can only do so much! (sigh)   Laura: she gives it a good go, but looks wobbly which detracts from the dance.

- Lesley and Anton's dance was a great throw back to Astaire and Garland. Lesley is impressing me. She's flexible, less wobbly than the younger women, has a lot of stamina and good performance skills.

- Greg (the male olympian) is improving - especially after bum-gate last week. What is it with the Brits and bums? He and Natalie gave a very romantic ballroom (forgot which dance style).

- Loved Will and Karen's Salsa dipped Bollywood number to Jai Ho. It created a controversy, but I just like the quirky ones I guess. Can't help myself. TPTB must have known that would happen.

- Daisy and Aljaz did a delightful "mediumstep" (music seemed slow to me), but were on first and it got eclipsed by flashier numbers. She doing well though. Slow but steady appears to be their plan.

- Tameka and Gorka's tango was full of aggression, and entertaining. Not as good as her 1st two offerings, but still good.

- And I almost forgot Anastacia and Brendan. Decent, if safe, VW.

Any show where the worst I can say is wobbly, or not spectacular, is a great show in my books.

I love AJ and Katya but I feel let down by Oksana - it may be just the language barrier (her blankness in interviews) but after all those years in the US it doesn't seem like it's the real excuse -- I think she may be too shy for this job. Now come on Oks, prove me wrong and speak up more and show some sass or sense of humor or something.  But then, Flavia was on the dull side and she was widely beloved so maybe she'll be ok.

I'm liking nearly all the celebs. I'm still getting over the shock of Will quitting and I hope he wasn't too rattled by Len's chastizing him - what was it? Show up and shut up - something like that. And maybe Will shouldn't have talked back about the amount of salsa but he was correct and it was a stupid thing for Len to be criticizing since I'm pretty sure they have an outside choreographer, not even Karen, who's at fault -- well, really nobody's at fault because the show itself wanted a stupid "Bollywood" salsa, certainly nothing to do with Will. Oh well, it is what it is...

My favorites are Claudia and Judge Rinder, but I don't really dislike anybody - except Anastacia, and I feel guilty about it but there it is. Her first dance was one of the sloppiest ones I've ever seen - and she wasn't injured then, and she seems a bit fussy or stroppy about everything. I feel sorry for her previous illnesses but it's not enough to make me like her attitude. It's just off somehow - entitled? thinks she's better than she is? or maybe it's just the crap dancing that occasionally looks elegant, like her VW.

Oh and Danny. I thought his posture was often hunched over, and usually Bruno jumps at the chance to stand up and demonstrate the "Spanish line" - so I'm suspicious that they're overmarking him because he isn't bringing in the votes. But that might mean he's our winner (is it time for a male?) I wish it could be Ore instead - I really loved his 'Singing in the Rain' number and was so happy to see such good choreography and training from Joanne.

I loved Tameka - and especially Gorka (but thought her dancing was poor) - and also Daisy and Lesley (and their dancing is great - except Lesley's posture and I blame Anton who won't lower his frame!)  I'm meh on Laura, despite knowing she's great - something seems off about the partnership - Giovanni overdancing for one thing. I also think Louise is one of the dullest dancers ever - I'd rather watch Naga - at least it's interesting to see how she copes with her anxiety or general misery or whatever it is, but Pasha sure looks checked out. Must not be fun behind the scenes. Well, anyway, she's luscious to look at!  I like Greg and Ed and moreso, their partners, Natalie is always invested but especially this year -- anyway, can't wait till tomorrow!
