I like that we now know why (spoilers for Season 4) - Spoiler El didn't speak much or know even basic terms such as 'promise' or 'friend'. Not only was she raised in a lab her entire life, but after she sent Vecna to the Upside Down the first time, she was raised with no other children around and literally treated like a lab rat.
