Shannon L. November 18, 2015 Share November 18, 2015 Based on the real-life event, when a gold and copper mine collapses, it traps 33 miners underground for 69 days. Has anyone seen this movie? I went in spite of the "meh" reviews because I wanted to see how they managed to survive that long and I didn't know all of the details of how they got them out. While I enjoyed the movie, I can understand the lukewarm reception, although I'm not sure how to explain why I feel that way. I feel like it could have been so much better, but am at a loss as to how (however, in the most pickiest of nit picking issues: I had a problem with the musical score. I usually either don't really notice it, or, when I do, it's the really good ones. The choices they made here in regards to the score bothered me). Anyway, there were some strong moments from most of the major characters and Antonio Bandaras could get a nomination only if it's a weak field for actors this year, but all in all, none of this was enough for it to be a great movie. I'm not sorry I saw it, but am glad I went to the cheaper matinee. Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/34713-the-33-2015/
A Boston Gal November 18, 2015 Share November 18, 2015 Argh, this is why I'm hesitant to see this. I was glued to the story when it was on the news, and watched the rescue mission as it unfolded. To see such a real life, compelling human drama turned into trope-y pablum is not my idea of an uplifting time at the movies. :( Dammit... SmithW6079 November 19, 2015 Share November 19, 2015 I saw it tonight and enjoyed it, but then, I enjoy most movies I see (because why waste your time otherwise?). I didn't think it was "trope-y pablum." No one character seemed particularly stereotypical. Even though we know the outcome, it was suitably tension-filled, and I cried when they were rescued. I thought it interesting that Bob Gunton, who played the Chilean president, also played Juan Peron in the original Broadway production of "Evita." Just in case... It was criminal that the mine owners were found not guilty of being criminally negligent and that the miners were never compensated for their ordeal. The desolation of the landscape around the mine reminded me of the Martian landscape in "The Martian." Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/34713-the-33-2015/#findComment-1727061
A Boston Gal November 30, 2015 Share November 30, 2015 Good to know, SmithW! I will certainly reconsider, and put this back on my list. Thanks for the new point of view! Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/34713-the-33-2015/#findComment-1759222
