Ships You'd Like To See

Recommended Posts

We've had a good variety of ships appear, from submarines to nuclear battlecruisers, hospital ships to fishing trawlers. Then there was that time Nathan James was tricked into thinking there was a HMS Suffolk around somewhere to help. So, what ships would you like to see in Season 3 (even if it's unlikely they'd appear.)

Personally, I'd like to see an expy of HMS Clyde come up from the Falklands via Ascension Island. It's a tiny vessel with not a lot of firepower, but with good speed and a longer range than Nathan James has. As an expy, it would have the Clyde's 30mm cannon and strengthened rear deck capable of carrying a helicopter. Having such a vessel tag along with whatever ship CNO Chandler sends to Europe to deal with the Immune Cult there, would add to the legitimacy of the operation, even if the patrol boat couldn't do much by itself.

An actual Nimitz class aircraft carrier. I mean, they are out there. There are ten currently in active service (though I think one of them is about to be decommissioned or at least overhauled) and run on nuclear power, so no need to refuel at all. And they've got Jet's. I'd like to see an F-18 Hornet or even a "lowly" F15 flying around.

I know we'll never see one, because a) money and b) availability to film on them, but they I can dream.

Which begs the question - where ARE the other battleships/aircraft carriers? I mean, a few had to be in the middle of the ocean with the virus hit. Did the Russians blow some of them out of the water. Or were they all ordered to port and subsequently the crew got all infected. If you are the US military, I would have definitely ordered at least two of the aircraft carriers to go silent and stay away from land (as they did with the Nathan James) just in case.

Too much thinking...

Things is, aircraft carriers never travel alone -- they always have a battle group accompanying them.  Maybe a cruiser, a couple of destroyers, some supply ships, maybe a sub.

With the exception of food and jet fuel, they could stay at sea for years -- lots of nuclear power, and they make their own drinking water.

How much air defence does the Arleigh Burke class have, anyway?

It depends upon the exact mission load out but they are designed as an anti air and anti submarine escort ship for the carrier battle group. Everything from the short range 20mm Gatling guns as a last resort when they shot down the Russians in the pilot episode to anti ballistic missile capabilities. The capabilities are so great that the US Navy is in the process of retiring its frigates as not good enough with about the same crew levels and its cruisers which need a bigger crew in favor of destroyers as the gunships with one cruiser per battle group as a command ship to take on a big air fleet attack

Cool. I know British destroyers and frigates are designed with air defence in mind. We don't want a repeat of Coventry after all.
