From what I dimly remember many of the contestants did talk about having to hand wash clothes for a large family, so a washer-dryer was exactly what they wanted. (Not everyone had a home washer-dryer in those days). And game shows prizes were more modest in that era. On shows that gave out cash, winning a thousand bucks was a huge deal. On "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho Marx I think the big prize was $500. The voting this week showed that producer and judge manipulation doesn't always get the desired results. They'd been pushing Siro-A probably harder than any other act, and Samantha Johnson probably harder than any other singer. Now both are gone. Edited September 7, 2015 by bluepiano Link to comment
