You are inspiring me to want to rewatch the first season. Even though the setup for Peter's appeal took so long, I forgot how early a lot other stuff happened. And now I can't say more because spoilers.

I have just started watching this series, courtesy of Amazon Prime, so am only a little ahead of you! Alan Cumming truly is the best, and I love Diane's new relationship. I especially love that although he doesn't share her opinions, he never lectures her about his own or tries to change her. (At least, not so far!)
