Meushell June 4, 2015 Share June 4, 2015 I wasn't thrilled with most of the auditions. I actually thought the puppet act was a big AGT joke. That was supposed to be an actual talent? Yikes! The reaction to the singing dad who lost his son made me uncomfortable. It felt like the death was being exploited. I don't think that was the dad's intention. Still...with the standing ovation and the judges laying the compliments thick, neither the singing nor the song seemed good enough for that reaction. I don't really blame the audience or the judges either. They're going to be extra nice with that story, especially with the song being about the son. That's why I wish contestants weren't allowed to share any background stories, at least until the finals. Then they got there purely on talent. The stuttering guy needs more material. An entire act about his stuttering got old real fast. He also made essentially the same joke three times during the GPS bit. 1 Link to comment
bluepiano June 4, 2015 Share June 4, 2015 (edited) I hate children's acts! No way is it good for a kid to be promoted like that. Primped and fussed with, lipstick on little girls, ack. I wish they would have an age limit, at least 16 years old to compete. Totally agree. And then one of the judges asked, predictably, if they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Really? At 7 and 8 years old. I know that's supposed to be cute. I find it creepy. It's almost like AGT is two different shows running simultaneously. There's the show where acts compete on the basis of their talent, as it should be. Then there's the second show where acts get put through on the basis of their human interest stories, In the first audition week we already have two of these acts, the singer who lost his son and the comic with the brain injury. Both of these are genuinely sad stories, but the problem is that they render it impossible to genuinely critique the acts. Despite the emotion behind it, that song was just not very good. Way too many words crammed into each line, so you could only understand about half of them. My favorite act of the night was the puppets, but mostly because of Miriam, the mother. What a great character. I hope she becomes the focus of the act. But since Miriam was off stage, talking to Nick, were the judges able to factor in that part of the act? (Ira's singing reminded me of Kermit the Frog.) Edited June 4, 2015 by bluepiano Link to comment
