Extreme Weight Loss in the Media

Making the press release all about the athletes seems like a blatant rip-off of The Biggest Loser: Glory Days:

[The season 5 premiere is] TUESDAY, MAY 26 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET/PT) on the ABC Television Network. Chris and Heidi Powell return as the transformation specialists and trainers for EWL, plus NBA greats Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Byron Scott and James Worthy will guest star in the episode.

Other notable guest stars in Season 5 will include three-time Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo, two-time NBA champion Chris Bosh (Miami Heat), NFL star LeSean McCoy (previously with the Philadelphia Eagles/currently on the Buffalo Bills), swimming champion Amy Van Dyken (six Olympic Gold medals), soccer great Mia Hamm (two-time Women’s World Cup champion + four-time Olympic Gold medal winner), actress and Autism advocator Holly Robinson Peete, and Mario Andretti (one of the most successful Americans in the history of auto racing).

And it says at the bottom of the press release they've started a camp just like Biggest Loser. I found the website: http://www.anschutzwellness.com/extreme-weight-loss-destination-boot-camp-form

They started casting for season 6 in January: http://www.extremeweightlosscasting.com

That press release pretty much made my decision to just say no this summer.  It sounds like a Jerry Springer marathon.  Hoarders, terminally ill husbands, shaken babies, too fat to conceive, parental abandonment...

And Heidi looks like she was created in a lab.  Overly white chompers, too-tight facial skin and bad acting.  Chris works on tv because he seems genuine.  Heidi just seems 100% phony in looks and personality.

Did anyone else see this article?

It's all couples this season—but Chris & Heidi have found a way to make it all about them:

ABC's Extreme Weight Loss returns for a fifth season on Tuesday, May 26, with a twist. This time, married trainers Chris and Heidi Powell are helping couples—whether siblings or spouses—meet their weight loss goals over the course of one year.

"It's interesting how we would coach one of our couples through a challenge they had in their relationship, and when it was all said and done I'd think, 'This is something that we struggle with too,' and it would cause some reflection on our part," Chris, 37, told Us Weekly ahead of the new season. "Sometimes that wasn't easy for us. Sometimes it would cause a rift between us, but breakdowns lead to breakthroughs."

Added his wife, 33, "It was nice to see how they interacted as a couple and to see the challenges they overcame together and how they grew from them, and then use their experience to better mine and Chris' relationship. This was definitely a trying year for me and Chris in a lot of different ways and I've gotta say if we didn't have our peeps—specifically the couples—to help us through our own struggles, we wouldn't be where we're at today."

So I guess this show got cancelled in favor of that other weight loss about about which diet is best?

I don't think so, unless there are no reports of Chris filming with new clients. My Diet is Better than yours is burning off episodes to bridge the gap for other shows on hiatus, while this show has always aired in the summer. It is an ABC summer staple.

Heaven just got a lot brighter today when Rod entered the pearly gates. While I am selfishly so sad and completely devastated that I won't get to see him on earth anymore, I am rejoicing for the spirit he is carrying with him and spreading to everyone up there...including my dad. Rod, you will be missed terribly. Everything from your kindness, to your warm smile and bear hugs, to your friendship, to you extraordinary ability to make ANYONE (including me) feel special. YOU are special. And will never be forgotten. Love you BIG, and can't wait to be welcomed into heaven someday with that one-of-a-kind infectious laugh of yours. Thanks for changing MY world, @roddurham. Now go do you up there, buddy!!!! -- Heidi Powell's Instagram

Really, Heidi? Way to make it all about you.

I remember his episode. I felt sorry for him to a degree (I did think there was a little bit of overacting). I wonder if the speed at which he dropped the weight affected his health. I've always thought the ridiculous goals Chris Powell sets can't be good for the participants.
