I think he just prefers not to sit at the table. I remember him once saying something along the lines of "and this is why I stay over here" after a bout of bickering between the others over dinner.

Clearly he prefers not to sit at the table.  Still, that doesn't mean he didn't sit at the table when only his parents were living there.  Maybe he's more uncomfortable with four other people sitting there.  And bickering.
