S04.E06: Interlude IV

Recommended Posts

Oh right, it's set in 2002. I forgot Eli and Aimee-Leigh were still having fallout after Y2K. And loved how they got the magazines and merch right. Hayden Christiansen posters and Jimmy Neutron shirts! And that's why there was a Brendan Fraser picture!

Baby Jesse still out there convincing us he's a shrunken Danny McBride and Judy as a little Edi Patterson, but shout out to Baby Kelvin nailing Adam Devine.

Lol, Gideon's name was originally Stallone. And after all the mess, Eli's the one that gave him the name. And really giving us that foreshadowing about inheriting the kingdom.

Yes, Michael Rooker learned how to water ski for this. At least in the closeup shots. So he was indeed our gold bible thief, but he doesn't seem like the type that knew the significance of it. Until he peeked inside. Man, this show's good.

Next time: More Teenjus! With a Satan right out of The Pick of Destiny.

They must have blended Danny McBride's voice with the kid actor playing him -- but other than that, these kids are some of the best casting ever to play younger versions of main characters.

I love the Aimee-Leigh episodes -- I know we've said it every time, but it holds true -- she really was the glue holding that family together. Even Eli's approach to get Jesse to give the kid a real name was much softer than we see him with the adult kids post-Aimee-Leigh.

Corey was protective and very brotherly toward Kelvin -- I wonder if that relationship will play out more for the rest of the episodes.

I didn't pick up on this, but wow does it make sense (this is from the AV Club recap

From Kelvin’s perspective, the mere hint of exploring his homosexuality sent a demon to his house to steal his father’s prized possession and the family’s most valuable heirloom. The Bible is clearly important to the kids but not so much to Eli, who doesn’t seem that concerned with it. He’s just happy that his kids are okay, even though he lets Jesse unknowingly drink some pee. Elijah’s stolen Bible symbolizes Kelvin’s stolen life, punishing him for ogling the likes of Brendan Frasier and Josh Hartnett and shoving him into the closet for the next 20 years.

And we must take a moment to honor Lori's mullet because it was. . . . a lot.

I like that Eli let Jesse drink the bourbon with the piss.

But is Jesse even suppose to be legal drinking age in this episode?

Already the kids are spoiled.  Seems Eli and Aimee Leigh didn't care about raising their kids the way they were raised, from humble origins. Instead it's let them do whatever they want, speak to them however they want.

Such a contrast in personality types between the parents and the kids.  Eli is a preacher but not a fire and brimstone type, outlandish, loud, flamboyant.

Aimee Leigh and Baby Billy, same thing, way different personality types.

As successful as the Brimstones are, they certainly have a lot of enemies along the way.  Are they polarizing?  Again stylistically, they don't seem to be, yet people were hating on Eli and A-L just for trying to get a permit to build a huge parking lot -- understandably they don't want all the traffic brought in to fill a 10-acre parking lot.

Pretty sure that's a reason why Eli waited til Jesse had a drink before telling him. He also smoked a cigar.

Remember that this was set in 2002, I'd imagine a good part of the community is still pretty mad at them for scamming them with the Y2K buckets.

Heh, Gideon has no idea how close he was to being named Stallone instead.  Of course, that would be Jesse's first choice.  Nice save there, Eli!

Always enjoy the Interlude episodes due to a) seeing more of Aimee-Leigh/Jennifer Nettles and how she impacted the family and b) continuing to watch how they nailed the casting for all of the kids.  Once again, the actors playing Jesse and Judy really feel like someone cloned kid versions of Danny McBride and Eli Patterson.  And the actor playing Kid Kelvin got to do a lot more this go around and shined as well.  Hell, even with less screen time, the actor playing the younger Corey shows a lot of the traits and characteristics that Sean William Scott has been doing so far in this role.

Not surprised Michael Rooker ends up being Lori's husband (soon to be ex), and was the one who stole the golden bible.  I wonder if it was simply just to make a quick buck or was it targeted?  Have to imagine this will all come to place in the present.

Despite their many, many flaws, I did notice how both Eli and Aimee-Leigh really didn't seem hyper focus on the damage and stolen items, and where more concerned about the kids and what happened to them.  I do think there is real love in this family, even if they don't show it all the time (oh, and Eli did knowingly allow Jesse to drink whiskey mixed with piss, but Jesse can always afford to be knocked down a peg or two!)

All the references to the 2002 era was great: especially all of the magazines and posters Judy had (and Kelvin was drawn to.)  I still remember the time Joaquin Phoenix was known more as a heartthrob and not the current eccentric; if award-winning; weirdo he is now!  And, of course, Brendan Fraser during peak Mummy era!
