Season 2 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Looks like all the episodes have now dropped on PBS Passport.  Are we allowed to discuss them before weekly airings?  I haven't watched any but episode 1 so far anyway, but I might watch more.  Whenever I watch ahead of weekly airings, I forget what I wanted to say by the time a post is allowed.

Maybe I will start a separate thread with spoilers.\

Meantime, I was a bit bored with the episode at the beginning, but then it improved.

Not impressed by this first episode of Season 2.  I enjoyed the beginning when Sophie pulled the light switch at the big Fair, and I also enjoyed the clothing (but I don't think that those metal low slung belts were a thing until a few years later).

Of couse Sophie had to accidently get stoned by eating brownies (rolling eyes here).  Can't do a show about "Swinging London" without a trippy party I guess.

I'm finding the romance really boring.   In real life, I'd think that Dennis would have sucked it up and let his wife file under "mental cruelty" and be done with it.  Now it will be all of this agita keeping him and Sophie apart or risk destroying her career.  I believe there was a female British pop singer who had an out of wedlock child, but I'm spacing on her name, and there was a scandal about singer Sandie Shaw being involved with a married man.  Then there was also all the nasty business with the late Marianne Faithful and a drug raid involving the Rolling Stones.  Female artists were held to a different standard.

One pleasure of this show is watching Gemma Arterton (now there is a name which would have been changed back in the day).  She is really talented, and I so enjoy watching her, especially wearing those fashions (I think she is really beautiful).  This show wouldn't be as watchable without her in it.   I'm just hoping that the future episodes are more interesting.

Back in the 60s divorce was probably seen as something just short of a diplomatic crisis, and to be avoided at all costs.  Even better to have separate lives without regard to the other party, rather than face the ignominy of d-i-v-o-r-c-e.  It's weird how we look on period shows with the lens of current day attitudes and policies.  Just call the guy from your car with your cell phone, for instance...

I really enjoyed the second episode. Dennis was perfect in getting pipe smoke asshole to break on camera, and you just knew his wife would be turned on by that. I do tire of the trope where Sophie sees part of something and misinterpret what she saw. And it was a shame she and her flat mate had a fight bc I really like the girls together in that flat situation.

Yeah, I liked that too.  I just wish he could have gone for a trifecta with the other pompous egos on the set, but pipe smoker was good.  Looking at the plethora of situation comedies on TV now, it's hard to think that they were once shunned.  How boring TV must have been.  I'd like to see the show really step out and give Sophie more creative control and let her hire some female writers to come up with Sophie-centered scripts.

Actually, I kept hoping that Dennis would reveal on camera, live, that pipe smoking a-hole was commiting adultery with his wife, and that way his wife would indeed have to cop to it and be the cause of the divorce so that Dennis and Sophie would be able to be together. And that would have been so satisfying to see that this blowhard caused his own downfall AND his side piece's divorce!
