Chris Brown: A History Of Violence

I watched this documentary earlier tonight, and frankly, this needs to be required viewing for everyone out there. Not just for the Chris Brown aspect, but especially because it so perfectly explains and highlights and answers all the common questions you always hear from people in regards to accusations of abuse and assault ("Why didn't they come forward sooner?" "Why don't they just leave?" "Why not wait for it to go to trial before condeming?" And so on). I really appreciated all the statistics, and the post-documentary discussion about why this stuff keeps happening and why people still continue to defend and support and excuse abuse and those who commit it, instead of siding with the victims.

As for Chris Brown himself, I didn't know anything about him or his career before his assault of Rihanna - that was the first time I'd ever heard of him. But I certainly remember the story being in the news, and I remember seeing those photos, and they were horrifying. I've heard of all the numerous fights he'd been in since then, but I had not heard about the rape accusations until this, and...ye gods. It just gets worse and worse.

And yet he still keeps getting by with everything. Still has people making excuses for him. At this rate he's going to wind up killing somebody someday, whether it's a woman he's hooking up with/dating or some guy he wants to get in a fistfight with. I don't know what it has to take to finally get serious about holding him accountable, but it's clear he hasn't learned anything and hasn't done shit to redeem himself or improve. Something needs to change, and it needs to change now.

I think the attack on Rihanna also proves that the argument of , "Oh, we just need evidence! Where's the proof?" that you always, always hear from victims is totall bullshit. There WAS proof with Rihanna. Blatant proof. Chris did not deny hitting her, either. They referenced R Kelly, there was proof there, too, in the form of a video.

And it STILL didn't do shit. So clearly, a woman can have all the physical proof and evidence in the world and that's still not going to save her or make people any more likely to believe her.

I'm also genuinely curious where all these supposed examples of women getting rich and living the high life off of these accusations are, that people seem to think that's so common and the only reason why any woman would make an accusation like this. I honesly cannot think of an example of a woman who lied about being assaulted and somehow got a nice, cushy life out of it. The very few instances I've heard of where a woman's claims were proven false, she was immediately made a social pariah. It's just insane that people STILL keep going to this well as a response to this kind of thing despite there being virtuallly no examples of that happening. Or at least, not enough for it to be a common thing.

I also think there is a LOT of truth to the idea that much of the defense of guys like this stems from a deep hatred of women that runs throughout society on some level. Not going to wade too deep into politics, for obvious reasons, but, I mean, we're seeing some prime examples of that in action right now. So it's sadly not surprising that that same mentality is rampant in our entertainment industries as well, or in our everyday lives.

I liked the bit in the post-documentary segment talking about the hairstylists and setting up a whole system there to help women who find themselves in these situations. I think that's a great idea.

Anywho, yeah, this was a very interesting documentary. Frustrating and maddening and depressing and horrific, but fascinating. And important.

I checked Max and the doc is indeed streaming on it. I looked back at Max's press release for its October releases and this doc was listed for October 27, so I missed it and the doc press release didn't mention it
