Back in February, NBC has given a series order to “The Hunting Party,” a drama series from JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn.

RELEASE DATE: TBA (2025) on NBC

CAST:

Melissa Roxburgh as Rebecca “Bex” Henderson - Shrewd, steadfast and obsessively curious, Bex is an ex-FBI agent recruited to an elite government task force due to her reputation as a savvy profiler who’s caught some of the world’s most dangerous serial killers.

Nick Wechsler as Oliver Odell - Bex’s former partner in the FBI and the love of her life, Oliver Odell is a charming, brilliant and often reckless profiler whose career at the bureau, and whose relationship with Bex, ended in disgrace.

Patrick Sabongui as Ryan Hassani - Rugged and world-worn but with a casual air, Hassani is a CIA agent tasked with managing the crisis.

Sara Garcia as Jennifer Morales - A bright and natural optimist despite her tough upbringing, Jennifer is an intel officer and major in the Army.

Josh McKenzie as Shane Florence - Selfless, sincere and charismatic, Shane is a former soldier in Iraq and a prison guard at a highly classified facility.

Kyra Leroux as Samantha Henderson - Precocious, funny and winning, Samantha is Bex’s 18-year-old daughter (via adoption) and a survivor of great trauma. In her first year at college, Samantha and Bex are both struggling being away from each other.

I get why TV writers do it, but I'm just over "The show is about This, BUT ALSO, there's a behind-the-scenes Conspiracy". I just hate that those things usually get drawn out forever with little progress, while at the same time getting more and more convoluted and non-sensical.

I guess the question is, why would you want to keep all your worst serial killers around if not for punishment? (Since that can happen in a non-super-secret prison.)

Q: Any scoop on The Hunting Party, now that Bex has more and more reason to be suspicious of Odell?

Regarding Oliver apparently knowing about The Pit’s imminent explosion and his hasty download of sensitive intel before hot-footing it out of Dodge, series lead Melissa Roxburgh teased for me, “We learn that he has an alliance, that he’s trying to figure out answers… and he did it for a reason that’s not as terrible as Bex originally thinks.”

Q: Anything on The Hunting Party‘s season finale?

The freshman NBC drama’s 10th episode, airing April 7, “will leave people intrigued,” teases star Melissa Roxburgh. “The way that they tie Season 1 up, I want to know what happens next. It’s a really, really interesting concept — I can’t say more about it — but I really want people to push through to the end because the payoff of what happened to the prisoners and who’s actually in charge of it gets completely flipped around.”

The Hunting Party Creator Explains That Big Shane Twist – So, That's NOT His Dad?
By Tara Bennett   Mar 10, 2025

In our exclusive NBC Insider post-mortem, series creator J.J. Bailey explains the long-simmering storylines that were finally introduced in this episode, including a twist concerning Shane's mysterious visits to his" father" and the secret off-shoot to The Pit, known as Silo 12.
*  *  *
The end of the episode also paid off with a big reveal around Shane when the man he's been visiting at the assisted living is revealed to not be his father. The staff, naturally, confronts him.
*  *  *
"Shane is a character that is near and dear to my heart," Bailey said. "His storyline was one that we came up with very early in the show, and we're really excited about the back half of the season as we finally get to it. One of the things we realized was necessary [early on] was to give Bex and Odell's storyline the room it needed in the front half of the season. But also to leave Shane as the trusted partner who doesn't have ulterior motives... at first. We had to build it out for this to really work later in the season. And now that we're getting to it, it's so fun for me."
*  *  *
Another big revelation came in the form of the annexed secret area of The Pit known to only a chosen few: "Silo 12." In this episode, Bex and Hassani confront Odell about Silo 12 — and he's hesitant to share too much. However, Odell finally gives up some information by the episode's end.

Bailey confirmed Silo 12 was a plot point they've been holding in their creative back pockets for a long time.

"We started talking about these tunnels underneath connected to other facilities, as we always knew some of these real missile silos are connected by tunnels to control centers and things. So, we knew there was the ability to expand into other spaces and see what they are," he explained. "In the show, when we actually get to Silo 12 and realize what was going on there, it blows it up in an interesting way. It was so fun to finally get there because we came up with that place, I believe, in the mini writers' room that we had before the writer's strike."

The Hunting Party EP Coburn on David Ramsey, Series Influences & More
Tom Chang   Mar 19, 2025

Bleeding Cool: What was the conversation with JJ [Bailey] that led to the initial spark of 'The Hunting Party?'
[Jake Coburn:]
I don't remember exactly what it was, but we talked probably for two, two and a half hours that first time. We found ourselves coalescing around a couple of different shapes, ideas, and the DNA of the show was born there. Obviously, we were both intrigued by serial killers and sort of like the MKUltra dark side of psychiatry and psychology, specifically government programs. If people aren't familiar with MKultra, it's a fascinating history, and The Pit became an opportunity to take it to a bigger level with bigger stakes and a higher concept, so we were drawn to that as well.

When it came to initially developing the lead for Bex, was it conceived with Melissa in mind, or did you play around with some other ideas?
No, we wrote it and got the pickup without any actors attached. I don't think there was a specific actor we had in mind for the role. Once we got the pickup, we did the additional auditions, and it was a challenging process for us because, for whatever reason, it's a specific character, and there's a lot of different tonalities that must be balanced, and there were not a lot of people we saw where we felt like they could be Bex. [Melissa] was one of them, and once she got in there, she owned it.
*  *  *
How do you break down the balance among the principal cast as far as delegating the roles? How did you sort out the parts they played after having Melissa come in as Bex, and then you had Nick [Wechsler], Patrick [Sabongui], Josh [McKenzie], and Sara come and round it out?
The character of Morales was added into the mix at a slightly later date, and that's part of the reason why Sara joins us in episode two "Clayton Jessup." She's amazing, and you'll see in episode nine she leaves the command center and is part of a mission. It gives her a chance to flex new, different muscles as an actress. I would say that the core four actors, we knew who we wanted as characters, and we dialed in on them pretty quickly.
