Does an underfunded & understaffed Family Violence Legal Centre need a Communication Specialist? They need more than one Jenny, that’s for sure.

I think Aisha Dee plays her role perfectly. Phoebe Rook is flawed but is still likeable. I like Jenny too. She’s fierce, overworked but not bitchy. I love Phoebe/Jenny interactions, there’s a supportiveness vibe to their dynamic. 💕

Cannot say the same with Phoebe’s roommate - Max though. He adds nothing to the narratives, other than being weird.

The flashforward scenes where Phoebe is running, breathing heavily and the jump forwards to the police interview room, they feel a bit repetitive.

In earlier flashbacks, Grace seems like a dominant wife and Julian is a supportive “yes dear” husband. Quite deceiving, huh.

Stories about Diana, Cherry and Ry have truly heightened the feeling of entrapment and helplessness. Diana’s husband is a closeted asshole. Being married to him for 36 years is excruciating. Cherry’s husband has truly perfected his “good guy” image and uses her language barrier to his advantage. There’s a heartbreaking scene where Cherry’s daughter doing the translation for her mom but she keeps some criticisms to herself. Good girl. Ry’s story is less compelling, she moves from one abuser to another despite seeing all the classic signs.

Most abusers are good at hiding in plain sight with their convincing personas, perfected over times.

“Sometimes the big, bad monster comes in the shape of the love of your life. Butterflies in your stomach aren’t chemistry. They’re your intuition, telling you to run.”

“The system is not broken. The system is working exactly as it was designed to. That’s the problem.”
