I think I'll stick with the country music documentary Ken Burns did for PBS a few years ago. I don't have Hulu, but a friend does, so I'll peruse the thread once it airs and if it's better than I'm expecting watch it next time I'm at her house. 3 Link to comment
Bastet November 18 Share November 18 This has finally been released, and I have about a week left on my Hulu subscription, so I tried. Admittedly not very long, but I'm going to take a hard pass. Those who read the Country Music thread in Music will remember the great discussion about five years ago when Sirius released a list of the Top 1000 songs in the history of country music that was so thoroughly ridiculous the folks at Country Universe did an entire series ranking Sirius's rankings -- it stuck to too high, about right, too low, and so wrong, but included brilliant WTactualF commentary. The list seemed composed by a group of frat boy interns, who populated it with their beloved dudebro artists, and then to give a veneer of legitimacy looked up "old country songs" - but, in their ignorance, picked songs at random - and "Do chicks sing country?" to toss a few bones to female artists. It was an abomination unto the genre. This documentary is executive produced by Peyton Manning's sexual assaulting and defaming assface and bro-country hero Luke Bryan, so I'm coming in thinking this is not for me. But, hey, let's try. Except, in the intro, they're talking to folks from Sirius, giving me flashbacks. Oh, lordy. But, still, let's try. Not even 60 seconds in, Peyton says country music is unifying, it doesn't matter who you are or where you're from. My dude, please. Ken Burns turned a disturbingly blind eye to the bigotry in country music in his documentary, but he didn't outright lie like this. Peyton, tell it to Ray Charles, k.d. lang, Beyoncé, Lil Nas X, all the women begging for airplay, etc. and get back to me. So, okay, I'll turn this first episode off - especially since it's about Luke Combs - and just skip to Wynonna's episode and then watch Mickey Guyton's (I'm not familiar with her, but I'd love to hear from a Black woman in this genre) and Sheryl Crow's (love her). Except just a few minutes into Wynonna's episode Bryan has that many times revealed he has no idea what the word "infamous" means. And he's trying to claim women in country are finally getting their due. Fool, please. I don't think I can continue, but if anyone has powered through and has select moments to recommend, let me know. Link to comment
