Stars Gerard Butler and Mike Coulter.  Very serviceable action thriller that is under 2 hours.

Butler is the pilot of a plane traveling from Singapore to Tokyo on New Years Eve and after being hit by lightning in a storm, crash lands on an island somewhere near the Philippines that is controlled by rebels.

Good snark against airlines by the crisis-management person.  good action by the stars.  don't go looking for backstory here, only the minimum is provided (which is why its under 2 hours).

now streaming on STARZ.

I enjoyed it and there were good action sequences. I heard they were going to make a sequel starring Mike Coulter's character; maybe then we''ll get backstory about his crime. They're going to call it Ship. :)

I finally caught this with some free credits. It was certainly better than the monthly NetFlix action movie release.

I think in the promotion of the movie they missed it making us think Gerald Butler was going to be a version of his Has Fallen series Secret Service Agent Banning instead of a more normal man willing to fight. And the same with Mike Coulter's veteran legionnaire being able to ambush but not being full out Rambo Wick.

I would just hope it doesn't end up being a pardon for yet another mission. Trying to clean up a murder charge from 20 years ago seems less action and more of a dramatic genre.

Here's an update about the sequel, no longer called Ship. They got an interim agreement to work during the strike, but now the strike is over, so they can probably get a lot more done now.

It does seem like they would be pushing Legionnaire Gaspare towards the Rambo Wick, or at least Steven Segal's Chief Rybeck from Under Siege. I guess that I just prefer the story of the just above ordinary guy from Die Hard to the stories about  the guy you send to kill the boogeyman.

I can see once you get passed "Boat" to get to a more secure island free from kidnapper gangs something pushes Gaspare to move out of his illegal alien status. And having served his time in service  as a last resort not a goal in life he doesn't want to be a replacement troop for Shellback.
