Dead Ringers in the Media

The 1988 movie followed gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle (Jeremy Irons), identical twins who operate a successful fertility clinic. Elliot charms the women who come to the clinic, while Beverly often substitutes in for his more confident brother. When Beverly falls for Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold) and gets addicted to prescription drugs, the true horror begins. The movie was loosely based on the lives of twin gynecologists Stewart and Cyril Marcus, blended with the 1971 novel, Twins, by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland.

Rachel Weisz plays twin gynecologists, the Mantle twins. The pair share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes (including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics) in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women's healthcare to the forefront. They are on a mission to change the way women give birth by hoping to open their own birthing center and an embryology lab. They want "total control" over the way the reproductive process is perceived and handled — which they believe could change the world.

This is a thrilling tale about ambition, self-interest, and the manipulation of power as co-dependent twin doctors, at the top of their professions, start to unravel under the weight of their obsession with each other and their career pursuits.

To make this unique story, they used a women-only writing team, spoke with a number of twins and medical professionals and watched two births. To make the Mantle twins as distinct as possible from each other, each sister had their own film crew that would be switched as the characters switched.

Rachel Weisz as the brazen, cynical, earthy, extroverted, animalistic, messy, wild, spontaneous, funny, hungry and energetic Elliot Mantle as well as the serious, sensitive, reserved and inward focused Beverly Mantle, twin gynecologists.

Really looking forward to this - Weisz is an exceptional talent. I'm way behind on things, so I may be late to comment.

Big fan of the movie.  Irons got robbed of an Oscar for it (he wasn't even nominated despite winning numerous critical awards), so they gave him a mea culpa Oscar for Reversal of Fortune. He even thanked Cronenberg in his acceptance speech.
