Season One: All Episodes Discussion

I binged this season in 2 days and wanted a place to talk about the whole thing, since it's hard for me to remember which thing happened in which episode.

I didn't want to or expect to like this show as much as I did. I am frustrated that we're still getting mostly coming out stories, as though LGBTQ people have nothing else to tell stories about. That said, I did like it a lot. So, good job at making me like a show on a topic I'm bored by!

One thing I love is that when the dad's bad behavior was revealed, no one made any excuses whatsoever for it. Other shows make it seem like assaulting someone is understandable and even manly, but this show treated it like a shocking and unacceptable, inexcusable transgression.

I am hoping that there will be a season 2, where there will be more exploration of Benjy's experience, and maybe they will talk about why he was with Derek when the two were obviously a  bad match. I think it can be really hard to find partners when there are too few people around to choose from, so maybe they got together because there wasn't anyone else gay in Benji's life. But then it turns out Derek is not from the high school... so how did they meet?

Atlanta is a big enough city to have LGBTQ organizations, isn't it? It's hard for me to believe there isn't a youth group or community center or SOMETHING of the sort. You shouldn't have to go all the way to NYC to find a bar or a club, either.

Andrew not realizing he's obnoxious and then trying to be better as soon as he was called on it, surprised me. I have yet to meet a person in real life who takes that feedback. But it was pleasant enough to see him be acting decent in the end. Him not wanting to be a rebound for Mia was unexpected and I liked it.
