For months now I've been anticipating The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, and Call Me By Your Name, but none of them have made it to my smallish city.  By next weekend I should have seen them all on the big screen, though. My husband and I always take a little anniversary trip during which we mainly eat good food and watch good movies in nice theaters.  Because of the timing of our anniversary, we can always be sure that a bunch of Oscar-nominated films will be showing in the larger city that we always visit.

Can I just say how much I love your tradition?  What a cool way to celebrate!

  2. I know it was a 'joke' but the Mitch/Jay exchange really bothered me - maybe it wouldn't have bothered me as much a few weeks ago...?

Mitch - (not exact quote) - I wish a woman walked by right now so I could objectify her

Jay - isn't it the best? (or something similar)

Didn't sit right with me - but maybe (hopefully) I'm misremembering it.

And I didn't find one thing funny in this episode.  It all seemed so forced.

  3. I want that garden thing (can't remember what it was called, I guess I need to find that out!) and yes, it was very obvious he wanted to work with Mark. His face just dropped when Mark dropped out.

I'm still in shock that those stupid dude wipes are selling $3 mil a year.

I'm with you KaveDweller - Kevin has been so mean, unnecessarily so quite often, in my opinion, that when he shows emotion, I don't really care.

What I missed: Did Hali know about the idol?

Yes.  She was there when Tai told the tribe about it.

Hali was not there when Tai told them about the idol.  Brad even said something like 'if one of us 4 gets votes, we need to use the idol'.  I don't think he would have said that if Hali was sitting with them.

  5. I checked the mosquito thing on Amazon.  Three reviews, all 5 stars, all saying 'can't wait to buy this', meaning they are giving 5 stars to something they have not used or even seen.  When I see stuff like that, I always think those reviews are from people connected to the company and then makes me think less of the company.

  6. I wonder if that vacuum thing is real.  He also kept saying 'my customers' but never said (that I remember) what he actually does.  If it works, Jim will be even richer.  If not, he lost some pocket change.

I plan on checking out the bug zapper on Amazon.  If it really works, wow.  I will buy one immediately.  But weird that the inventor apparently didn't care to come on the show.

  7.  I am buying one of those tattoos.  And I don't get the $15 bath bomb, but, man, has she found herself a good space. Over a million dollars in sales in less than 6 months.

The shower cap lady was just sad.  She's a professional speaker?  I don't see her getting a lot of speaking gigs after that performance.  But I did learn that Kim K won't' wear something unless you pay her.  Crazy world we live in.

  8. On Dragon's Den (Canadian version), they'll do updates on people who didn't get a deal but are doing great, people who didn't get a deal and are still struggling, people who got a deal but it fell through (for whatever reason) and I feel that makes the show about the business world and how businesses can succeed and fail.  When Shark Tank only updates on people who are thrilled, I feel it's nothing but a promotional machine.

  9. I also want to buy the beeswax thing.  That sounds fantastic.  Will have to see if it sells in the US.

I've seen the rage room before - I almost think it was on Shark Tank a few years ago (but I could be wrong), but I do know I've seen it before.  I understand it might be fun, but it bothers me all those things being destroyed for no good thing.  I also wanted to know more about what else that company does.  I don't remember getting much info on the rest of their business.

And the less said about the canned air, the better.  I cannot believe people are actually paying for that.

Wow. Now Variety has pictures from backstage of the minutes leading up to the mixup, with Cullinan tweeting away (and with two envelopes in his possession).

From above link: "He feels very, very terrible and horrible. He is very upset about this mistake,” PWC chairman Tim Ryan told Variety on Monday. “While I am concerned I hope we will be judged on how quickly we reacted and owned up to the issue.”

Which is my problem with this.  They did not react quickly.  It took them three minutes, when it should have taken 30 second at the most for one of the PWC people to rush on stage and stop everything.  It seems that if one of them had actually been paying attention to what was happening on stage (or just listening), as soon as LLL was announced, both of them should have known that was wrong (since they apparently memorize the winners).  So, no, you didn't react quickly.  Also, I can kind of see this happening in the middle of the show, when a lot of envelopes are still in play.  But it's the last award of the night.  You better be handing out the last envelope in your hand to the presenter.  You have to really not be paying attention to not notice that you still have an envelope left. (I know, he had two in his hand, but again, it's on him for not putting aside the Best Actress envelope once Emma came back stage.  Once she was handed the award, all envelopes, other than Best Picture, should have been put aside.  If that's not something they routinely do, then I have to question their process and am amazed it hadn't happen before).

  11. Kimmel's part in this bothered me.  I agree Horowitz took charge when the people whose job it was did not, but being told it was nice of him to agree to transfer the award to the correct recipient sounds like he was doing the Moonlight people a favor.  Again, that's all on Kimmel.  Horowitz was the only one up there doing what needed to be done.  The producers and accountants dropped the ball.

    Quote from Washington Post:

    ----

    Kimmel then turned to Horowitz.

“I would like to see you get an Oscar, anyway,” he said. “Why can’t we just give out a whole bunch of them?”

But Horowitz quickly demurred: “I’m going to be really proud to hand this to my friends from ‘Moonlight.’”

“That’s nice of you,” Kimmel said.

    ---

And again, I don't understand why the two people who should have known immediately that the wrong card had been read, did not run out on stage and stop things before the LLL people even got out of their seats.  That's completely on them.  Maybe they felt they didn't have the right to do that, but you're responsible for this.  You need to act to correct it as soon as possible, not wait around and play telephone backstage.

  12. If the accountants actually memorize the winners, then as soon as LLL was announced, someone should have been screaming.  Not wait for that group to actually come up on stage and start their speeches.  Big fail for the accountants and the stage manager.  Seriously, color code those envelopes.  Better to be right than to look good.  That way, if Warren is holding a red envelope and Best Picture is in yellow, that would be noticed right away by someone whose job is to pay attention to that.

  13. My issue with my MRI was not the confined space, but the jackhammering in my head.  Has no one been bothered by that?  Or did I have some crazy MRI ,where for over an hour, I was surrounded by the sounds of jack hammers.  Thought I would lose my mind!  One of the worst experiences of my life.

When Howard walked into the kitchen, Bernadette said she was making lasagna, but she was chopping red bell peppers. Red bell peppers in lasagna? I've have several lasagna recipes, my family is Italian, and I have never heard of using red bell peppers in lasagna.

OMG - that drove me crazy.  Peppers in lasagna.  They could have said some other dish where it would have made sense for her to be chopping peppers.  But not lasagna.  Apparently no one associated with the show cooks.

To me, this is like Christie's meatloaf story. I'm sure the meatloaf is great and maybe I even would have ordered it myself, but I would hate it if someone ordered it for me without even the appearance of checking with me. That's emasculating.

I'm baffled by this - and curious.  Who's Christie and what meatloaf?  I need to know!

I just had to check and the Gucci Baby Cape is a real thing.  Sells on Gucci's website for $350.  So nice of Raj to save his dad money by buying it on sale.

Seriously?  WTF is wrong with people?  What baby needs a $300 cape?

(btw - my first double quote- and I made it work.  Yeah me!)

  16. I thought Green Mustache was a stupid name but the dragons liked it, so what do I know?  They were an adorable family, though.

The mobile dog grooming was a single person operation but I feel she brought her brother, just so she would fit in with the theme.  And I love how 'yes, we've only made $22k, but our company is totally worth $600k'.

I did not get the gaming outfit at all.  Lucky for them, I'm not their target audience.

  17. I'm surprised that it took Lori to bring up the idea of fire fighter charities.  That seemed so obvious.  But my issues with those bags, after the price because I would never pay that much, is how heavy they would be.  Those outfits are heavy and I, for one, don't want to be carrying around a bag that weighs 10lbs before I put anything in it.  And really the only plus for those bags is that they were from outfits that had been worn in fires.  once you start making them from brand new fabric, then they have nothing going for them.

And how come no friend of that ointment guy told him to change his fucking clothes?  Those shorts were an embarrassment on so many levels.

Catching up on some old episodes and the rock lady passing  was pretty bad.

I also didn't get what was special about the snow clearing guys. Their machine with the snow blower behind the truck looks exactly like the same ones every company in Ottawa uses and had used for years. Is that not how plow companies in the rest of Canada work, or is it the Mr. Plow type truck?

The way I understood it, the way his truck operated, it cut down the time to clear a driveway, for example, by more than half.  So whatever his truck does, it does it faster.  I didn't understand the mechanics of it, but I did get the less time point.
