I think Mariner really is similar to Tom Paris, except exaggerated for comic effect, and of course, it's harder to be insubordinate in Tom's situation where a) you have a pretty good boss in Janeway 99 percent of the time b) you're more in a life-and-death set of situations that don't give you as many options to rebel as Mariner has c) the parental figure against whom the rebellion is taking place isn't right there, unlike Mariner's situation.

Also, as this episode notes, Janeway will straight-up murder people.

Starfleet tolerates a lot, but it was easy to hate Mariner because she was a too cool for school type who got away with shenanigans that would have gotten anyone else canned because hey, nepotism!  The other nepo kids aren't exactly popular with the fandom either.

Plus Starfleet isn't exactly a mystery.  They ARE a military organization that enforces a hierarchy and rules, especially after the trauma of the Dominion War, Borg, etc.  Anyone who can't tolerate that shouldn't join, then bitch about it afterwards.  There are plenty of non-Starfleet ways to get into space.

Yeah, but there's the flip side of nepotism in terms of family expectations.  Mariner's mother is a Starfleet captain.  Her father is a Starfleet admiral.  Think about what little kid Mariner's life must have been like.  Figure Starfleet was shoved down her throat and in her ears at all times.  She probably got a parental career plan to take her from Cadet to Admiral at age eight.  I don't think Mariner was ever really rebelling against Starfleet so much as against others' attempts to carve her into a Starfleet shaped peg to fit into their Starfleet shaped hole.

I would have expected a cameo from at least a Voyager actor -- Jeri Ryan and Tim Russ were both in the final season of Picard, and I feel like they could relatively easily get Picardo, or Dawson to do a quick line or two.

I feel like there is a conscious decision to soften Mariner up. A group of fans have been put off by how disrespectful and anti-Starfleet she was originally, and how she was condescending toward Boimler in particular. The amount of whining she did left for some people an open question as to: well if you hate Starfleet so much, why not GTFO?

The answer is that despite her mommy issues, her issues with authority/bureaucracy, her PTSD, self-sabotaging behavior and/or other mental health issues, she actually likes Starfleet. I don't know if the reveal of this will seem too lightswitchy or will get people who dislike the character to warm to her, but oh well.

None of that seems out of character.  Even back in the first parts of the first season when Mariner was her most... Mariner, she liked going new places, learning new things and meeting/helping new people.  She's just not a fan of Starfleet's occasionally rigid proceduralism - especially things like "Your people are dying of a plague that we could easily cure, but we won't because the Prime Directive says "Fuck you.""

I don’t typically follow all these different worlds, but I joined DH for this episode, and my first question was why no one was talking about Luke!!  Glad to know I’m not alone.

Whenever Luke, Han or Leia aren't onscreen, someone should be demanding to know where they are.

Those who have watched Rebels: Where is Ezra Bridger?

Those who have not watched Rebels: I'll do you one better: Who is Ezra Bridger?

Drax: I'll do YOU one better: Why is Ezra Bridger?

    Questions in order:

We don't know where Ezra is but the other characters hope that finding Thrawn will lead them to him.

Ezra was a teen and eventual apprentice Jedi of Kanan, the father of Hera's kid and another member of the core Rebels group.

Well, when a mommy Bridger and a daddy Bridger love each other very, very much...

I'm not sure if it was intentional or not but I loved how Ortegas and Chapel snuggled up to him in the lounge. Lower Decks has established that Boimler does have a certain charm with the ladies but he's totally oblivious to it and/or finds it annoying.

Great payoff for Una's plot from earlier in the season. Having said that, while she is the poster child for Starfleet, I don't think her genetic status ever gets revealed or else Dr. Bashir wouldn't have had to struggle with the same issue so many years later.

Does the end scene mean that the LD crew is gallivanting around the galaxy drunk on Orion booze all the time?

They were "snuggling up" to Boimler to mess with him.

With Una she's still a special case.  Also, Bashir is who the rule is really for - somebody whose parents decided to use genetic manipulation to try to turn their baby into a superman.

The entire LD universe being high on Orion booze would honestly explain a lot of things.

  7. I want Tendi to show up in a "sequel" to this or something.  With this one the focus was "We've got to get these annoying future people out of here before they wreck time!"

With Tendi it would be "Awww, Captain, can't we keep her?  She's so adorable and nice.  Plus she kicked the shit out of two adult Gorn in hand to hand."

I still think that Starfleet were unduly harsh in accusing the kids of stealing the ship.

Technically they found it, used it to escape a dangerous situation, and were trying to return it to its owner.

Am looking forward to seeing where they go next season.

And all that stuff needed to be formally established on the record.

I mean look at it from Star Fleet's perspective.

The Protstar, a top-secret prototype, went missing for years, it's crew vanished.

It returns with a crew of unknown aliens (who are teens/children, but still) and causes the destruction of a Federation outpost.

It's new crew repeatedly refuses all attempts at communication and eventually a weapon aboard it causes the destruction of quite a lot of vessels on a scale not seen since the Dominion War.  As well as probably quite a lot of deaths of Star Fleet personal.

It's completely understandable that Star Fleet wants both answers and someone to be held accountable.

Fortunately for the kids, Janeway was in their corner as a respected vice-Admiral and Star Fleet is generally a decent, fair-minded organization, so the kids are on record as being cleared and now they get to start their new Federation/Star Fleet futures.

That was really good (apart from the Soong bit - I'd like to have one ST show without any Soong-mention). I'm happy Rok is finally the science officer without doing double duty as security officer. Murf sure was an effective little fighting machine. Of course Dal went for the implant, but I liked how his motivation was not just based on juvenile curiosity but also insecurity (caused by Okona's flirting with all female crew members and by finding out about his lab-provenance/parentless state). I wonder if some remnants of his enhanced skills remain active.

Speaking of Okona: he was one of my favorite TNG characters and I'm glad we've met him again. I appreciated the joke about Janeway's hair-do.

As for the cliffhanger: I wondered what was up with Ensign Asencia throughout the whole episode. Nice reveal, looks like she used an implant similar to the one Dal had, so that technology hangs around. I don't think she's a future version of Gwen but maybe that's just because I don't want to make the mental effort of dissecting the various time-travel shenanigans that would entail.

The Diviner created/grew Gwen after he came from the future.  Ascencia specifically stated that she had been sent back.  She's not "Future Gwen."

How did a Soong augment end up in the Delta quadrant ?

Dal is still insufferable even while mutated.

Ensign Asencia is also from the future.  Sure, why not ?  When did she arrive from the future ?
How many other people were sent back from the future to destroy Starfleet ?  If there are even more, when did they arrive ?
They have a time machine -- why don't they try where the Borg failed and go back in time to kill Zefram Cochrane ?

Presumably we'll find out some of that in future episode.  For the last question, so the show can happen.

Murf sitting on the console and firing a torpedo was kind of silly but we might be able to allow it if the computer doesn't realize that Murf has appendages and considers him to be one big appendage.

Honestly?  I liked the episode a lot because whatever else, the show didn't give them a magical solution that everything was better.  They fucked up, Janeway made sure they knew they'd fucked up, and they have to live with that knowledge.

Rok-Tahk, who always tugs at my heartstrings, trying so hard to apologize broke me a little.

I don't have as much of a problem with Nandi being in the Delta Quadrant, because it's clear the Protostar jumped a long way when they engaged their drive, and by most official maps, the Klingon Empire extends from the Alpha Quadrant al the way across the Beta almost to the border, and Romulan space goes all the way to it.  I can buy a familiar species being out that far.

I have more of a problem with a female DaiMon, because while I can absolutely believe that Grand Nagus Rom would have allowed women to serve, according to the timeline, he'd been in office less than 10 years at this point, and Dal's supposed to be in his teens.  I can't make that math work in my head.

Not every Ferengi female is going to be okay with their misogynistic agenda.  Nandi went out to make some profit on her own and to hell with what the males think.

Ooh you just know if that happens it will be the reason they mothball that class of ship and make it Starfleet Regs  that all ships are to be manned.

I think Mariner will get tired of the roving rogue life. For all her complaints about Starfleet she grew up in that environment and joined it. It’s in her blood.

Im wondering if Carol might be demoted for this? As for what happened, I still blame the journalist. Seems she was more for gossip and sensationalism. She should have double checked her stories before going to air.

I doubt that Freeman will be demoted.  If nothing else, Dawnn Lewis is a main cast member and nobody wants to go through the silliness that ensued in the later Original Series movies where most of the cast was on the Enterprise except for Sulu who was off by himself on the Excelsior.

The journalist's stories were basically true.  She was going on the information she was freely given by all those "Chatty Cathy" crew-people.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Mariner is where she belongs, even if unfairly. Never liked the character, never felt she belonged on the ship.

For some odd reason, I want another cameo by Memaw (?). That little scene just tickled me and the fact that Carol knew who she was.

I'd have agreed with you about Season One Mariner, but that's not who she is anymore.  That said I think she's good for the show and the ship.  Beckett doesn't blindly believe/spout Federation doctrine.  That's important to showcase the Federation when she's right, but also when she's wrong, like in "Grounded."

we didn’t have to see Madisynn, we could’ve just heard a “Wongers!” As Emil stepped through

That's a casualty of the Marvel Production System.  With other shows you'd have the Fall season with some more filming during the winter or whatever so that if there was an unexpectedly popular breakout character, the showrunners could take that into account and do more with that person.

But She-Hulk has likely been "in the can" for at least six months to a year.  We might get more Madisynn in an eventual Season Two.

  16. I liked what this episode represented - that the show is willing to experiment, break the format and try new stuff.  I'd have preferred checking in with the Cerritos crew a little earlier, but screw it.  Setting up Peanut Hamper in a "Dances with Avatar" story and then revealing that no, she's still the same selfish, vapid person she's always been was hilarious.

The episode was really inventive and everything but I had pretty much forgotten about Peanut Hamper and to focus an entire episode on the possible but not quite redemption of an unlikeable character didn’t really work for me.   I didn’t really like the episode until the Cerrrios showed up.  The episode was t bad.  It had its moments but I doubt it will go into my top ten episodes list.

I am curious if Peanut Hamper and the other robot in robot prison will form an evil duo.   That will retroactively change my opinion if this episode.

    Badgey for a triple threat.

I guessed that this would finally be the introduction of Daredevil, but as soon as I heard the sound of a cane, I admit my heart started beating so much that I bet Matt would have heard me a mile away. I have been so excited for Matt to finally show up, and this was all that I wanted and more. Matt seems quite a bit lighter than usual, a bit more happy and down for fun banter, but he still very much seems like the same guy from his own show. I hope this means that Matt has had a few decent years in between here and when his show ended, God knows the poor guy needs a few wins. I guess the LA sun is good for his mood, maybe its time to taker the occasional vacation from Hells Kitchen. Great to see him nailing it as a lawyer and as a superhero, we even got to see a classic Daredevil hallway fight, those henchgoons were probably lucky that Jenn showed up to She-Hulk smash them, we know how brutal fights with Matt can get. Jenn and Matt? Oh yeah, I am so into this, Jenn really needs that romantic win, especially after how the episode ended. She and Matt are super cute together and they actually made a good team on Jenn's first superhero mission. Hopefully this isn't the end for him, they both really need a nice person to go out with without too much baggage.

Loved that happy grin as Matt walked away in the morning, no shame in his game!

Leap Frog is a real deep cut, he was a fun stupid minor villain. Loved Jenn and Matt giving him legal advice while they beat up his henchgoons and his hilarious stupid villain lair. The Lilly Pad? Very subtle.

I knew something bad was going to happen as soon as Jenn reminded us that this was the episode before the season finale and that this episode seems to be building up to a twist, but instead of a red Hulk or a major character death, we get the Intelligencia trolls being the absolute fucking worst. Did I hear them say that Jenn "stole" the Hulks powers? Seriously? What a pack of assholes, they are just so disgusted by the very idea of a woman living her best life and daring to have consensual sex that they would do all of this to her? This is going to be rough going forward, but I hope that Jenn goes all She-Hulk smash on every single one of those assholes, especially Josh, the biggest monster in the entire MCU. These pathetic trolls deserve to be called out as the scum they are and to get the biggest comeuppance they can.

Oh good, its Damage Control, here to do what they do best: make everything worse. Did Intelligencia give them a heads up that something was going down, or do they just show up and lurk around every time a known super person is going to be around? Either one sounds right, I guess they needed to find something to do after they got in trouble for attacking unarmed teenagers with drones in New Jersey.

To be fair being there whenever a super-powered person is supposed to be around is probably a good way to get ahead and "control" the likely damage.

And for my part, I don't want her to go She-Hulk smash on Intelligencia.  I want her to go Jennifer Walters smash.

Jennifer is a former ADA.  So I want her to use her training and skill to unmask those fuckers and destroy them, starting with Josh.

Because she knows who he is.  "Josh, it's simple.  You can give up your fellow cretins or you can go to prison.  Real prison.  Where you will wish that you could be celibate."

I might be indulging in wishful thinking but I think Holloway will support her.  She-Hulk is the face of his new law division and these assholes just slapped that face and devalued it.  For that they need to pay in money and tears of regret.

Oh. Hello GamerGate bullshit. I didn't misss you at all. Not that you ever left. Jesus, the end of this episode was harrowing and rage inducing and, yes, that fucking Hulk_king icon is clearly a nod to the equally repellent Pepe the Frog nonsense.

But on the upside, I loved everything else about the episode. I loved the 'Who's this asshole?' that led to Jen being both impressed/charmed by Matt then their face off and the inevitable team up. IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE AMIRITE?!

And Matt's Walk of Awesome at the end. LOVE.

Mallory knowing what was about to happen with Jen's rage and warning her not to... mixed feelings. Good lawyerly advice? Yes? Reasonable after that kind of gross violation? No. And I kind of want Holloway to get slapped down. He wanted the face (and also because she was a good lawyer) but then made her beholden to complete assholes and creeps and didn't really care about Jen as anything other than a commodity. Yeah, he should be scared. And I hope Mallory steps up in a big way to represent Jen.

And I hope those assholes get what's coming to them.

I hope it turns out Holloway and the firm has Jen's back on this.

The show really came together this week and had some focus that actually seemed to move the story along.

Are we going to find out that creepy Wakanda-loving dude is the mastermind (?) behind all this? Seems like they’re putting him in that space.

I'm not sure how much "resolution to the plot" there's  actually going to be next week because of the nature of said plot.  This show isn't about alien sky laser or gun-toting conspiracies.  It's about a woman who happens to have superpowers living her life in LA.  The blood-thief people can wait until next season (or maybe the...

    Spoiler

Captain America movie since I've heard that The Leader might be in it),

There will probably be some resolution/comeuppance for Josh, shit-bag that he was.

If Gil-galad believes that then he's the new dumbest person on the show. Perhaps the dumbest person in Middle-earth.  Sauron was the right-hand-man (well, Maiar) of the supreme force of evil in the universe.  And all the elves know that and many of them actually lived it. Sauron isn't going to hide in a corner somewhere playing nice just because Galadriel stops looking for him.  His independent goal is to impose (his view of) order on Middle-earth, with him as the controller at the top.

I didn't read it as that.  Gil-Galad wants Galadrial to go West in part because he doesn't want her fanatic obsession with hunting Sauron to infect other Elves.  It's the fanatic obsession that concerns him because he remember Feanor's obsession with reclaiming the Silmarils, which led to the Kinslaying and a bunch of other horrid stuff.

The Durin/Elrond/Disa scenes are a delight. And the big ending with the Numenorians deciding to join the elves in battle gave me chills.

Really enjoying this show so far.

Well, technically the Numenoreans are joining one elf in battle and that elf is one that the other elves think is kind of an obsessive nutbar.
