I just want to pipe up here that this isn't prostitution. Nobody is getting paid. There is no exchange. This is sexual slavory. The women are prisoners, forces to live in communal harem. It's like when soldiers round up all the women from a destroyed village so they can go in and rape them whenever they are bored. There is no transaction. That's what makes it utterly revolting and hypocritical. Gilead is selling this sanctimonious lie that the handmaidens are revered and valuable for their fertility, but that thin scab is easily torn off to reveal that women's sexuality is the actual commodity they want to control.
