  1. I think my favorite part about Christmas on Cherry Lane  was that they felt the need to give al the characters nicknames, so they wouldn't give away the ending. I'm watching 34213 holiday movies a season, I can't recall the names of the lead characters in the films I actually liked. I've watched The Nine Lives of Christmas a dozen times, and only know the character's names by the actors who play them (the character's name ends in a "lee" sound, I remember without Googling.)

The movie would have been easier to watch if they sprinkled bread crumbs throughout. The only time I was engaged was when I saw the dead dad's car all fixed up, and instantly realized the cop was Conrad's dad (speaking of. Can we talk about the family photo, where they used Microsoft Paint to merge younger photos of all the actors. It was exceptionally bad.)

Except that she described Palm Springs as a Tom Cruise movie - it's Andy Samberg -  and again I wonder why they don't have someone, anyone, who picks up on these things.

I missed the Palm Springs reference. When she said Tom Cruise, I figured she was talking about Edge of Tomorrow. I'll have to watch the movie again, because the pacing was so quick. At one point she mentioned it was the third time she was reliving the day, when I thought it was only the second.

  3. Round and Round was a winner for me. I’ve loved Bryan Greenberg since One Tree Hill, so I was glad to see him in this. He was such a charismatic and fun love interest. So much chemistry! My favorite moment was when she kissed him in the van and he asked if that was the first time.

This one joins the top of my 2023 list along with Catch Me if You Claus

Fresh cranberry sauce consists of 3 ingredients - cranberries, sugar, and a liquid. I can't imagine a chef even wanting to buy it.

I think the main issue was that his original dinner was ruined, and he had to remake it in a time crunch, in an unfinished kitchen. So he was probably limited on pots and burners. They should have just made the issue that the store was out of cranberries, since the movie already required way too much thinking. This movie definitely felt like Hallmark’s attempt at This Is Us, down to the anvil-rific reveal in the last 90 seconds.

I go two directions on this. She wasn't exactly the greatest thing about the prequels. What would her role be? More Mon Mothma on the political side, or more Leia on the action side? Since Mon Mothma was in a ROTS deleted political scene, I suppose Padme would hold down the Leia role because OG Leia would be too young at this point.

They could potentially use her in Andor if they give Mon Mothma flashbacks next season to cover the arc from the ROTS deleted scenes. Or Padme could pop up in Ahsoka if they do anymore Clone War era flashbacks.

  6. Bummer for Isabeau, she was positioned much better last year when the rest of the ladies flubbed their Free Skate, and she snuck onto the podium.

  7. I struggled with the book. A lot. So in comparison, I actually thought the film was well done. It trimmed a lot of the fat that made the book hard to read for me. I still had a hard time connecting with the characters, and while Sejanus was less annoying than he was in the books, he was less annoying.

The highlight, without a doubt, was Jason Schwartzman as Lucky Flickerman. I didn't think anyone could come close to Stanley Tucci's perfection as Caesar, but Jason Schwartzman pulled it off.

I saw that preview for "Round and Round" -- a time-travelling Hanukkah tale, oh how wonderful.  LOL.

I do not have high hopes considering what I remember about "Hanukkah on Rye" where some deli relatives suddenly burst out singing the dreidel song on a sidewalk in the middle of the night.

Hallmark has made a few decent Hanukkah movies between Double Holiday and Eight Gifts of Hanukkah. I'm looking forward to Round and Round because it has Bryan Greenberg in it.

There was a movie a couple years ago that had the same twist. A woman worked at a museum made of some historical guys house, and the guy had disappeared at some point and no one knew why. Turns out he was transported to present time and never went back cause of the woman he met.

    Biltmore Christmas was better though.

I think the other movie was A Timeless Christmas with Ryan Paevey and Erin Cahill.

Another good time travel one is The Spirit of Christmas.

Yes! It’s up there with the hot springs (or was it hot tub) scene in Crashing Through the Snow. Another win for Hallmark.

That's the other movie I was thinking about!

Back to Catch Me if You Claus, I laughed out loud at Luke MacFarlane's delivery of, "I'll be so ffffff-ar behind schedule!" It was so campy and fun!

Their kissing scenes were hawt - especially the first one in the car

The car scene may have been the sexiest scene I’ve seen in a Hallmark movie! Catch Me if You Clause was a definite highlight for the season. The two leads had fantastic chemistry, straight out of a screwball romantic comedy. When Hallmark gets the pairings right, they really knock it out of the park.

Given how well she did here, I’m wondering why USFS didn’t select her for another GP. She seems more than ready for it.

She came in 9th at US Nationals last year, and doesn't have much international experience, so it isn't shocking. Hopefully she stays consistent enough through the rest of the season to send her to Four Continents if she doesn't qualify for one of the World's slots.

  13. Finally got to watch Holiday Road last night, and I really liked it. It's based on a true story of a road trip going viral, so the social media aspect was pivotal to the story (kind of like in #XMAS last year.) I thought all of the characters had great chemistry. Although, I've definitely seen the coffee spiel done way too many times before with the over complicated drink order.

  14. Apparently they scraped the Six of Crows spinoff too. I hope they reconsider and at least do a movie. I think the cast and characters are strong enough they they could do a standalone film that doesn't require watching Shadow and Bone. Granted, a lot of the book has already been adapted, but the beauty of heists, as seen is Netflix's other show, Kaleidoscope, is that the order of events don't matter much, when done right.

They also did that thing where the Germans spoke English even when they were alone but I don't look to Hallmark for realism so I was fine with that.

My favorite was their heart to heart at the end of the movie where he spoke in German while she spoke in English. Like this is where you break out the subtitles?

  16. I thought Christmas Island has been the most consistent and formulaic movie so far this year. It was fine, and had a decent story arc, but still, kind of dull.

I only watched the last 20 minutes of A Heidelberg Christmas. I've actually spent time in that area, so I wanted to be excited for it, but it seemed really melodramatic.

Navigating Christmas looks like it might be fun *fingers crossed.* I'm still waiting for one decent movie this year that's rewatchable. So far The Santa Summit is the only one that's come close to making the cut.

Thanks, absnow54.  So if I'm interpreting correctly, you simutaneously view the Hallmark movies as viable escapist romantic entertainment which might touch some emotive part of the heart and soul yet still be made fun of?

Yes, when so many showrunners are priding themselves for plot twists that are subversive and unexpected, I enjoy the predictability of Hallmark Christmas movies. Completely low stakes, albeit contrived cotton candy for the brain. (And yes, snarking on them is a lot of fun too, because nobody on this planet has that many winter coats.)
