  1. I was confused by the Paris episode.  The son lives in San Francisco but the map with the arrow showed it going from Irvine to Paris.  So his mother was living in Irvine?  What was she living in there?

Also, I just now watched the horses in Spain episode, and I was SO distracted by the realtor's beard thing.  Okay, so I'm an oldster, and not part of the porn generation, and my exposure to women's naked bodies is limited to the post-water aerobics women at the Y.  So I'm very much not up to date on current pubic hair styles, but I've heard of some and use my imagination, and that's exactly what the lower part of this guy's chin hair looks like.

And if you add in the upper part, it looked like a uterus.

I also think maybe Coppola wanted to not present anything that would make Priscilla less angelic (i.e. extramarital affairs, etc).

I didn't read the book, so I'm not sure what the facts are.  But it seemed to me that the audience was being allowed to infer that Priscilla had something going on with the karate teacher, from the way she interacted with him in the scene with him and some of her friends.

It was more of a series of vignettes with plot points that went nowhere,

Good description.  A very stylish series of vignettes, though.

  3. Variety got its hands on some emails that Lisa Marie sent to Sofia Coppola a few weeks before production started.  Lisa Marie read an early version of the script and was not pleased.

“I will be forced to be in a position where I will have to openly say how I feel about the film and go against you, my mother and this film publicly,” Presley wrote.

Pretty juicy article, and I'm assuming accurate, since Coppola was asked for comment and her representative quoted from Coppola's reply to the emails.

Charlamagne is now on my short list of people who I hope become the new host. I did not know that much about him, but I enjoyed his week.

I didn't like him at all.  He had a previous show on Comedy Central and I watched it a lot because I kept thinking I should like it, but I just didn't.

But if he IS going to be the new host, I hope like hell they give him a pencil with an eraser on both ends instead of a pen, so maybe it won't make so much racket when he keeps tapping it on the desk.

  5. Today, on the radio I heard Jacky Rosen (Jewish senator who's been threatened) say, "The antisemitic threats issued against me by this gentleman..."

    Gentleman??

People do this all the time and I just don't get it.  Why go out of your way to use "gentleman" in a context like this, when the perfectly serviceable (and actually far more appropriate) "man" and "person" or even "individual" (if you want a long, smarter-sounding word) are available?

Plus she pronounced antisemitic as antisemetic, which I bitched about upthread.  She hit two hot buttons in the course of just a few words.

  6. This looks like it's right up my alley.  I think I'm going to love the cook.

I can never keep Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Alexander Payne straight.  Fortunately, I like all three so I just go without trying to figure out exactly who directed it.

  7. I'm working from memory here, but I remember on an earlier episode Orion mentioned being raised in a matriarchy and I thought, Oh that's good--he gets it.

But then when he mentioned being raised in a matriarchy to Lauren's father, it was in the context of not wanting to be bossed around.  Heh.

I thought it had to do with her recent appendectomy, which was also the reason she didn't want a dress that was tight on her torso.

Btw what kind of work does Clare do?  I hope she makes enough to support bicycle boy because I'm kinda thinking his shop is in hosts, for nine years, garage!!!

Mr. Outlier does a lot of mountainbiking in the Denver area so I showed him Cameron.  I'd noticed his shirt said "Broken Carbon" and I said, "I thought broken carbon is a bad thing."  He said he'd heard there was a guy in Denver who fixes broken carbon bike frames.

There's a bunch of specialty bike repair shops around there that have a national presence (people outside the area send their stuff to them to fix).  Cameron's shop fixes carbon frames, there's a place that re-soles the shoes mountainbikers wear, another rebuilds shocks, and there's a guy who makes custom bags for bikepacking.  I've been to all of these except Cameron's place--thank god, because carbon bike frames cost thousands of dollars, and repairing them would probably be a lucrative business and the opposite of lucrative for its customers, but less of a hemorrhage than buying a new frame.

But if he does break his frame and we're in the area, I'll offer to be the courier--I'm assuming it will be much more fun going there than the shoe repair place.

And to Clare's credit, as confused and dismissive as she was about the stuffed animal, she grokked the minute he opened his mouth.  But man is he tall.  My maximum height difference ever was 9 or 10 inches, and it seemed like a lot.  Cameron's at least a foot taller than she is, maybe more.

Boy, I don't know.  I'm a proficient bike rider and tried a tandem bike once and it was awful.  Like, so bad I happily went back to riding my own bike, where I have to do all the pedaling myself, and I'm lazy.

I tell them apart because Faith has a resemblance to a younger version of Dr. Phil's wife Robin (which someone also mentioned upthread).

I'm the only one who's mentioned Dr. Phil's wife, but it was because Kathy, not Faith, reminded me of her.  A lollipop head and mincing steps (the way Robin walks when Phil leads her out of the audience).  And always kind of hunched over.

When I looked back to see if I'd actually posted that, I ran across this post, about Susan:

    Quote

So, my sister told me there is a local from Aston, PA. I was curious and looked at the bios.  Holy Toledo, Batman, I know who she is!  Susan Noles, wedding officiant. But, she was a hair stylist for many years and she cut my hair for about 5 years, 20 years ago. I liked her because she did more edgy cuts, but they were super expensive.  Anyhoo, she was wild! Dated guys online from Plenty of Fish and met one. I think they had a kinky relationship.  She had her lip liner tatooed back in the day when that was a thing. Was married to Phillies pitcher, Dickie Noles. I believe he was the pitcher when they won the World Series in 1980. He turned very religious. Unless Susan has mellowed, she was rough and tumble, and wild! It'll be interesting to see her all these years later!  There's no way she doesn't still have that wild streak!

She wasn't a rapist. She claimed to kill them.

I figured serial killers were includable when talking about rapists and monstrous dictators.  But now that you mention it, I believe raping and monstrously dictating are the province of men, so maybe there was an effort to exclude crimes and behavior that women commit that I didn't pick up on.  Apologies.

There are plenty of people I wish could rise to being moderately stupid.

Then again, how do you define "good"?  Will they be happier if they're not so stupid?  Probably not, actually.

How do some little boys grow up to be rapists? What happened to Ted Bundy, a bright, young man on his way to becoming a lawyer? And then there are the monstrous dictators. They were all once little boys.

I wonder if Gerry was that romantic with his wife?

My mom's best friend passed away and her husband remarried. He was constantly holding his new wife's hand and nuzzling up close to her, my mom was a bit disgusted because he never was affectionate with her friend his first wife.

Was your mom around when this guy was first going out with his first wife and he wasn't affectionate even then?

I've been doing a thought experiment by inserting Toni into the lineup, using the photos we've seen as a guide.  Would he be attracted to her, as a stranger, over the others?

Do you think they fill out info about themselves like things they simply won’t do. I’m terrified of flying and it makes me sick so when I saw the helicopter I was like “nope I’m out”, like I seriously would have refused. Can they do that’s?

There's suspicion that in the young version of the show, people do put down their greatest fears and producers intentionally send them on dates doing that very thing.  I'm not a historian of the show--has anybody ever flatly refused to do a one-on-one's activity?  Conquering your fear in the protective arms of the bachelor is a thing.

But that brings up an interesting angle.  Would a 25-year-old you with an eye toward either finding your person or boosting your social media numbers tell the producers "No, I'm too scared of flying"?  I consider my ability to say "no" to just about anything I choose to be a benefit (and result) of getting older; I was much more compliant and cooperative when I was young.  I wonder if the producers have had to "adjust" their approach.

Then again, we have Sandra, the oldest combatant, eating ice cream she knows will make her sick just to play Never Have I Ever, and that wasn't even a chance to prove herself on a group date (although it worked out well for her).

I had no idea who Nate Bargatze was before watching this.

Me, neither, but anyone who comes up with "I have more in common with a pilgrim" deserves to be searched for.  I found a couple of his comedy specials free on Tubi.

    On edit:

I searched for Bargatze and it turns out what I found on Tubi were specials directed by Nate Bargatze.

    However, I'd read this upthread:

    Quote

Be sure and check out his specials on Amazon or Netflix. If you aren't in tears laughing at the Starbucks story, then I can't help you.

and one of the descriptions of programs I found mentioned a Starbucks story.  So I got confused.  But I ended up watching a performance by Greg Warren and it was a riot.  And I'm guessing that every standup act has a Starbucks story these days, so I shouldn't let it be a filter.

Patrick Stewart remembering his childhood was so nice.

    Yes it was.

The only place I see most of these people is on this show, so I'm pretty sure Patrick Stewart has told the story about Ian McKellen's note to him about Macbeth before (the important word in "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" is "and").

Shakespeare pretty much always flies over my head but this made sense and stuck in my memory.  It was particularly apt this time because he was passing it on to Ralph Fiennes, who's currently doing Macbeth.  But to be honest, if he's going to repeat stories, I'd much prefer the one about how he thought for his entire life he'd been circumcised, only to find out from his wife, and verified in a subsequent doctor visit, that he wasn't.   That's one hell of a guy who can tell that story on himself, and it makes want to read his memoir (to the point of actually buying it, because I doubt it'll show up in a Little Free Library any time soon (my sole source of books)).

And who knew there was pushback on having a bald Picard?  That seems crazy, in retrospect.  (I'll add that in my book, it's a rare white man who looks good bald, but yes yes yes to Patrick Stewart.)

I don't know this Bella Ramsey, but she's adorable.  And she really does look 12.

I've noticed that after the guest says "Let's start the show" (or "Make it so," depending), we don't get the opening credits anymore, with the Barbie dolls and TV sets going into water.

I just checked this episode on Spectrum On Demand and they have the Barbies and TVs.  It wouldn't surprise me one bit that different platforms show different stuff.  On Battlebots this week, I recorded both the live version on Spectrum and the on demand version; the on-demand version was 15 minutes shorter and it wasn't just ads not being shown--the on-demand version abruptly cut away from one segment about 15 seconds before it was over, but the live version aired that part.

  17. I really enjoyed Desus Nice.  He's such an appealing guy, and the material was perfect for him.  When he showed the nine men running for speaker of the house and three of them were the same photo?  He was right--I didn't notice.  But really, the whole week was a lot of fun (but I don't always watch the interviews).

I'm kind of thinking I might like the carousel of hosts to be permanent.

Cincinnati: I was sure they'd take the first place, since the second had no parking and the third was full of furniture.

But the first place didn't have a living room--it was more like a very large entry way.  I assumed the living room would be on the second floor, but nope--only bedroom.  AND there was a half bath right there by the kitchen

While we were touring the second house, I thought, "I guess it's good that they're showing it to us because it's interesting, but there's no way they'll get that one."  But they did.  I was shocked.

And then I got shocked again when I realized I heard correctly, and the Charleston, West Virginia, HH named her son Havoc.

But re-watching it reminded me that the one guy said he would make the bathroom next to the kitchen off limits while he's preparing dinner.  Maybe I'm unusually careful in my bathroom habits, but I just don't get it.  What's going to fly out of the bathroom and turn the corner and get on the food?
