  1. I was wondering why no one was commenting on that beautiful dog.  Tom mentioned that he and his dog stayed in a Airbnb.

By the way, Oregonlive often has day after feature stories about Top Chef Portland.  (That's where I think I may have read about Tom's dog.)

  2. Anyone watch Romeo and Juliet on Great Performances

I know it's getting rave reviews, but I missed a lot of the language.  What was left seemed particularly dark and depressing.   Romeo and Juliet is a romantic comedy until act three.   I missed those lighter moments.

I also couldn't get past the memory of Josh O'Connor's Prince Charles to accept him as Romeo.   Because so many of Mercutio's lines were cut, I didn't get a sense of the friendship/relationship between him and Romeo.  In this version, it would have made more sense for Benvolio to kill Tybalt.

  3. The worst wildfires in Oregon started all over the state on Labor Day.   I thought it looked a little like Oregon fog when they got back to Portland, but it could have been smoke.   (Actually, according to this article, it probably was a bit of wildfire smoke).

"I got to Portland Aug. 30. Everybody had to quarantine for 10 days (before) we began filming, anywhere between 15- and 18-hour days, waking up very early in the morning to get COVID-tested. We all had our own individual rooms — compared to previous seasons, where (contestants move into) a big house and sleep in bunk beds. We had the luxury of having privacy and our own floor of the hotel. That we were able to finish production was something to admire."

  4. Does anyone else wonder if Skylar has already made a commitment to another project next year?  Except for the first few episodes, Max and Zoey have been rarely together, almost as if the powers that be want the audience to get off the Zoey/Max train.

Maybe the two actors secretly despise each other. (I'm joking...I think).

  5. The game last light reminded me of what happened to my Oregon State Beavers when they played Houston.  Houston absolutely dominated the first half with their smothering defense, and the Beavers' shooting was cold.  In the second half, Beavs found their rhythm and actually made it a game, tying it up in the last few minutes.

The difference is Gonzaga never did figure out how to slow the Baylor scoring machine (those threes).

In other news, Beavs get overlooked again in the "One Shining Moment" montage.  You'd think a team that made it to the Elite Eight and defeated Sister Jean's Ramblers a little more respect.

And how much pressure they have to win these games. My heart can’t handle those poor guys devastated every year.

I hate UCLA but go PAC12! I can see the same SEC bias in commentating like football when the UCLA player gets hacked at the end of regulation when he made his bucket while the guy admitting “oh there was a bit of a grab”, and then making a big deal right before the bucket when he thought the UCLA player had a charge before he passed the ball (newsflash, he didn’t).  Glad that the PAC12 are sticking it to everyone else.

This is why I sync up OSU legend, Mike Parker, with the broadcast.  His enthusiasm makes a Beaver win that much better.

I don't know if OSU will win today against Houston, but they have been a lot of fun to watch.

  7. I thought the contestant who answered The Nicene Creed should have been given credit for their response.  The wording of the clue was asking for something specific, (the men who created the creed) and I guess that's why it wasn't allowed.

  8. I hate to be critical, and maybe it's because I'm really sleepy tonight, but I didn't enjoy this episode that much.  I'm really not interested in Zoey having a fling with a Kurt Cobain wannabe.

There's too much going on...too many stories to follow.  It's all a little superficial, and it's hard to feel that deep connection I did last year.  Maybe it would have been better if there'd been a significant time jump...then they could meaningfully explore Maggie's flirtation with the handsome client.

Maybe Covid protocols have affected the production more than we realize...or maybe success has gone to their heads a bit, and they're trying too hard to impress.  Whatever has changed, I hope they can get back whatever is missing (for me at least) so Zoey's sophomore year isn't the show's last season.

The "mailbox" ad for Toyota kind of confused me - why are they driving to that rural mailbox and mailing cards from there?  I didn't get that she was mailing home-made ornaments that then show up on the tree.  Her (service member) dad then surprises her there.  But the song was used for a British (?) missing person crime procedural, so that didn't work for me for the commercial.  I read Toyota's description of the ad, so I better understand it, but then how good is it if it's confusing?  The little girl is adorable, though!

Thank you for clarifying the commercial.  I had no clue there was such a complicated narrative.  🙂

The family is adorable, but that song is not my favorite.  Why not have a nice instrumental?  That way we could focus on the cute family rather than the annoying vocalist.

  10. I am surprised by the criticism for this years' Bake Off.  It was nice to have something warm and comforting to look forward to every Friday.  Mel and Sue (I still miss them both) made the occasional PG-13 pun, so I either didn't notice or wasn't offended by Noel's humor.  British sit-coms are full of humor that's more like a raunchy episode of SNL than the average episode of "Young Sheldon".

I think the bakers were really hurt not to have a full week to 'rehearse' their bakes.  Laura would have adjusted her recipe for custards if she'd had a full week to catch the weaknesses.

Maybe the show is missing the gentle, (grand)motherly presence of Mary Berry to offset some of the silliness of Noel and Matt (and the coldness of Paul).  Prue seems to take intentional delight in setting up impossible challenges.  As a high school teacher, I know if everyone fails a test, that is on me, the writer of that test.  I also thought her quip to Hermine, "By your standards, it's a failure," was especially mean-spirited.

  11. There have been quite a few stories showcasing the costumes worn by Emma Corrin this season.  Does anyone else think some of the costumes were made deliberately too large for the actress, almost like she was a child playing dress-up?  I think she does a great job vocally capturing Diana's voice and cadence, but she seems so child-like.

I have nothing against Ken Jennings or other former champs in the Jeopardy! family for interim, but...

I just wish they could find someone new.  A show-biz pro (which is what Alex was; Alex was not hired because he knew trivia), maybe someone in their 30s.  An up-and-comer from broadcasting that is not currently famous.  There must be a lot of people like that out there.

I mentioned the journalist who interviewed Alex earlier in this thread.  It'd be nice to see him get an opportunity to guest host

I love the Christmas one for Kohl's where the little girl and the woman next door hold up notes to each other, then the woman disappears, and reappears a longtime later, and has a hospital bracelet on.     Then the woman writes a note asking if the girl received what she wanted for Christmas, and when the little girl says yes, you know that she wanted her friend next door to come back.

Thanks for pointing out the hospital bracelet.  I hadn't noticed it and wondered why the nice neighbor had disappeared.
