And they both like boiled hotdogs?  I mean, that's a huge hurdle they cleared already.

Hahaha Alex told the story of her dad getting her boiled dogs from hot dog carts on the way home from school but didn't *exactly* endorse the boiled dog now - she deferred to the fiance's preference IIRC. But yes, that's the give and take of a good relationship. Plus, you can always boil some and grill some (it's actually good to boil before you grill, imo).

    S1.E9 The Pad Thai Gamble

This episode was so interesting. I loved that the other two soldiers asked to be stationed in Las Vegas so all three of their wives could be close to each other. One thing that always annoys me/makes me sad is how immigrant food is expected to be cheap. People bitch if a taco costs more than $2 or if Chinese food is expensive. People claim to love these kinds of food but then balk at having to pay higher than fast food prices, yet they are totally willing to pay $20 for a bowl of pasta with sauce. That's why it's always surprising to me when restaurants like this one are able to charge higher prices and not only stay open but become very successful. More power to them!

I'm looking forward to watching this episode. Many years ago, having read about Lotus of Siam on the Chowhound message boards, on a business trip to Las Vegas I insisted to my co-worker that we go there (aside: the Chowhound forums used to be robust and a great source of information on restaurants to visit in any given city or region, but then they changed them and they became essentially useless. Why, Chowhound, why?).

Back to the story. It's Vegas, right? So I dressed up and we called a cab and when it pulled up to the, to put it kindly, decidedly not fancy strip center, we looked at each other with trepidation and my companion laughed at me. I said, let's go in. After a rather lengthy wait, we were shown to a table. The menu is large, and so even though we were familiar with Thai food, we asked the server to choose dishes for us. Thus began what is easily one of the best meals I've ever had. It's a great memory.

I know this commercial has been around a while, but can anyone explain the Kim Crawford wine commercial?  Some chick walks into a store wearing her yoga outfit, grabs a bottle of Kim Crawford and a pair of sunglasses and walks out, appearing not to pay for anything.  Then you have the two women pushing a cart, staring at yoga woman like she’s some tasty morsel.  What the hell?

I think the point is that women who drink Kim Crawford wine are so freaking cool that everyone is in awe of them. The link below is to a mashup of three of the ads. I have to admit, it took me a long time to get that in the first one, the woman on the left catches the cork from the wine bottle (I thought she was waving at the chef haha).

I do like that the ads concentrate on friendships between women and not trying to catch or please a man.

  4. I watched two and a half of the UM episodes yesterday.

Rey Rivera: fascinating mystery and heartbreaking for his wife Alison. The video of their wedding when she burst into delighted laughter after putting the ring on his finger captured a moment of pure joy that was just beautiful. She is one of the most compelling and sympathetic family members I've ever seen in a story like this. But something was going on with Rey that she didn't know. There wasn't a mention of forensic investigations of his computer or his phone (other than identifying that last phone call). No mention of whether the family has hired private investigators to try to get more information about his employer or from his colleagues. And there is the possibility that he had an undiagnosed/emerging mental illness. However, the phone call, him rushing out to apparently meet someone, the circumstances of where his body was found and its condition sure don't seem to support the suicide theory.

The French aristocrat episode: too long and dragged out. It could have easily been told and been far more engaging in half the time.

Alonzo: I'm sad to say that this one, again, was too drawn out and just plain boring. I didn't finish the episode.

This series needs to look back at what made the original such a success, pick up the pace, and do multiple stories (even just two) in each episode. Add a narrator. I hate to use this word in connection with people's personal tragedies, but make it entertaining.

  5. I'm not at my sharpest these days, but why is Burger King running "Merry Christmas" 2-for-1 ads? From what I've seen, they aren't even using the silly "Christmas in July" trope.

I mean, enjoy your bargain Whoppers, I have long thought that they are one of the best fast food burgers, but it ain't Christmas. Or is it? What are you doing to me, BK?

  6. The choice of the new CEO is welcome: a woman of color with a lot of experience in executive management in a wide range of fiction and non-fiction television productions. Per the article linked above:

    Quote

Lucas, who serves on the Peabody Awards' Board of Jurors and is the former vice chair of the national NPR board, comes to Hallmark after most recently serving as president and CEO of Public Broadcasting Atlanta, where she oversaw the city's NPR and PBS stations. Before that, she was CEO at Black-focused cable network TV One, where she spent a year on the job. Prior to that, Lucas was exec vp and COO for Discovery and Science Channel, where she oversaw strategy and operations. She joined Discovery Communications in 2008 as chief marketing officer after roles as GM of the Weather Channel Networks. She's also spent time at TBS, CNN and in brand management roles at Coke and Clorox.

Bonus: She was GM of The Weather Channel networks! She will know exactly how to handle the next Winter Storm Megan! LOL

I can't stand her either but perhaps she's referring to her bank online account posting that the money is there?

Nah, she says she's at the office boasting to her co-workers that she already got her pay, while they are losers waiting for payday. I'm sure she's very popular at work.

Perez getting indignant about Judy showing up at the hospital made me roll my eyes. She framed it as being protective but she's really just being territorial. The fact that she brought up Steve being missing was also pretty weak. She has nothing to connect Judy to Steve's disappearance so using that as a reason as to why her ex shouldn't be seeing her seemed desperate to me.

I liked that even though Jen clearly did not like Parker, she still told Charlie not to be a jerk to her. I get that he's a hormonal fickle teenager but in the previous episode, he told Judy he didn't even know if he liked Parker. If you're going to steal a car and drive it illegally to impress a girl, you should at least like her!

It's been so long since I watched this that I don't remember why Judy and Perez were at the hospital, but I agree that this love triangle was some weak writing.

My take on Charlie and Parker is that she is a popular and influential girl at school and Charlie was caught up in finally being one of the cool kids and having a girl want to make out (and more) with him, even though he was realizing that she wasn't a nice person. He did want to impress her. I think it's an understandable teenage decision. Hell, a lot of us make bad decisions based on social status and sex well beyond our teen years.

And, if your employer doesn't deposit the funds two days early, then you can't get it two days early.  And unless your rent or credit card payments are due one to two days before your pay date each month, does that two days really make any difference to anybody?  You should spend more time worrying about managing your money better instead of "boasting" about stupid stuff.

Let's face it, the target audience for these ads and the so-called service advertised isn't people who are sophisticated financial consumers. If it saves them from predatory "payday loans" I can't say it's bad.

Well, the ads are bad. No doubt about that.

As hokey as it may seem that Jen started crying, a friend of mine teaches movement classes and he says there are certain exercises that cause people to cry. It's not like a room of people all burst into tears but he said it's not uncommon for people to start crying for apparently no reason during his classes and it's usually during the same one or two exercises.

It hasn't happened to me, but I have heard that the same thing happens to a lot of people when they get massages. It's something about the combination of muscle release and compassionate touch.

There's a commercial for Hershey's Kisses with a couple being interviewed about their first kiss.  The guy goes on about how great it was while the girlfriend (interviewed separately) contradicts everything the guy is saying.    Everything about the guy emanates douchebag vibes.  He clearly thinks he's the shit and and he changed this woman's life when he bestowed his lips on hers.   I can't feel sorry for her being saddled with this walking ego though because not only did she pick him, she's still with him.    And for as much as he comes off as a douchbro, she comes off as a yogurt bitch who giddily enjoys pointing out what a bad kisser he is on national TV.   They appear to deserve each other,  I don't know why any of this is supposed to make me wan to buy Kisses.

This ad is disturbing to me. He says she knew the kiss was coming; she says it was a total shock. It's so indicative of the entitlement some men feel to women's bodies, which can actually lead to rape ("I could tell she wanted it"). Hershey's really missed the mark with presenting this as cute.

Am I supposed to know who DJ Khaled is? I hate commercials that assume I know some D-list celebrity or some sports figure.

DJ Khaled is far from D-list. Did you assume he's an athlete because he's a person of color?

Google is your friend: DJ Khaled is an American DJ, record executive, songwriter, record producer, author, and media personality.

There's a similar voice on a commercial for a show on HGTV* called Good Bones**, and the way the woman -- who may be a host of the show? -- pronounces "nine" and "Bones" makes me nuts too. I realize it's probably not their fault, but I just cannot deal with it!

*And don't even get me started on the ubiquitous HGTV  commercial (and Love It or List It) narrator(s?); she has (they have?) the same things happening!
**Like "bow," as in "take a bow," with "ns" at the end.

Ugh, that sounds like the awful "Howsh howsh baby" song in the Downy commercial, sung in a too-precious croon. Like fingernails on a blackboard.

Did anyone watch the latest Takeout Version of DDD with Guy's friends? Hunter was trying to make empanadas because that was Antonia's dish that she sent, and he said something like "Don't judge me!" because they didn't turn out entirely right. So he can be a judge on GGG and judge actual chefs that are colleagues of his dad but they can't judge him? Antonia and the others are nice to him, at least from what I could tell, but they still very much treat him like "the son of my friend/co-worker." Hunter seems to think he's on their level and he's not.

Awww, come on, "don't judge me" is a common joke to make when you know you've done something potentially embarrassing. He wasn't admonishing the guests chefs.

Everyone who loathes Hunter is welcome to do so, but I think some fairness would be... fair.

I agree this wasn't something Alex came up with for her ego.  Good Network needs new content and this is one way they can do it   As I mentioned before, this is just a riff on Chopped: After Hours which has the judges ( and sometimes Ted) given a difficult basket to see how they would approach it.

I didn't remember Chopped: After Hours (they should re-run it!) but I do know that the most recent season of Top Chef had some extra online segments on Bravo called "What Would Tom Do?" in which Tom Colicchio would take on a challenge from an episode. Of course, it was Tom, so he didn't follow the same time constraints (as he said in one segment, "I'm not running around the kitchen."), but it was a pleasure to watch him cook and his food mainly looked fantastic.

I've watched Supermarket Stakeout a couple of times, I just hate the whole concept, I think it's idiotic. I'm not fond of Alex. And I hate outdoor cooking in parking lots, on beaches, in the mountains, you get the picture, in all cooking competitions. However, given the amount of time I'm spending with FN on my TV, I have no doubt that I will see WWAM at some point.

It appears Hunter is lazy, complacent, boring, and not a very good "chef "

That seems harsh to me. He's 21 years old. I had heard that he worked in Guy's restaurants from a young age and on the new DDD at Home in which he serves as an assistant, he seems have a decently deft hand in the kitchen. I did a little googling and this article recounts his experience and education so far. It is a bit over the top to me in its adulation of him, and the denial of any nepotism (no, nope, not at all, no sir) is silly. So Hunter just happened to talk to Gordon Ramsey to obtain an internship? Gosh, that must be easy for anyone to do!

But, it sounds like he's been working in kitchens and on his education so I don't think that labeling him as lazy and complacent is necessarily fair.

I agree that he doesn't have a compelling TV presence. But, 21.  Maybe someday.

This morning Jeff was making a dressing and put honey into it.  He said he believes the Greeks invented honey.  No, Jeff, the bees invented honey.

Plus, a Greek salad with no feta? No pepperoncini? Did it even have Kalamata olives? I don't remember seeing them on the show, so I checked the recipe on FN's website and it does call for them. I did appreciate the pickled red onions instead of raw, but would it kill them to tell viewers how to make those, much less how to "can them properly"?

And his construction was all wrong. If you are serving immediately, you lightly toss the lettuce with dressing, then you can do your "fancy" laying on of the other ingredients and drizzling the remaining dressing.

I just presumed it was her SO. I only saw the last 7 or 8 minutes & was trying to figure out who was doing the camera work (guess the food wasn't interesting enough 😉). Rachael Ray's husband has been doing her camera work so that's why I thought this guy was Giada's fella.

Pretty much all of the FN shows have been claiming that all of the camera work on the "quarantine at home" shows is being done with iPhones or the like by the stars' significant others or children or nannies (🙄 Amy Schumer) even though it is obvious that there is crew of some sort there. Please, FN, we viewers are not idiots.
