I was only half paying attention to most of the first round (edit: and the second 🙄), but I got Television Without Pity! Sadly I discovered it only months before it shut down. 😞 I miss the recaps.

Also buckyball, which my uncle (by marriage) won a Nobel prize (with two others) for discovering. 😊

TWoP brought back memories. I was a long time poster and lurker after I got kicked out the first time (a new IP address & user name got me back on the board. Don’t tell anyone. LOL) They had some strict moderation on that site.

Johnny's paternal grandmother (according to wiki) said she had some Cherokee ancestry. That easily could have been black ancestry instead.

That’s the conclusion i came to a long time ago. My grandmother’s grandmother was allegedly Native American but I think she was probably mixed race and passed as white. I have nothing to base that on, just a feeling.

My impression of Pharrell Williams' reaction was that he had worked hard to be a peaceful, non-angry person, a pacifist, and then was confronted with some very ugly facts -- and first-person words! -- about his ancestry, and he literally didn't know what to do with the anger and hatred they instilled in him. That was world-changing for him.

I also enjoyed seeing his parents' names and realizing that his unusual name is a portmanteau of theirs.

As for tonight's show, (1) who knew that Johnny Cash was an amateur genealogist!? That's so cool. And (2) I know NOTHING about country music, and hadn't heard of Clint Black, but I thought he looked a lot like young Roy Rogers.

    I love this show.

When Clint Black first became well known, Roy Rogers was still alive and I believe they may have even recorded together. I’m sure there are pictures floating around the internet.

I thought MR did fine, but I preferred KJ. MR was a bit too...exuberant, maybe? But he is fine as a sub.

If he filled in last minute because of scheduling changes with the ToC, I wonder who was initially scheduled to host the ToC?

I haven’t read anything so I’m just speculating but I’m assuming that a new host will be in place by the time the next season starts and whoever they get for the host will host the TOC.

I watched the end of The Chase last night and it struck me that Brad Rutter is looking a bit frail. Is he healthy?

In the regular season thread, there's a new discussion of how awful Vanna White was when she took over for Sajak and someone mentioned finding Sajak intolerably smug. I agree with that and would add Jane Lynch and Ellen DeG. to the list of intolerably smug people that I do NOT want to see hosting J!, stunt or otherwise.

I'm also a bit leery of the exec producer hosting two weeks' worth of shows. Would Friedman have done such a thing?

I’m okay with Mike Richards hosting for a couple of weeks. The few times I’ve seen him since Alex died he seems okay on camera and apparently he’s hosted other things. It can’t be easy for the guest hosts to just jump in without getting onboard with the pace of the show.

My first landlady had done some genealogical research. She knew someone in her line was a "child of the hospital" in Italy, like Meloni's ancestor. In her mind, I don't know how she got the "information," that meant she was descended from a count. She had stationary made with "Countess G...etc." printed across the top. Yes, she was a nut.

There’s an old movie based on a book by Raphael Sabbatini (I think that’s his name) called Anthony Adverse and that’s basically the story. He’s put in a foundling wheel but he’s secretly the son of a noble person who impregnated the wife of another rich guy. 😂 That’s all I thought of after that was revealed although I didn’t actually think Meloni’s ancestor was a count or anything.

  7. I read yesterday that the producer, Mike Richards, is going to host for a couple of weeks while the guest hosts get up to speed on how to host the show.

I hate to say this because I really like her as an actor, but I’m not really looking forward to Mayim Bialik or Katie Couric hosting. I know Mayim is smart (I mean, she’s has a PhD. for goodness sake) but it doesn’t seem like a good fit for her. Couric doesn’t seem to have the necessary seriousness + wit to do a good job. It isn’t that I wouldn’t want a woman to host, but all the names being floated around don’t do it for me, unless they give Aisha Tyler a chance. I guess I’m just disappointed because no one I’d like to see has been mentioned.

  8. I think Katie Couric will do just fine and I’m okay with getting a few women in there to try. Aisha Tyler is another person I’d like to see get a chance. I would really like for Ben Mankiewicz from TCM to get a chance, but he has many irons in the fire and might not want to give up any of those other jobs he has.

That was a great interview, j5cochran.  Thanks for sharing.  It's nice to hear from someone who had the opportunity to meet him, that he is (was) as nice as he seems.  I agree that coming up with 5 anecdotes that complete strangers will find interesting sounds very daunting, perhaps scarier than playing the actual game (given that anyone who makes the show can clearly answer most of the questions.)  I think most games are probably decided by who manages to have the right buzzer rhythm, would you agree?

When I was on the show & the production staff members were briefing us, I did find that the most daunting thing—trying to come up with anecdotes about my life. Alex asked me about returning to college as an older student (I was 38 when I returned to school and was in the middle of that all when I was a contestant at age 44.) But since I didn’t win, I didn’t have to worry about any additional stories because my other two were lame.

He has a great voice.  I could see him hosting.

He wouldn’t want anyone to see how bald he is without the ubiquitous trucker hat. When he first started on camera appearances ~25 years ago, he was already doing a creative combover. I imagine the top is pretty much gone now.

I'm not sure about ken as host but will give him a chance

Interesting they said a series of guest hosts 'from the jeopardy family'. That seems to rule out a bunch of people who have been discussed in the media.

But Jeopardy family could mean anything—clue givers, celebrity contestants, popular champions. It’s not going to be easy to fill those shoes. From what I gathered, the guest hosts will be appearing on more than one week of shows. Maybe a month at a time, so they probably have 4-6 months of shows to get in the can before the season is over. Although the producers could do a couple of weeks of shows in 2-3 days.

Didn't Leslie claim this was a real Supermarket in one episode?  I could swear I heard her say that. Of course different supermarkets have totally different aisle arrangements.

As for the knocking stuff over, Leslie's big issue was a contestant putting it back. But she did say the alternative was putting it in the cart. It was clear that just leaving it on the ground wasn't allowed.

It’s not a real market. I think I read “somewhere” that it was set up at an old airport hangar. I think the reason it’s seems artificial is because there’s no audience which I find makes a more fun experience. You don’t notice so much on a show like Jeopardy but this show & The Price is Right needs audience energy to put it over. Drew Carey seems to be begging the viewers to stick with them because that show just does not seem the same without the encouragement from the people.

I’m so confused over the first episode tonight.  Why didn’t they total the blue team’s buggy?  I rewound it even and never saw an explanation or total for them???  Did I miss something?

The blue team in the first half Team Chocolate total was $1417 and the blues in the second half Team Sweets had $3349. Leslie did the total differently in the 2nd half where she added everything but their inflatable because they got the super bonus and depending on which tag they pulled, it would determine who would go for the Super Sweep. Build suspense.

I don't remember Jeopardy! second and third place prizes being like that. I remember "The Olympic Pin Set", and "The Guitar", were popular consolation prizes for a time. I know a lady who was on Let's Make a Deal a long time ago. I think their booby prizes were called "Zonk"s or some such. This woman won one of those. She was living in NYC at the time and said she was flabbergasted the day a delivery truck drove up to her (apartment) building and dropped off 1,000 lbs of fertilizer (the manure kind, not the chemical kind). She never thought they'd actually send it. But they did! I think she donated it to the NYC Parks Dept.

When I was a contestant in 1997, the show was still giving away consolation prizes instead of cash. Plus the parting gifts. I came in third & got a gift certificate from Service Merchandise for $1,000. Second place was a trip to Fiji! More valuable than $2,000 that the  second place gets now. My parting gifts were reasonable amounts of lotion & vitamins plus other stuff. I gave the lotion & vitamins to my co workers. I worked in a large call center so it wasn’t too difficult to get rid on the stuff. I bought a ring with my gift certificate so I still have it to remind me.

I also met him a few times on the TCM Cruises he attended. He was so friendly & funny. He was always a highlight from the cruises for me. People just loved him.

I messed up a lot tonight. I was mad at myself for missing Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions because I read it decades ago. I laughed that Colonel Sanders as it came up the other night. I couldn’t put my finger on Diego Rivera. All I could come up with was that artist who was married to Frida Kahlo. Le sigh.

Yeah I was kicking myself about BoC. It’s only been 43 years since I read it.
