So did Paige figure out that the Martha was connected to Phillip and Elizabeth?

I don't know if she figured it out already, but I'm sure she'll connect the dots eventually once she gets a bit time to think about it (it was pretty hectic day after all). Maybe she tells Philip? He did want to contact Martha's dad, so a warning from Paige that Stan talked with him could be helpful.

I just don't see what other ok options are out there for Jon if he must do a political wedding at the end of the series.

A White Walker. That story about the original NK is there for a reason.

I don't think Alice made a tape. Sounds to complicated for a preacher wife. Plus the office bugs/wire tap did not pick up anything about it.

You'd think she called their lawyer, if they have one at all - what use would they have for one? So maybe she did make a tape, but gave it to a friend and simply invented the lawyer part. Or there was no tape at all and it was a total bluff she didn't think Philip and Elizabeth would ever risk to call.
On the other hand, since she believed Philip and Elizabeth had him abducted/killed, it wouldn't be a stretch for her to think her phone might be tapped, so absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.

What information could Gaad possibly have, now that he's retired? Some details about internal stuff that Martha didn't know? Names of his superiors? A list of potential double agents they were circling in on?

    Untrue.

If Dany was around she'd just undermine Tyrion and Varys whenever their ideas contradicted hers in the slightest. Do you think Dany would've offered Astapor and Yunkai 7 years to do away with slavery? 7 Hells to the no, she'd say "No slavery" and when they ask how they're supposed to support their economy which until now had been entirely slavery based she'd say "Don't know, don't care." and retire to her room to fuck Daario.

I disagree. I used to criticize her because she didn't follow her advisers enough, but now I'm seeing why she didn't - Jorah and Barristan may be great swordsmen, but are lousy diplomats compared to Tyrion and Varys. The thing with Dany is - she can be reasoned with, if you pull the right strings and bring the right arguments.

1 hour ago, Eyes High said:

I don't see any reason to believe that Dany would be any more measured than she was with the khals. She would give the nobles a chance to bend to her will and, if they didn't show the appropriate degree of submission, she'd kill them, either personally (as she did with the khals), with her dragons and/or the Unsullied (as in Astapor), or by enlisting the common people to rise up and take them down. That's Dany's MO. .

There's two things about the situation with the Khals that were unique and won't apply to any further negotiation she might have:
    1. The Khals gave her the options of either being sold to the masters of Yulankapor, being raped to death or rot in that shitty hut - what the hell would be a "measured reaction" to that? She's not going to face such terms as a ruler.
    2. She always makes a point of offering the other party something. Maybe that's not always acceptable to them (like with the various slavers) and she needs a better salesman and often it is just "and I won't kill you", but hey - at least she IS offering that, as opposed to so many other rulers.

I do not believe for one moment that Tyrion has any intention whatsoever, of sticking to the deal he offered the slavers. Imo that was merely a stalling tactic designed to cut off the financial support for the SOTH. You cannot fight a war on 2 fronts; once Meereen is under control, they can turn their attention to deal with the other rebellious cities in whatever way they deem necessary, and I believe that is what he will explain to Dany when she returns.

Exactly, Tyrion was buying time. And time was exactly what they needed. Now, how much time it is remains to be seen (as every party knows they have to strike first), but right now, every day counts.

  5. But she's been running it that way because she didn't have the shrewd minds and political savvy of Tyrion and Varys. Had those two been with her from the beginning, Meereen never would've been this mess in the first place. I don't know what they would've come up with, but I'm sure it would be working right now.

I wonder if it's time for the whole "doom of Valeria" to finally enter this story.  Maybe Dani stops there on her way and picks up more dragonglass?  Ha.

It has to. Maybe the new red priestess from the trailer will help us there. Although if there's a physical object, I'm sure it's going to be Jorah's last task to retrieve it. He was there already and in his "final form" as a Stone Man would belong there. I've thought about Jorah's purpose for a while and I think that would be a great final act for him. Get whatever it is that's out there, sacrifice himself while fighting the Stone Men and deliver the magic MacGuffin to Dany with his dying breath.

Well, because countries and people always, one way or another, have leaders.

Sure they do, and that's what Jon and Dany will do. But the Iron Throne is a thing of the past. Jon has no desire for it and Dany, while she's always big about her birthright, has made a big speech about breaking the wheel. Whatever she imagines her rule to be, it won't be like what we've seen.

    14 minutes ago, Alapaki said:

But aren't both Dragonglass and Valyrian Steel both in short supply in Westeros?  And I do think they're huge, in numbers at least.  And the thing is that the more people they defeat, the bigger they get.

If anything, I'd say the fact that Dragons pretty much trump everything and everyone else weighs in favor that they are too obvious to be the endgame.

Valyiran steel yes, dragonglass no (there's ton of it in Dragonstone). And I doubt the WWs are huge in numbers. They have wights, yes (which can easily be burned by the dragons), but are probably having demographic problems of their own - why else would they need Craster's sons?

Agreed to the second part. They're far too powerful to simply smash the WWs in the endgame. There's gotta be more to it.

Nah the Others is just too huge for this to come down to a fight between men/women for the Iron Throne. If there is ONE ruler at the end of this story - I think they will half achieve it by survival alone. I would put ZERO predictions on Jon or Dany surviving the battle that saves the realm.

They're not huge. They're pushovers. They have a huge giant weakness - dragon glass. And Valyrian steel. And probably dragon fire, too. The wights are toast should the dragons come near them. Or wildfire. Or regular fire. This can't be the endgame, it would be far too easy.

Re: The Iron Throne: There won't be an Iron Throne when all is said and done. One of the biggest recurring themes in the story that's repeated over and over and over again (my friend, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction?) since the very beginning is that whoever's ass it is that graces the IT is goddamn fucking irrelevant. Why do people think someone will be sitting on that ridiculous thing at the end, rendering one of the most important, overarching themes of the series completely and utterly pointless?

  9. There's also Dorne. Even if Cersei comes out on top, she'll probably have to deal with the threat from the south first. And given that they killed her daughter, she has ample reason to. There's also the possibility that she learns that Sansa wasn't involved in Joffrey's murder. Maybe Olenna or Margaery spill the beans for whatever reason or LF, after officially aligning with Sansa, sends her a raven to split the Lannister-Tyrell alliance. Then there's Jamie, who swore to protect Sansa, who might intervene. Yeah, I don't see her going after Sansa.

It looks like Bran somehow gets stuck in said flashback.

But yea, how is LF getting everywhere so fast?

Yeah, he probably stole the weirwood-LAN password while Max von Sydow was taking a nap because he wanted to see what was inside the ToJ and stayed too long - he "drowned" and now the NK is onto him. Leaf or whoever it was waking him up is a clear sign that he did it alone. Anyway, I did NOT expect that scene to happen so early, more like episode 7 or 8 and

    Spoiler

the attack on the cave (assuming it is the cave they attack in the trailer)

in the finale. The season really is moving at a breakneck pace. Btw, do we have to put spoilers from official trailers into tags here or is it only for set news/other leaked stuff?

The fact that this woman is unsettling Varys is very interesting and the line about how she'll tell them the name of the Great Other (I'm assuming that's what she's talking about) and that she knows where it lives...creepy. I hope she basically fulfills the function of Moqorro. I like that we'll have another red priest to compare to Mel and Thoros.

    Spoiler

Totally forgot about that article. Yeah, that's some creepy shit right there if even Varys is scared. Why was the voice in the flames the Great Other? I thought it was R'hollor (if the two are two different gods/entities/demons/people/whatever in the first place).

Margery was cultivating the people of King's Landing, a bit surprised that she hasn't thrown out her charity work to the sparrow.

Wouldn't the HS know about that already through tons of sources? It comes across as much more believable if you don't feed it to him like "See? I'm totally pious!". Same with not claiming to know all the religious texts inside out. So she can say that learning about them opened her eyes. A slow, reluctant conversion is far more plausible in my opinion.

Contrast that with Osha, who took a far less subtle approach and literally threw herself onto Ramsay at the first opportunity. But he knew she was lying, so she had no chance.

This is more of a behind the scenes thing, but there was a blind item at The Gossip Life which said that she was going to do nudity again because her movie career has stalled.   (Putting it in this thread because it was brought up here, but if the lovely mods want me to move it, just say the word.)

At this point I confess I don't even care if Rickon is killed. I cared about Osha and it doesn't feel right to even pretend his survival is more important.

Second that. Rickon is such a non-entity with zero character traits. Osha was great, but she was dead the minute she was delivered to Ramsay. I just wished she would've managed to at least hurt him. I'm really tired of Ramsay's smug face, someone needs to tear him a new one, stat.

  13. Great verbal smack down between Mel, Davos and Brienne. Final rankings:
    1. Brienne. Accusing Davos and Mel of killing Renly was awesome, bragging about killing Stannis even more so.
    2. Davos. At least he got to deliver a nice burn (no pun intended) with the "I thought that was Stannis" line. But didn't get the truth about Shireen out of her and had to take a hefty blow by Brienne about the shadow baby.
    3. Mel. Davos was wiping the floor with her, but got interrupted and Brienne delivered the knockout punch with a great one-two combo.

I guess Emilia Clarke dropped the no nudity clause?  Or it was a body double.  In any case go Dany! I wasn't sure how she would escape their clutches and was glad she thought of her own way out instead of being rescued.

Doesn't mean she can't do nudity should she agree to it, she just said she would only do if it served the story. Bed scenes with Daario don't serve the story, but this scene sure as hell did.

Finally, Dany back to being awesome again. Easily her best scene since she took Astapor. Which was exactly three seasons ago. I really like that she did it without Drogon's help, which would have diminished the character growth somewhat. I was really excited about the Dothraki plot going into the season, as her season one story was by far her strongest, and it gave her the opportunity to go back to it and show what she learned. Pretty much straight out of the hero's journey and masterfully executed over the span of multiple seasons (if only Meereen wouldn't have sucked so hard).

So much great stuff in the rest of the episode, too. This was really a treasure trove of great talking scenes and did a great job of setting up the big flashy scenes that are sure to come.

Really looking forward to seeing Sansa and Jon (lovely reunion btw, and nice how Sansa acknowledged how she was a little brat) gathering support in the North. And they surely need it. 2000 Wildlings aren't all that much and they don't know about LF.

I just realized that they used Deutschland 83's theme songs, Major Tom (Coming Home)

I guess I should watch that show, being from Germany and all. Of course no one's streaming it here. Useless fact of the day, just for you: "Coming Home" is totally nonsensical, the original line "schwerelos" (weightless) was translated to something that had the long, stretchable "O" vocal in it.

"I'm gonna miss her." Elizabeth is starting to crack. She doesn't know it yet, but she knows it.

  17. Really liked the episode, this clicked a lot better than the first two. The only part that dragged on a little was (as usual) Sam and Gilly. A bit too much exposition while they were just sitting on a boat. Though I liked the part about Gilly pestering Sam with tons of question. Just let the man vomit in peace, goddammit.

The flashback to the tower was interesting and I like how it puts oh-so-honorable Ned a little bit in perspective. Jamie did have a point when they talked in season one. Curios how that shout to Ned worked. What did he hear? Could Bran theoretically change the past, despite what three-eyed raven said? Obviously he isn't going to cause major changes or we'd be undoing the entire show and possibly much more, but maybe he could influence the present in a significant way. There's probably some sort of mechanism in place that caused Ned to not understand or shrug it off as a hallucination, but this may not be the case if it isn't the past.

I even dug Arya's story this week. It wasn't more of the same, she clearly made progress. Finally we see her getting better at fighting, which is what will really help her. Sweeping floors may be necessary to humble her, but it isn't going to make her a better assassin. Loved the threat against the Waif, who is getting more and more jealous. Watch out girl, now that Arya can see again. I wonder if the Waif will go rogue and try to kill Arya if she rises above the Waif's position. For someone supposed to be no one, she has surprisingly big ego problems. That's some nice irony there.

I could've done without Tormund's pecker joke. It was funny enough, but felt really out of place. At least that was the only instance of misplaced humor this week. Tyrion trying to turn the Meereenes small council meetings into a drinking game worked much better for me. Over at the other smalI council, I liked the callback to the season three "game of chairs" (one of the best scenes the show has ever done), this time it was Jamie's turn.

Varys was really great, too. I love how he's able to play the game his way, it's so much more effective than brute force. I always thought she was the chief Harpy, though, so I was surprised to learn how she was just another cog in the machine. It does make sense, though, and turns a supposedly local problem into a full scale guerrilla war/game of whack-a-mole they cannot win. I hope they realize this once Dany makes her way back and at long last get their asses back to Westeros.

  18. That was certainly the worst/best episode yet. Other than Kathryn Alexandre's bit about the behind the scenes work, it was forgettable, but Joel Thomas Hynes (who plays what's-his-name) really eye-rolled it to another level. That look at 6:00 in was priceless. Anyone good at lip reading? No wonder this episode lasted only 14 minutes...

I assumed that when they talked about him contacting them they meant it in a more complicated way than him just calling them up so they would address these concerns.

That could be true. Maybe arrange for a good opportunity to contact them so the FBI can't even listen in. Have someone follow them so Philip can call them in a restaurant or something like that. I still think it would be safer to call them rather than contacting them in person, just in case they're under surveillance. But I do think Philip wants to speak to them and not just send a written message.
