It is interesting that others see it as a case of "ABC wanted to keep milking this cash cow and so decreed Once would now take on Frozen" while the fandom (myself included) has generally just accepted the showrunners' line of "We loved Frozen so much we begged ABC to let us do it, we're sooo lucky." I hadn't really questioned whether the push could be coming from the other end, but maybe it is?

I can believe that like loads of other people A&E did enjoy Frozen and are looking forward to using it for their Disney themed show, but it’s certainly not a coincidence that they decided to use last year's no.1 movie for a half season arc whilst its still insanely popular.

I always assumed it was a fairly convenient and savvy marketing ploy/continuation of the hype machine but all parties involved first and formost. A&E get the biggest Disney phenomenon in years on their show and to twist and turn to their hearts delight, ABC is happy with the increased publicity/maybe ratings for OUAT and Disney probably likes the opportunity to extend the hype further with new material within a year of the movie whilst they contemplate how, if at all the franchise can be expanded and extended further.

And given that the publicity surrounding the casting and arc far exceeds any other character that’s ever been in the show so far (including the ever popular Ariel who was a big one last year) it seems to be working very well. Although who knows what the actual story arc will bring, or of it will end up pleasing anyone at all.

LOL, it's a big risk for them too.  "What do you mean Elsa is Maleficient in disguise and she had an extramarital affair with Rumple's grandfather?"

Yeah that's exactly where I was going with my last sentence.

  2. I can think of several week male leads on the CW. The male leads on StarCrossed, The 100, The Secret Circle, The Tomorrow People and countless other shows.

There's actually more than a few people who think Stephen Amell was cast for for his looks/body and that his cousin was miscast on TTP. There's probably more prevealent complaining about actresses but I think "pretty boy ex model leads" aren't immune from it by any means.

As for Patton I think she's fine but I haven't particularly marked her in anything I've seen of her so far.

I think she was fine as Iris and as a character she certainly has a lot less WTF? baggage with Barry than Laurel did hanging around her neck with Oliver, she certainly has some potential. However I agree that I'm not enthused that she's the only character who doesn't know about Barry, which from previous experience suggests a season of side plots and probably bitchy angst from Barry.

  3. Actually I think NCIS is a decent comparison. The first few seasons (IMO) are a competently written but still engaging procedural which mostly succeeds on the strength of the character interactions with each other. Firefly is in a slightly different boat but if you look at it dispassionately its "TV Star Wars" or "too literal space western" but it becomes more than that on the strength of the writing and character interaction.

For me AOS was like both those but it didn't get beyond "competent enough fluff" writing and the characters were ok but didn't engage. They didn't have the chemistry with each other to overcome bland writing nor the writing to overcome a standard (possibly even stale) premise. Yes they were hamstrung a bit by CAP 2 but as said above a lot of shows "game change" after S1, especially genre shows. They could have tightened the writing and character interaction in even the blandest episodes to create better character moments and a set that didn't feel like it was being lived in by the characters. If you can't create something more interesting than what we got in 16 episodes because of someone else's lauded game changer, you really shouldn't be showrunning anything, all IMO.

As they put Elsa in there first, and because a character with rage issues who can cause disasters works for the Onceverse I expect Elsa to have the most in common with Frozen's Elsa. I expect every other character to be people that vaguely look like them, share the same names but have almost nothing in common with the actual characters. Elsa will have a sister named Anna and they'll probably be quite loyal to each other. That's the only thing they have to keep true. But stuff like Anna's clumsy, Anna's exuberant, Anna's whatever other major traits, yeah, maybe, maybe not. They're telling their version of this story. There will be things about OUAT's Frozen characters that will have nothing in common with their true Frozen counterparts and that will be done on purpose.

And this is why I agree with the wondering if the showrunners know what they've let themselves in fro both hype and storywise. We're still in the middle not even tail end of "these characters are perfect, don't touch them" part of fandom-phenomenon. I'm firmly in "wait and see with a side of doom" mode, but it will be interesting to see how it pans out if nothing else.

  5. It was ok, kinda formulaic but as others have said up thread that's to be expected from most CW shows and most comic books. Most of the cast were fine, though I didn't think anyone including Barry was particularly outstanding yet but it's early days. I agree that with the large amount of comic book and genre shows coming out the writing is going to have to step it up a notch.

  6. I'm not willing to write Mariah off just yet. Lots of people (including me) think they're all that and huge fish in small ponds and then they get to college and do more growing up in 3 months than they did the last 2 years of high school. Of course most of them don't have a family TV show, but that could be a source of embarrassment to her as much as prestige. The fact that she isn't home every week end and Meri isn't there camping on her floor is a good sign for them both.

  7. Except that they have a show that's a literal 1 hour infomercial.

Which is why its so insanely stupid that the site crashes every week. Seriously, its their best advertising and one which probably won't be around too much longer. They should invest in a better site immediately as a top priority. If you are a professional as opposed to hobby business then its worth spending money getting the right site, especially if its your main ordering platform.

  8. I think it should have been just Sisterwives' Closet without "My" which is just awkward all strung together however they punctuate it. They could then just do some general pieces that their fans might be in the demographic for without selling stuff Kody supposedly designed for each wife personally.  Also they presumably can find out which is the age and income demo they are most watched in, they should do some market research on what kind of jewellery those women like and design some affordable pieces for them. I mean they might have done that, but the site sure doesn't look like it, it's so random.

I can't get over charging someone $81.99 for a "sisterwife" ring. Oh, sorry, you're supposed to give it to your best friend/mother figure because she is a "Strong Woman".

  9.  The pace is slower if you don't do "fad" diets or have a medical problem but I've seen people loose a huge amount (healthily) in much less time then Janelle has supposedly been at it by combining exercise and calorie control, even if they had diabetes. I'm unconvinced she made drastic food changes for ages after she started trying to loose publicly for storyline reasons.

The flaw I see is that she's allowed her health to be a plot point.

True, but then Christine and Robyn allowed their births to be public. Anything that's vaguely interesting (and a lot that isn't) is up to be turned into a "storyline". I presume that if she really couldn't cope with it as a story for public entertainment she could nix it, instead of having her personal trainer front and centre a lot of the time.

  10. That fake investor, "Stephanie K" ("Stevie K"),  posted a couple of pics from the show and she's on there right now complaining about anonymous internet people who are "hateful evil beings" who bash people they know nothing about. She's also defending the website, ("I know for a fact that they don't have the ONLY site on the internet that goes down."):

If I had a business  where I was given a weekly shilling platform in front of my supposed "fans", who might actually buy my product. I'd move hell and high water to make sure it does crash every.single.week  during peak time. Because people might forget to come back during less busy times, especially if they can’t get on several weeks in a row. That’s to say nothing of the general basic fact that people serious about online retail in general should know that whilst lots of sites crash, every minute a site is not up is a minute they’ve lost a sale. Bozos.

  11. I guess its not a surprise after last season but I'm fairly Meh on this. I don't hate Amelia but she never really appealed to me either on GA or PrP (her "drug relapse" eps on PrP were ridiculous). They were struggling to find her something to do last season. I guess she's there to cover a bit for Derek and may even be an attempt to give Meredith a new "person" to bounce off for a while, though I'm not holding out much hope of anything meaningful as part of the Shepherd family, since they always shy away from that and its something I gave up on many seasons ago.

I think we'll get Richard's daughter as well, but they might try her out with being recurring this season and if she sticks (or even if she doesn't) then give her a contract next season.

  12. Idealism is one thing, but in a post-9/11 world I find it incredible to believe that a mother of children with a Middle Eastern last name wouldn't have made it her business to know every aspect of what is going on in Abbudin, or at the very least force her husband to actually tell her what's going on with him and his family. For her to tell him he's "joyless" -- bitch why have you been putting up with his joyless ass for 19 years? This is a marriage?

Especially with 9/11, more recent events *and Google*. Even if she thought his family seemed perfectly harmless, at the very least be curious about how things were affecting them and if it was going to impact her family. Especially as people she meets are also likely to be curious. I find it hard to believe they haven't been visited by which agency and asked about their family connections in 19 years. It's not like she's coming in to this post 9/11. Then again maybe she is a honeytrap or Barry's been giving them info whilst keeping her in the dark.

  13. As for Sammy, being gay is dangerous in the Middle East if you are the average joe, not if you are the scion of a wealthy tyrannical family that loves and protects you. As long as he is discrete, there will be gossip, but no one would dare do or say anything to him.

I think there has been at least one rumour that something nasty has happen to a high ranking person who was suspected of being gay but I can't remember where or under what circumstances. However, Sammy probably isn't facing prison, flogging, execution etc. Especially because he does have "escape or get told to go back to the US" as an option if/when things get uncomfortable. However its still not going to be the same as if he was in California.

I think this has potential, but I agree it went with some lazy writing to a degree. Hopefully that's just pilotitis and they'll go off in some unexpected directions after this.

This fascinates me as well.  How do you know better then allow yourself to cosign something so heinous?  Is it only the ability to live better than 99% of people on earth?  Or maybe they think they can influence things for the better?

Well some of them did have family links to countries in the Middle East so that helps. For others I guess this quote from a fictional series where a couple of women did the same thing applies "she said egalitarians have no problem adjusting to aristocracies as long as they get to be the aristocrats." I've been to a couple of places in the middle east where I was in business and tourist sectors and I could see it being easy to think "this isn't so bad" long term. I suppose some of them also fell very much in love with the "private" person.

  14. I would hope that in the event of Kody's sudden death that he has provided for all his families (note not for "everyone in his family") regardless of legal status. His non Mariah children should at least have a claim on his estate if not legally set down and the other wives would have/be wade down by the houses and the debts which are in their names only. I can't imagine what hell it would be to wade through the legal issues even if he has given medical decisions over to all his wives in committee. It's hard enough if its just one spouse and her kids that disagree, let alone their arrangements.  I suspect its only Meri who has the *legal* right to make those decisions, though I could be very wrong. Does anyone know if AUB having a fair few "mainstream" polygamists has any rules or guidelines for these situations?

You can create "as official as possible" extra martial relationships with everyone signing contracts and agreements at a lawyers office, as was/still is often the case for long term same sex couples with kids who couldn't be acknowledged by the government, but it costs a lot of money, which Kody might not have been willing to spend.

Didn't Kody kiss Sobbin when they were dating?

Yes *supposedly* she was the first wife/courtee who he'd ever kissed before they were married. Christine was shown as especially upset because she was heavily pregnant/in labor during that phase and she generally seems to be the one that takes their faith most seriously. Not only was Robyn a late addition after 16 years she also kissed (at least) Kody before they were married, picked a wedding dress with him against Brown tradition and showed up just in time for the TV cameras so there wasn't very long to get used to her before the show. I' d seriously like to know if that "Meri pushed Kody on to Robyn (possibly to gain an ally) " is true.

I also wish they;d go into detail about how they're all related and related by marriage. They have admitted the Kody/Janelle/Meri connections but not Meri and Christine's ties to Robyn and Robyn's ex husband's family I think.

  15. The reason I suggested they might be hoping TLC helps them out is because they stepped in to pay and finish off the Duggar house several years ago (back when they were only doing specials). Of course that gave them a storyline for that special whereas it would be a much more dramatic storyline for the Browns to have to move back to Lehi and learn to live together again, if TLC hasn’t pulled the plug by then anyway. And the Duggar house was probably way cheaper than whatever else the Browns have to pay off.

Or if Janelle could actually succeed at real estate.  I would expect by now she would be a presence on the realtor website with her own clients but so far she still just seems to be an assistant.

I think to be a successful realtor you have to be very dedicated to it to build up a client base, win instructions, do viewings at inconvenient times etc especially in Las Vegas. I'd guess filming and preping storylines and everything else digs into that. Not saying she couldn't do that but she probably puts the show first. Or she might just enjoy being office based and is doing a lot of the legal/admin work for the company with more flexible hours. Or she's been sucked into the reality show black hole like everyone else in the family, even though she's the only one that's ever concerned about finances.

  16. I think Robyn is by nature someone who just has to but in and have their say and relate everything to themselves. I used to do that as a kid and teen and I never realised how annoying it was for my friends and other people around me. 2nd she's really wrapped up in making her 2nd marriage work and in being the perfect polygamist and as she's been the new shiny toy she hasn't had as many of the downsides as the others so she just butts in even more. And I think she's also really conscious that she wasn't there for the last 20 years and is trying desperately to make up for that fact in her brain and for the viewers. Because seriously it has always been kind of laughable when she talks about raising the kids together and acts like the family historian.

  17. Many famous people/reality stars have started brands, some successfully and others not so successfully. Some have been really involved some have just put their names on random crap (Duck Dynasty I'm looking at you). I think if they got a large batch of sales every episode or even steady they'd have mentioned it before now and they'd have looked slightly less pathetic in the investment pitch.

  18. My guess is Mariah can share what the others have but the others can partake in what Meri and Mariah have.

Well if everyone was eating at Christine's then Janelle and her kids were eating Christine's portion as well (I think Christine used to regularly cook for everyone and Janelle didn't very much). I guess the kids would prefer to be together and eating junk rather than sitting alone with Meri eating her healthier diet food and IIRC there was some suggestion that they went to Meri's if they wanted quiet time, although I don't know how true that was. It was probably a lot easier to share resources when you had wings of one house to a wife and not 4 separate houses.

  19.

In the Jewelry Collection, the default sort mixes the expensive and the cheap pieces in a random way so a $19 piece shows up next to a $139 piece. The effect is jarring because the stuff all looks the same. Sterling silver pieces are identified if you bother to dig around for the information, but other pieces are also called silver because of the color.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It all looks much the same on the website, even if some of it is allegedly sterling silver. And the jumble in prices and styles is chaotic and tacky. Do they think people won't notice the piece next to a £20 piece is $100+ and buy it without looking closely maybe?

  20. Browsing the site it seems like there's very little difference in quality between the stuff marked $12.99 or the stuff that's near or even well over $100. Could it be they actually did think they could charge such massive mark ups and people would pay for the privilege of buying from them? And snerk, they are having a sale on the stuff that's branded as SisterWife, sorry "StrongWoman" SW.

  21. Ah Meri, with a Me, not a Mary.   A copier, and a me-tooer.  Can't let the kid go to college, no meri has to go too.  Still doing everything with the kid, not the same school, but the same experience, as far as she knows.

At least she didn’t try and turn up at Westminster. I’m not bothered about her wanting to go back to college, it was something she didn’t finish previously and I'd rather she did that than sit around planning continual upgrades to her house as she empty nests, and complains she doesn't have any more kids. Whilst I’m not sure anyone would or should hire a reality star to work with at risk kids she could potentially get another job, that’s way more worth her time than the jewellery. Meri will probably use “college” as her excuse for everything now, but Robyn’s just as batshit about trying to use MSWC as a hook to get people to do what she wants and keep herself the centre of attention. They’re as bad as each other and Janelle is living in cloud cuckoo land if she really believes her figures for the business.
