I've seen it speculated that Putin has some dirt on him outside of just business.  Now, I'm not saying that he is on tape with, say, an underage Russian prostitute, but, well, some people are saying it.  (That is how we do it these days, right?)

Yep that sword cuts both ways - we can just imply stuff and palm it off on "many people"!

I am absolutely convinced this is the case - he was caught on tape and it had to be something way worse than just sex with an underage prostitute - I assume it's something that would put him in prison.

Then, they finished up with some bullshit about how Trump says he doesn't want his supporters sitting out in the cold for his inauguration.  Oh, bullshit.  He's pre-excusing the potentially historically tiny (like his hands) inauguration day crowd with that "I'm concerned for my supporters, please don't come out if it's too cold for you" bullshit.

    God I hope it's a freak 70 degree day.

I understand that we are all fed up with the throwback racist ideas and bigotry and hate and all of it, but if someone raised in white supremacy can change the way they think by virtue of being surrounded by people who are willing to show him where he's gone wrong, there's hope for many.

I admire your selfless attempt to make the world better, and it's good to know that a racist can be unracist...icized. But the Trumpsters can't unvote. That damage can't be undone. And by the time they can vote again, they won't need us to change their minds - the dumpster fire formerly known as the United States will do that all on its own.

If we tear him apart over every little thing every day -- like poor sentence structure -- we risk the world tuning out and not hearing us anymore when it comes time to speak out against truly serious matters.

It wasn't merely poor sentence structure, but let's say it is - I don't think the world will be tuning us out because we criticized his word salad. I think he'll actually responsible for any tuning-out, along with the sneering, laughing, bombing, overthrowing, and so on. That's on his head, not ours.

  5. I had a theory early in the campaign that people were so crazy about him because they were just so damn weary of politicians and their canned speeches. And this made sense to me because who wouldn't be tired of politicians - they're like robots who can only respond the way they're programmed to respond, so if the question is "what would you do about the inner city schools" they just search their database and choose whatever talking point comes closest to the topic, like "I believe that everyone should be educated and I'll be the Education Mayor." It's boring and maddening and it feels pointless to even listen to their interviews - so I truly did get why he was popular.

But as time went by and he got nuttier and nuttier I thought ok, even if you're tired of the same-old same-old and his lunacy is vastly entertaining, even so, when it's time to vote you've got to admit the guy is crazy and choose someone else. Right? Right? (Just because you're tired of tuna sandwiches for lunch, doesn't mean you're going eat a bowl of glass shards.) But that didn't happen, and that's the part I'll never get. And now we're going to be stuck with someone who says things like this:

    Quote

"I think we ought to get on with our lives. I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly. The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what's going on.  We have speed. We have a lot of other things but I'm not sure you have the kind of security that you need. But I have not spoken with the senators and I certainly will be over a period of time."

Dementia involves a decline in cognitive functioning. I do think he shows signs, but I am not familiar enough with his previous level of functioning.   Constrained by the limits of Twitter, a lot of people have trouble being clear.  But Trump is a lot worse, as far as making it clear what he is referring to in his tweets. Like sometimes he seems to be replying to anews story, but without referencing the story, his meaning is unclear.

I should add, there are different kinds of dementia with different symptons - in my case I'm just going by personal experience. The severely limited vocabulary, the hand gestures, the weird and inappropriate angry outbursts ("such a nasty woman," imagine anyone else saying that in a presidential debate, it's unthinkable), the sort of lurching he was doing during the debates, and of course his problem with remembering what he said. (Although that could just be the usual problem liars have - that they can't remember what they lied about.) If he starts forgetting the names of common things, that'll be the clincher for me.

Honestly, I really do think he's got the beginnings (or further) of dementia.

I do too. He's absolutely deranged. He's even worse than I ever thought he could be.

Yes, so do I, and I would never say that sarcastically. But I imagine that even if his entourage knows this, they'll help hide it until after he's in office.

I already know what they're saying by their vote.

Trump mocked the disabled, called Mexicans rapists, insulted and body shamed Heidi Cruz, Alicia Machado and Megyn Kelly, spoke about his daughter as a sexual object,  called HRC a "nasty woman", said an American judge couldn't do his job because of his ancestry, insulted John McCain's military service, said vets suffering from PTSD were weak, monstrously attacked the Khan family and their son's service, bragged about sexual assault and then defended it as "locker room" talk,  praised Putin, said women who have abortions should be punished, threatened his political opponent with jail as political payback and suggested HRC would be assassinated by gun nuts if she won.

None of that was a moral deal breaker for the Trump voter -- and that's the deal breaker for millions of people like me.

Also mocked a disabled reporter and picked a fight with the Pope. I still feel like I'm dreaming, how? HOW?

You know what I'm starting to realize isn't working? "2016 blaming".

But even though intellectually I know that, come January 1, nothing about life and fate and the world has been actually reset just because the calendars on our walls have, at least they won't say 2016 anymore. At least we can distance ourselves from that horrible time, even if it's just in our heads.

Yes, I think that you hit the nail on the head there. We know bad things won't stop happening because the calendar flipped over, but it does give it some distance and the feeling of a fresh start and most importantly, hope.

  9. You do make a good point @stillshimpy.  (Oh cool, when you type someone's name a handy edit-helper-thingy comes up and bolds it for you!)

I haven't read the Trump-is-Jesus thing but someone did note on Twitter yesterday that we are being systematically desensitized to outrageous crap so that eventually, we'll just shrug when Trump starts making us wear arm bands or whatever. But I don't know which is worse: deliberate outrageous crap that they at least know is outrageous crap, or actual outrageous crap that they think is just fine and not outrageous at all. It would actually be marginally reassuring if they secretly knew that Baby Jesus Trump is a batshit crazy notion.

  10. I didn't bother to follow the link but some news source has been talking to other people on the plane and their accounts don't match up, either.

In any case she wasn't "assaulted," someone merely criticized her, and if she's going to be the "acting First Lady" she might as well get used to it. That whole no-safe-spaces-for-special-snowflakes mentality cuts both ways.

  11. He thinks he's just fine. He has lost all touch with reality - if he ever had one. He's got a tweet out now about how all the A listers are begging for tickets to the inauguration but he prefers to have the "people" there. He thinks we're actually going to believe this. Maybe he even believes it himself. It's hard to tell what's bullshit and what's just plain old delusion.

Usually I spend Christmas alone, bc my relationships with my family are difficult, this year I decided I would have dinner with my father and step-mother, now have to tolerate him gloating over this, as it will be seen as a success for the Church, like an honour.

Get out of it. Say you might be coming down with the flu or whatever excuse you have to make, or hell don't make one just say you can't make it and don't explain why. But get out of it. Life is too short.

What is advised it to completely ignore the person doing the incredibly horrible thing and instead, go to the person being shouted at, get between the two, ignore the racist, garbage human, and talk to the person being attacked about something else.

I read that too, on a handy illustration, so I went ahead and looked it up - I'm just going to link directly to their tumblr so that I don't accidentally deprive someone of artwork credit.  (Aaannnd the link code button isn't working so I'll just post the actual long link.) http://maeril.tumblr.com/post/149669302551/hi-everyone-this-is-an-illustrated-guide-i-made

The thing is, when someone acts like that, its easy to be speechless, caught off guard and not know what to say.

So true, I had a similar experience with someone I (thought I) knew forever. I stood there speechless until she finished talking and then just turned around and walked away. Later on I made a mental note of all the things I should have said so that I'd have something in the holster for next time.
