Does "The One in Massapequa" feel like a season one episode to anyone else? I don't know why, but the plot with Phoebe's boyfriend makes it feel like a throwback. Especially the scene where they're all making fun of Parker.

I see what you mean in that it kind of harked back to the one with Fisher Stevens as Phoebe's annoying psychoanalyst boyfriend.  But Rachel wasn't pregnant in S1.  😉

Why are so many TV kids unable to operate a washing machine?

Because so many real life kids are also unable to do so.  In my experience, training kids to do chores isn't as prevalent as you seem to think!

  3. Heard the sad news about Terry Jones during my drive to work this morning. Monty Python had a huge influence on my sense of humor (as you might guess from my avatar). When I started watching in high school (Sunday nights on PBS, after Masterpiece Theater), I initially didn't "get it." After an older friend explained some of the references that were flying (pun intended) over my head, I grew to love it. To this day, my close friends know that they may be bombarded with a Python reference when they least expect it. My Crunchy Frog refrigerator magnet is a prized possession.  RIP, Terry Jones. Thanks for all your wacky (and often highly literate) humor over the decades.

Was Renee Zellweger always that southern?

This reminds me of Hugh Grant talking about Renee during his Inside the Actors Studio interview.  He said that her British accent was so good that when "Texan Renee" finally came out at the wrap party, he found her "frankly, unconvincing."  Hee.

  5. A bit more here.

[Schurr] Well, it was important to me that he be Timothy Olyphant and not Raylan Givens, but the more we thought about it, the more we were like, “I want him to be at the Raylan Givens edge of his many personas.” I love that show so much, and I love that character, and I felt like he as a performer was so at home in that character, and then for the little comedy game of just casually throwing questions out and being sort of lackadaisically charming… when I asked him to do it, he said, “Am I me, or am I Raylan?” And I said, “No, you’re you, but I think I want you to be Raylan-y.” And his question was, “Full Stetson?” [Laughs] I said, “Yeah, I think ideally full Stetson.”

I found the episode engaging enough, but then I did a thought experiment on myself and tried to imagine exactly the same episode but with someone other than Charles Dance in the part. And I realized it would have totally sucked. Boy are they lucky they got him.

I am shocked at how much I like Tobias Menzies as Philip. He's come a long way from Uncle Edmure! But Charles Dance--he could play Jeffrey Dahmer and still manage to charm me.

Color me baffled.  I have never understood the appeal of Charles Dance.

  7. I enjoyed this episode a lot.  The bit with making Michelle feel needed was predictable (I cheered when Ben finally got those little braids right), but I loved Forrest's weird interaction on the "dad bench" and his emergence as a fashion guru, as well as Wade's conversations with Noah sparking the realization that Wade should go for it, sexually.

It's not the greatest series in the world, and Walton Goggins sometimes feels like he's trying too hard to be the anti-Boyd, but I like the gentle humor and the secondary characters are being fleshed out pretty nicely.  I'll keep watching.

Some sad news to report: Stan Kirsch, best known as Richie from Highlander and Monica's much-younger boyfriend in the S1 episode, "The One With the Ick Factor", has died. He was only 51.

Cause of death was suicide.  😞

Aw, that's sad.  While he was very young looking on Friends, it's interesting that he was actually a bit older than Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry, the youngest cast members.

I'm so here for this.  Premieres April 19th.

Sundays?  That will feel a little odd.  According to IMDb, the first 2 episodes air on 4/19 and the last on 6/14.

Eh, I always wished Elton had teamed up with a better lyricist.

Bernie didn’t do Lion King, that was Tim Rice with Elton.

    A significant upgrade, IMO.

I happened to watch Gone with the Wind the other day.  I'll tell you what--that movie hums along at an impressive pace.  And Vivien Leigh's beauty still almost takes my breath away.

Vivien Leigh really was stunning in GwtW.  It's too bad that her illnesses and bad styling choices aged her before her time (IMO).  I recently watched the 1948 version of Anna Karenina, filmed when Leigh was 34, and while she often looked quite lovely, there were a number of scenes (including the one from which this still is taken) where her eyes looked soooo tired.  The eye make-up did not help.

While White Christmas was not on TCM (at least, I don't think it was), it seems fitting to discuss here.  I went to a singalong showing in Chicago last week and had a hoot.  There were a number of folks in costume and/or with props.  It didn't reach Rocky Horror proportions, but people did shout out certain lines, such as "Mutual, I'm sure."  My friend and I will have to up our game for next year's event.  Sundance aired it this week with lyric subtitles, so I'll study before next year.  😉

They were both at Northwestern, I believe, and had a little improv group in Chicago before they were asked to join snl at the same time.

Their older son also attended Northwestern and played on the basketball team.  I was in Evanston a few years ago, walking to a restaurant, and saw this very tall, pale, vaguely familiar-looking man across the street, followed by a very short dark-haired woman.  Took me a moment to realize it was Brad and Julia.  I assumed they were in town to see their son.

I think there are a lot of comedians, perhaps more so in the black community but for anyone practicing the art, that will look at the riff with some sense of relief that Murphy just made it OK to go after Cosby.

It didn't feel to me like Murphy was "going after" Cosby -- it was a pretty mild, truth-based joke, IMO.  Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were much harsher at the Golden Globes almost 5 years ago.

For you youngsters, that is Brad Hall giving the Weekend Update story on the apparent demise of Buckwheat.  He's the husband of Julia Dreyfus-Hall.  I'm not sure where they met, but they were both on SNL for a season or two in the mid-80s.

You mean Julia Louis-Dreyfus, right?  I've never seen/heard her use the name Hall professionally.

I'm not sure that having 10 children with 5 different women is exactly Father of the Year material, but it's nice that they were all in the audience last night.  I thought the show struck a pretty good balance between Murphy's classic characters and newer material.  Buckwheat was my personal favorite of the evening.

My comments were about Succession and Watchmen. As HBO properties that occupy the prime Sunday @ 9 p.m. slot (the same as GOT and BLL), I'd think each of those is both known and hyped.

FWIW, I watch quite a bit of TV, but haven't seen either of those series yet.

Andre Braugher will take on the role of James Evans (the patriarch in Good Times, originally played by John Amos!) in the latest ABC special redoing Norman Lear Shows live, to air on December 18th. Florida Evans, James' wife, will be played by Viola Davis.

Thanks for the heads up, WendyCR72!  I will be setting my DVR!

The nominations on the television side are a joke.

I think there is just too much material available on TV/streaming for SAG voters to keep up with, so they gravitate to the known or what's hyped.  Seriously, Andre Braugher and Melissa Fumero in Brooklyn 99 should ALWAYS be nominated in the comedy category, but SAG voters probably aren't watching.

  17. Having trouble with the multi-quote function, so no quotations.  But:

    1. The Fallon/Rudd entrance as Trudeau and Macron did not remind me at all of the wild and crazy guys.  I assumed they were mimicking a swaggery walk from various high school movies that I haven't watched.
    2. J-Lo and the Versace dress:  hated it then, hate it now.  I was impressed when she came out wearing the same amount of coverage as men usually do, but I knew it couldn't last.

In typical HFPA fashion, they went for the big names and so while not surprising, still rollling my eyes really hard at the nominations for Big Little Lies and especially Morning Show. Morning Show is the biggest joke. The series has gotten okay to middling reviews but there was no way they weren't going to get Aniston in there.

Never forget that the HFPA consists of *90 members* whose primary qualification seems to be "international media whore."  But they throw an awards show with lots of booze, so there you go.

S2 of Big Little Lies wasn't even a joke.  It was a travesty.
