  1. If someone had posited this series of events in the hiatus, I would have said, "Nah, that wouldn't be enough to do it. It'd have to be something bigger than that." Because Oliver spent five months struggling with his feelings for Felicity, wanting to do something about them but thinking it wasn't "the right time," and if he finally decided that it was, I don't think that would be such a light decision that he could flip back on it so quickly. He would have thought through all of these possibilities; he would take steps to avoid pitfalls like losing his focus. And he would do these things not to protect himself but to protect Felicity, and what they already have. Which is why the kiss and the "don't ask me" line, while gorgeous, and while I've watched them *mumble mumble* times, still leave me puzzled and sad. It just doesn't feel right to me. It doesn't feel like the Oliver I love. The Oliver I love would probably have just been silent when she asked him to say Never; or he would have said something like, "I can't; I'm sorry." That might not seem like a huge difference to some people, but it is to me.

I get what you mean, but I'm going to give Oliver a pass on this, and not just because of the pretty, pretty gifs and other fan content I get to watch.

A tumblr blogger lays it out much more eloquently than I ever could, but I agree with jbuffyangel about Oliver's headspace regarding being the Arrow and being with Felicity and the potential direction for the season.

    Highlights:

The reason why the camera panned to Felicity, and showed Oliver’s pained expression as he watched her stand over Lyla and the baby, was because it was highlighting again that Diggle was making a choice that Oliver believes he CAN’T make.

What does Oliver want? What Oliver wants is to be Oliver Queen. That’s a radicule departure from where he was two years ago, even one year ago. He wants to be Oliver Queen now because he has reconnected with his humanity. Being Oliver Queen represents something totally different to Oliver now than it did two years ago. When Oliver came back from the Island, he was shut off. He was the Island. The entire point of Oliver’s speech in that restaurant was the moment he saw Felicity Smoak, he saw a person…he felt the flicker of that humanity again. It’s why he smiled. It’s why for a brief moment, we got to meet Oliver Queen. The REAL Oliver Queen. Not the vigilante, not The Arrow. Oliver.

He’s terrified of what being Oliver Queen could result in. He’s terrified that if he allows himself to BE Oliver Queen, if he tries to build that life, it could all fall apart. It’s fear. Oliver believes if he’s not 100% focused on life as The Arrow, he risks everything. Not only could people of Starling die, but Felicity could die as well. Being The Arrow protects her, even if it means he can’t be with her. Oliver believes his own worse enemy is OLIVER. By loving Felicity, Oliver fears he will destroy her and he cannot survive that. So rather than try to have everything, Oliver makes the choice to have nothing. He makes the choice to be The Arrow and this is CRUCIAL…because Oliver is going to be shutting down again. He’s going to be losing his humanity again. He’s at risk for losing his soul…again.

Sara’s death changes EVERYTHING. Diggle will rejoin the team and SHOW Oliver how you can have both. It is possible to BE both. To serve the mission and build a life for yourself. That if he allows himself to love Felicity, Oliver’s fears will NOT be realized. He won’t destroy Felicity. He won’t lose her. He’ll become everything he’s suppose to be. To become The Green Arrow, Oliver needs to be a man AND a weapon. He cannot be a man without his love for Felicity. Not anymore. That’s what the premiere was stating. His entire universe has changed. His humanity is totally and completely dependent on his love for this one woman.

I think Oliver was slowly opening up to the possibility of being both Oliver Queen and The Arrow, and he took his first steps towards this and it literally blew up in his face. The Kiss, IMO, is Oliver giving himself a moment to still be Oliver Queen, before retreating back into Vigilante and the Mission.

I like that he did this, as unfair as it could be to Felicity, because selfishness and need are very human and at this point Oliver is consciously deciding to switch off his humanity again.

She writes some interesting stuff, (which I think has been linked here before) and even has a positive spin on the whole BC=LL situation, which I can't fully support, because I don't think the acting skills are there and i'm burned out by Laurel Lance.

  2. Listen I think there were like, hundreds of ways for me to feel Oliver on not being together with Felicity, they went with literally the exact same fucking speech he has been giving since S1 E1. And while I am happy Felicity was as over it as the rest of us, it's still lazy, contrived and stupid crutch, and really really really makes me dislike Oliver. I can't root for someone this stupid, this emotionally *crippled*, much less hope my beloved Felicity ends up with him.

I'm giving Oliver a pass on this, but it has an expiry date. I appreciate it was more about "I have a mission…can't be distracted" than "no-one is safe with me"[/paraphrase].

I'm getting a sense that Oliver feels the need to atone for what he has done in the past, he doesn't deserve to be happy, and he was never truly coming back from the "island", etc.

I think rather than dangling "maybes" in front of Felicity, he was giving himself 1 last moment of allowing himself to be "Oliver Queen", before full-on retreating (regressing) back to Arrow/Mission mode.

Not sure how to explain this clearly but I think, for Oliver, every time he drops his guard a bit, or things are going OK, he gets a big slap in the face. I got this feeling in Heir to the Demon (How cute and happy was Oliver with his "Fe-li-ci-ty" before she revealed the Thea-Daddy bombshell?) and I get it again now. If he compartmentalises and focuses on the mission, it is better for him but, he needed to be open with Felicity first.

It could be taken as not fair to Felicity [Oliver dangling a "maybe" in front of her], but don't really agree. I think she deserves to be told by Oliver, in his own Oliver way, that he loves her, suspecting and knowing are 2 different things. If Oliver continuously keeps drawing Felicity in then pushing her away, I may have to review my stance. He is only human and can't stay on mission indefinitely, so I'm sure it will happen again, but they can only go so far with this.

I'm hoping it is because the writers are going back to the story they wanted to tell from the beginning but putting Felicity in the role they originally wanted for Laurel and not that the writers just don't have any new ideas about how to write a romance.

I agree with you @Orion, and so far there is no tainted history between Felicity and Oliver that dooms the relationship from the start. But I want more than Laurel's disused storyline for Oliver & Felicity.

A great start is how open and honest Oliver is being with Felicity

    • Volunteered information about the 5 years away, and in an emotionally honest way
    • Told her that he had to face his biggest fear, and that fear was being Oliver Queen
    • The "Love" declaration
    • The flirting (I know we can't do that much now without the danger of Oliver being seen as a manipulative prick but it was cute while it was allowed even if I'm not 100% sure on the wording of the Bed/Floor exchange)

I hope they keep the level of honest communication up. Also I want to see some of it go in the opposite direction, from Felicity to Oliver.

  3. Because she has always been a bit of an audience substitute and because Felicity's background has been kept back for so long, I think that there have been certain character traits, especially in fan fiction, that people associate with Felicity they may be disabused. So now that they are finally fleshing out her backstory things may not mesh well with what is shown and what is in our heads. Exhibit A: Felicity's apartment.

Considering that start of season 1 Laurel, as female lead and love interest, had her own sets, a friend/confidant, family and backstory fleshed out. I want to see the some of the same for Felicity. I'm really excited to be getting some of these things soon. What I'm not keen on seeing is the conflict/URST between Oliver and Felicity caused by a love triangle,

this is why I'm not that interested in Ray Palmer

or any other artificial reason for them to be kept apart. I've never minded the "because of the life that I lead" excuse because I see that more about Oliver's mental state and ability to be a committed partner, than it's too dangerous for Oliver to be with Felicity.

I've always viewed Season 2 as Felicity = Love Interest, so I think they can get it right. The 1st half of the season 2 was TV perfection IMO, but @dancingnancy is right, it hard to trust the writers fully, because we have seen them get some thing so so wrong and the 2nd half really slumped. But the finale got it oh so right. Letting Felicity be instrumental in taking down Slade was fantastic because they managed, to turn in it  head, the comic trope of Love Interest = DiD.

@statsgirl I hate the moonlighting curse excuse.

  4. All of the Above

+ Oliver and Thea acting like siblings (Teasing, bickering and when they support each other - I guess more S1)

+ Olicity Fan gifs because every shot is beautiful, the acting is nuanced, the looks smouldering, all which make the gifs look awesome (and some are so funny)

+ Olicity Theme music, which I'm sure reoccured in the season, but especially in the finale

+ When Team arrow make jokes or tease each other

+ John Diggle's reactions, (2 Favourite: Walking off on Oliver's lame "ran out of sports bottles", because he couldn't anymore & his shit-eating grin when he got into the elevator with Blood's Bodyguard)

    + Felicity & John BrOTP

+ Moira with her "beautiful baby boy", actually all of Susanna's scenes that woman was amazing and make Moira into a very layered, complex character

+ Thea's growth and her "no you're not" response to Roy breaking up with her.

  5. Yes I'd seen something somewhere about Paul saying he had been doing a lot of filming with Katrina and KC, and I don't know what's up with that. Like 10Eleven12 says, it mainly makes me wondering what in the world is up with Sara. I really can't imagine any other possible reason Nyssa would be dealing with Quentin and Laurel.

I hope they aren't turning Sara into a DID. But I worry that is the reason for these types of scenes.

Nyssa and Quentin scenes will be gold…

  6. I always though the previous episode, 2.22 where Sarah was all conflicted and depressed, was her struggling with the decision to go back to The League. The conclusion to the episode showed she could still be heroic and she had made peace with the decision.

I think the Lances' acceptance was jarring, they honestly couldn't be OK about she leaving after they just got her back again.

  7. The thing about Tommy was I thought he had WAY more chemistry with Thea than Laurel, so I couldn't even buy into his relationship for Laurel fully (Though I did appreciate it keeping her away form Oliver). Willa really sold Thea crushing on Tommy, and how sad she was he was talking about Laurel.

Of course hindsight is incesty. But I agree it would have been great to see the half-sibling reveal with an alive Tommy. Even though I understand why they killed off the character (and don't necessarily disagree with the reasoning), if they had kept Tommy and killed off Laurel….the possibilities.

Lance could gain back a daughter (Sarah) but at the cost of another.

Oliver could still instigate his no killing mantra

Tommy could have the alcohol related "crucible", plus he had a lot of reasons to drink (His father, Laurel, Oliver, Thea)

    Thea and Tommy as siblings

hmmm….I wonder if I could find a fanfic

I hope we see Flashback Tommy interact with more people than just Malcolm in episode 2(?)

  8. I'm excited too…Mainly because I love Barrowman's enthusiasm. Honestly I could take or leave Malcolm in season 1 and was not that excited about the "Resurrection" last season. But the interview from the up fronts built my enthusiasm for Season 3, also

    Tommy Flashback!!

    .

I'm really interested in in seeing the dynamic between Thea and her Bio-Daddy.

  9. [Delurk] Great Oliver x Felicity video…a little old but make me smile
