  1. Dear Olympic Channel,

Thank you for showing the gymnastics world cup events. Seriously, thank you. It's great to see these events, which you're showing even when there aren't any Americans competing. So really, kudos and thank you.

But please, for the love of all that is holy, hire someone to replace the British guy doing the commentating on these events. He doesn't appear to know anything about gymnastics, and consistently says insulting things about the gymnasts. Ellie Black was "disappointing" on the vault at the Paris World Cup? She won a freaking silver medal! Saying that Juliette Bossu would be happy to see Ellie Downie fall off the bars? How insulting! And imagine, Oksana Chusovitina's been on the world stage all the way back to Athens in 2004! Try Barcelona in 1992, you idiot!

    Sincerely,

    A Gymnastics Fan

  2. Really enjoyed it and screamed out loud when Hillary came off the elevator. And "Bring it on! Hashtag Dan Quayle" - yes!! The scene in Phil's was rather painful, though - I don't know if that's what they filmed first (maybe so since that's when the audience applauded Murphy's appearance), but everyone seemed a bit stiff. It got better as the episode went on, though. Grant Shaud was great as Miles - no stiffness there, and it's great to see him back in competent executive producer mode.

I'm really excited about Avery. He's clearly grown up very well, is super smart, and is going to be a good debater for Murphy. The actor also very plausibly looks like he could be Candice Bergen's son - excellent casting.

  3. Given that the 1988 pilot started with the music of "Respect," I wonder if the first episode next week will also start with that song (if CBS is willing to pay the royalties again). That would be a nice tribute as well. Similar to how the last episode in 1998 also ended with Murphy singing "Natural Woman" like in the pilot to bring it full circle.

I feel like all of this moot, because what I always come back to is that the situation had been settled and was over with. When Ramos made the call about the illegal coaching, Serena went up to him, denied it, said her piece and he said okay. Obviously he wasn't going to take the call back and she knew that. She said her piece again during the change over and again, it was settled.

But there wouldn't have been anything to "settle" if the bad call hadn't been made in the first place. I agree that Serena's reaction was OTT but Ramos had a major (and IMO, the initial) role in yesterday's mess.

  5. I don't think there's any dispute that Serena needs to work on her temper and reactions to adverse situations, and especially needs to learn how to let things go and regain focus. BUT, in this particular situation, I keep coming back to the legitimacy (or lack thereof) of the citation for the coaching violation, which set off the entire chain of events.

It doesn't appear at all that, even if Patrick M was intending to help her and send suggestions with the gesture he made, that it meant anything to Serena, that she received the information, or that she behaved differently as a result of his hand signal. From her vantage point far across the court, and given the fact that he was sitting in the second row and that the gesture he made was rather minor, even when shown in close up on tv, it's plausible that she really did think that it was just a thumbs up. Not to mention that there's serious doubt as to whether she even saw it in the first place. It's not like she looked over to him, he gestured, she nodded, and then obviously moved closer to the net or whatever it was he was suggesting.

Given all of these doubts, and that it was not at all approaching some of the more egregious examples of sideline coaching that are not called out, I think it was ridiculous for Ramos to issue the warning for coaching. Serena overreacted by suggesting that it was an implication that she was cheating, but frankly I agree with her outrage on the call being made in the first place. If he hadn't made that bad call, then even if she had still smashed her racket later (which, to be fair, she does on the regular), she would have gotten the warning that she's used to getting, but would have gotten her frustration out and likely would have calmed down.

Overall, though, I hope that Osaka absolutely kills it at the Australian Open and wins that one too, just to re-enforce that she was on fire here and deserved the win no matter what.

I thought margarhita pizza had white sauce, fresh tomato, and basil? Maybe it's a regional name thing. In New Haven, home of the best pizza in the U.S., you can order it as "fresh tomato and Basil pizza" and either white or red.

A traditional pizza margherita that you would find in Italy is what was presented on the show - tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil.

  7. I think I've figured out what bugs me about the competition format on this show. There's not a good reasonably standard definition as to what makes a good "crafter" - as opposed to, for example, a baker (as in GBBO) or fashion designer (as in Project Runway). Yes, bakers and fashion designers have their strengths and weaknesses, but any good baker should be able to make a standard repertoire of breads, pastries, desserts, and so on. Similarly, a fashion designer may choose to specialize in, say, women's wedding dresses, but anyone with good training and creativity should also be able to make a suit.

"Crafting" is just too large a category, covering everything from making tiny stud earrings to painting giant wall murals, from wood working to making party decorations. Also it's not always clear what the standard is meant to be - are they supposed to be producing something that could justifiably be sold for money? To just make the neighbor's kids happy? I think I'd prefer the show more if they took advantage of Nick Offerman's expertise in woodworking, and had a show focused on that.

  8. Could Kate possibly get through a single episode without exclaiming, "This is a disaster! It's a disaster." If she doesn't say it, Stacey does. It's so tiresome. I get that the producers are probably asking the bakers to comment on how it's going, but hearing the same lament over and over is too much.

Not a fan also of the show setting challenges that are inappropriate for the temperature and weather conditions. If they are not willing to do better climate control in the tent, then they should be willing to adapt the challenges to the conditions - asking the bakers to work over hot oil on such a hot day seems highly unnecessary.

And the broken knife was heartbreaking (I gasped).

As soon as I saw that he was only making one of them, I knew that it would break. If you're going to make something that fragile that is absolutely integral to your design, you've got to make multiples of them.

All in all, I'm pleased to see that the format and style of the show is virtually unchanged. The show was never supposed to be about the hosts anyway, and Noel and Sandi seem unobtrusive at least, with Noel being quite pleasant and witty. I think he could actually be quite dashingly handsome if it weren't for the Goth hair look.

The clutch bag idea was just wrong from the start. First of all, it's so small that even if it were perfectly executed, it would never be as impressive as some of the larger designs. Plus that black frosting, which also overwhelmed the cake when it was cut, was just entirely unappetizing.

  11. "Murphy Brown" is listed on CBS All Access, but it does not include the old episodes, only a couple of trailers and articles about the upcoming season. Presumably the new episodes will eventually be listed there as they are aired. Right now Antenna TV seems to be the only option for seeing the episodes from seasons 2-10.

  12. Yes, Robert's door was a bit boring, but his goose was great and the whole thing looked professional, if a bit straight out of Martha Stewart. Joanna's door was a bunch of balloons strung together, paper four leaf clovers that kindergarteners could have cut out, and a felt leprechaun that would be right at home in any 3rd grade classroom. I thought it was ridiculous that Robert was sent home, and not Joanna.

Khiem's door was perhaps more visually impressive, but in this instance I'm ok with them awarding the win to Amber because Halloween is a very obvious choice for a holiday associated with porch decorations, whereas Valentine's Day is not. Also, while the tree branch effect on Khiem's door was cool, the addition of the fog machine is not exactly original for Halloween, and isn't much of a "craft," anyway. Amber's porch had decorations at all different scales, and while I think the emphasis on the use of the mannequin hands and "diversity" was overblown, it was an interesting addition to the typical Valentine's hearts and chocolates.

However, from her full recipe, the key for the method seems to be chilling the squares in the fridge after almost every step and she didn't allow them enough time for that.

This seems really unfair to the bakers to set a technical challenge where "Mary Berry-quality" fondant fancies are to be produced, without giving them the same amount of time that Mary Berry has to make them. No wonder all of the fancies looked deficient - usually at least one person hits the mark on the technical challenge, but for all 3 in the final to not work it out suggests that the challenge itself was not set properly.

Along with creativity, they also like to see some growth and the ability to absorb constructive criticism.

Personality and possible smug-ness aside, this is was what irked me most about Brendan. Whenever the judges criticized his bakes, you could see in his face and demeanor that he didn't entirely believe what they were saying to him. Also, although he certainly produced consistent high-quality bakes, what he was producing was consistent, high-quality versions of classic recipes, with barely any creativity added. That's fine for someone who wants to work in a run-of-the-mill bakery on a small town high street, but it's clear that on this show they want to see someone who can bring a new flair and take on baking, while still producing delicious and visually impressive baked goods.

  14. I think the wolf turn derives its name from the wolf jump (once the gymnast starts turning, the position is similar to that achieved in the jump), which itself seems to have derived its name from the comparison to the sheep jump.

The only wolf turn that made me go "wow, that was amazing" was Simone's at Classic this year. Fast and absolutely perfectly balanced. And the unintended comedy of last year's "Wolfkino" by Jordan Chiles was such a gift. But those two amazing examples do not justify needing to sit through countless ugly ones.

  15. The wolf turn has only become popular in recent years because it is given a high level of difficulty (and thus, points) in the current Code of Points. If it were de-valued, the problem would solve itself as fewer gymnasts would feel compelled to do it. At minimum, though, there should be a rule prohibiting doing two of them in a row, like in McCusker's routine with the triple immediately followed by the double turn.

  16. Quote

Even regular news organizations have to report on the tweets since he's making policy decisions on twitter. It would be great if everyone ignored them, but it's a catch-22 imo.

Yes, but the media doesn't have to mindlessly relay every tweet he puts out. They should report on the ones that are at least vaguely policy-related, but don't need to amplify the ones where he's just insulting people and name-calling. And for the ones where he's outright lying, make it absolutely clear that what he's saying has no basis in reality.

Did they model Niles on Frasier, on Jim Dial? I'm watching the first season of Murphy Brown, and he reminds me of Niles.

I don't think so, or at least it wasn't a conscious decision.

On "Frasier," the casting agents saw how much David Hyde Pierce looked like a young Kelsey Grammer, and they wanted Niles to be almost identical to Frasier since the conceit of the show was to have the two sons who were complete opposites of the blue-collar father. (This is my recollection from reading the Frasier show book about 20 years ago.)

Is Ragan's ankle still sore from World's? That is a bit worrying, it was almost 10 months ago??

On the Olympic Channel broadcast they said that doctors had told Ragan she should have surgery (torn ligaments, etc.) but she decided against it and preferred to just rehab it. So, it's still swollen and needs heavy wrapping. I really hope she doesn't come to regret the decision not to go through with surgery, especially since there's still 2 whole years before the Olympics, which should give her enough time to recover.

Very sorry for Ragan--NBC didn't  show her floor or vault but since she wasn't in the top ten, I'm assuming those did not go well.

They showed Ragan's vault - it was a decent double twisting Yurchenko. She pulled out of floor, presumably to rest her ankle.

I know my Boitano hero worship is showing, but he drew people in not because he played to them, but because he was just simply fantastic.  Watching him in person, you couldn’t help but marvel at his power and technique and speed.  I swear he could cover the length of the ice with one push of his skate and still be faster than anyone else.  His clean lines, his height on jumps that flowed with the program - no one seems to be able to do that anymore.

And that spread eagle. God, that spread eagle.

  21. Sure - I didn't mean that Edna Mode should have filled *this* movie. But I'd love to see Edna at Fashion Week, to see her dealing with Anna Wintour, and to learn more about how she develops her suits for the supers.
