  1. Dare I hope that the absence of Al Trautwig from the American Cup (an event he has typically commentated on) means he won't be involved in NBC gymnastics coverage anymore? Pretty please?

  2. I honestly couldn't really care who wins hockey, but the OAR team should be stripped of their gold medals for singing the Russian anthem while the Olympic anthem was playing. The IOC told them they were not allowed to make any political statements or protests of the ban. How is that not a protest?

  3. I'm fine with Zagitova winning over Medvedeva. Zagitova truly embodies the classical, balletic style, while also showing technical mastery of the jumps. The only aspect that rubs me the wrong way is the backloading. She's well within the rules to do so, but it makes it feel like she used a loophole to boost her score beyond what it should have been. I really don't think that the 2 min of skating at the start of her program, with no jumps, is at all equivalent to someone who does at least 2 jumps in the first two min, in terms of tiring out her legs, so it's not within the spirit of the 10% bonus rule. It also makes the program seem like two distinct halves unnaturally squished together, which should be a composition deduction. I also really, really wish that she would stop wearing her tights over her boots the way that she does, since it is extremely ugly and unflattering. Either pull the tights completely over the toe of the boot, or (better yet) tuck the tights into the boots.

But, I also think that Medvedeva's jump technique is inferior and clearly more labored, and her artistry seems to be largely limited to overly dramatic and unnecessary mimicry. Plus, her 9/11 program last year was extremely tasteless, and it's hard to get past that. So overall, I can accept Zagitova as the rightful winner.

  4. I would have had P/C in third - they were not deducted nearly enough for the lackluster performance brought on by the "wardrobe malfunction" in the short, and the "transcendent artistry" of their free dance is overrated. But at least the right 3 teams made the podium.

The Japanese lady's dress is very pretty.

The "revealed" version with the cherry blossoms is gorgeous, but I really didn't like the starting version. It looked like she had been rolling around in dirt in a pretty pink dress.

  6. Nathan won the free skate in the Olympics - hopefully that helps his confidence going forward, rather than thinking about what might have been (to be honest, I would have had a bit of an issue with someone landing on the podium with such a disastrous short program).

  7. There's a difference between having a competitive spirit and being a good competitor. Ashley Wagner, for example, no doubt has a strongly competitive spirit and personality. But (far more often than not) she's NOT a good competitor. Consistently digging yourself a hole in the short program so that you "need" to come back in the long program is not the mark of a good competitor.

  8. I'm totally distracted by the gigantic wedgie Tarasova's dress is giving her. Not to mention how ugly the dress is and how awful the music is. Then add in the mistakes they've already made with half the program left to go, and this program shouldn't even land on the podium, if there's any justice.

This, from a guy they hired specifically to provide historical and cultural background? Anyone familiar with the North Korea/Japan relationship knows that it can be quite contentious and that WWII still plays a role in the politics between the two countries.

The same guy also (at least twice, since I saw him make the same comment on two different occasions) said that the two Koreas marching together will be looked back on as an historic moment, but we don't know if it will be historic because it's the start of a thawing in relations between the two countries, or the (paraphrasing) "last time there is peace between them." It struck me as such an odd, apocalyptic tone to take, and he did it twice, so it was intentional!

Wow, we have an Olympian who was born this century.

    I feel old.

Laurie Hernandez (gymnastics) in Rio was the first U.S. Olympian born in the 2000's, and the first gold medalist (for the team event). But I would think that now, Gerard is the first to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event.

I keep hearing during the speed skating that they brought in experts from Salt Lake City to make sure the ice was hard.  Why wasn't that done at the figure skating venue?

It's the same venue (Gangneung Ice Arena). The figure skating competitions are in the morning (Korea time) and the short track speed skating races are later in the day.

Regarding the ice quality, as more of the competition goes on, it's evident that the "louder" sound of the skates scratching on the ice is there through all of the groups, not just the men, so I think it's more a result of some sort of different setup of cameras and sound equipment. I would like to give the men the benefit of the doubt that the poor performance overall in the short was because of the ice, but it doesn't seem to have affected the other events, so I'm thinking it may have had more to do with nerves from being the very first event, or something.

  12. Aly has said (paraphrasing) that speaking up and fighting for change is "more important than any gold medal." I think that's a pretty good indication that her priorities have shifted away from actively training and competing. More power to her!

At this point I think the only top gymnast from the last quad who has a realistic shot at going to Tokyo is Simone. Laurie's supposedly back in training but I don't envision that going very far at this point (I'd love for her to prove me wrong, though).
