I grew up in a home where my dad watched what he wanted to watch, and we only had one TV.  That was back in the day where Disney Channel was a premium channel, and my dad wasn't paying for that.  He did spring for HBO so I got to watch Fraggle Rock as well as whatever movie HBO was showing at 8pm.  Poltergeist, Predator and every other R rated flick dad wanted to watch.  We learned to self-censor at an early age.

Watching the Golden Girls back in the day, and I had no idea how filthy that show was.  It was only as a college student when I watched reruns that I learned how much the NBC censors allowed.

We didn't get cable until I was in middle school and local stations played reruns of ten year old shows in the daytime that used to be allowed only to air at night because it had mild violent and sexual content. Stations needed time to fill and so did bored kids!

  2. There's a Guardian article out with the headline about Gwyneth Paltrow saying she was at a low point during the pandemic "Eating bread every night". The actual quote in the article is she was drinking two cocktails every night AND Any other celebrity they would have only mentioned the drinking in the headline but bread makes her look more like her typical Goop foolishness and an object of ridicule online.

Interesting. I'm not surprised that ML would attempt to lord it over semi-regulars and newbies, etc.  but I'm a bit surprised that Lorne Greene didn't seem to resist that from happening- inasmuch as he was older and had more experience! In any case, it appears that Messrs. Greene and Landon stayed friends until Mr. Greene's death.

Pernell Roberts had just as much ego but was self centered. He left because he thought he wasnt getting enough attention. Landon was more generous. Canary said in the video ML always wrote good parts for him and was a good director. He ultimately became the main creative force in the later years much like Alan Alda on MASH. The two part episode where Little Joe marries a woman who is murdered and he goes on  revenge search for her killers was originally written by Landon for Hoss. I really believe Landon was trying to get Dan Blocker an Emmy there. If Blocker hadn't tragically died before they had a chance to make it the show could have ran into the 80s instead of ending in 1973.

  4. On the subject of both Bonanza and TV directors the late David Canary(Adam on All My Children)who joined the show in 1967 as ranchhand "Candy" Canady, two years after Pernell Roberts left said by the time he came on(the 9th season) Michael Landon was pretty much already running the show.

OTOH, I thought Jean Simmons was wonderful in her co-starring role and her singing voice was surprisingly good.

Agreed. She's so adorable in the Cuban scenes. The movie works so well. There's something about a technicolor musical take on the hard-boiled underworld (See: The "Girlhunt" sequence in THE BANDWAGON).

  6. The motive of someone's death that they saw someone commit murder and was blackmailing them. Great way to make the viewer feel sympathy for the killer while disdain at someone stupid enough to threaten a person who has already taken a life.

  7. The ultimate "Method actor in a musical" casting is Marlon Brando in GUYS AND DOLLS. Certainly was memorable. I think the reason they had that long, extensive dance number at the start of the big dice game in the sewers was because they wanted people to actually like the song "Luck Be a Lady" before Brando ruined it.

ETA: Just learned the "Crapshooters Ballet" was part of the original stage version so I amend my earlier statement by saying "Thank GOD they had that dance number so people would like "Luck be a Lady" before Brando ruined it!

  8. The Marvels should be an easier movie for them. Most origin stories are simple but Carol's history in the comics was long and complicated and turning all of it into something manageable while not involving Rogue and including Monica took some doing. Now that theyve got it out of the way they can tell a good story.

I think all this hate from fanboys really comes down to them wanting a tall, busty blonde in a black swimsuit.

  9. This video makes the point I thought about that there should've been a moment Steppenwolf absolutely beats the heroes I'm the second act. Not just defeated but trounced them to justify the decision to resurrect Superman.

Jennifer Lopez deserves better than Ben Sadsack.

And I don’t even care about Jennifer Lopez.

It's strange because when he's actually excited about something he can look energetic. Like I'm this clip from a zoom conversation with his GONE GIRL director David Fincher last month, he looks younger than he has for a while.
