  1. I'm happy to have Will back, but when will the storyline also return? I thought they'd ease up on the visual masturbation, but this episode still contained moments more suitable for a music video. Very little actually happened, and the best part was the recap of last season's finale. Reminding me of just how magnificent the show can be. Hannibal leaning in, tear falling from his eye, telling Will to wade into the stream.

Abigail, Abigail. I will certainly miss you. I would have preferred her to be on the run with Hannibal. She offered so much to the show. I loved that her teenage curiosity and candour brought out a different side to many of the adult characters. One of my favourite scenes with Abigail, was that exchange between her and Hannibal when she asked him direct questions about being a murderer. She was the first to see him.

  2. I love the show's style, but at times it felt like I was watching a music video. They really laid it on thick.

Can't say I enjoyed the episode much, but I'm believer that Hannibal really is about the long story. It's one of a few shows that I've gone back and re-watched numerous times. So I think this episode will have its place, even though my initial reaction is that it was rather dull.

  3. From the EW interview;

That was one of the big challenges in terms of how do we keep our promise [to not tell rape stories] to our audience—which is largely female—and also service the novel.

So is this true? I quite remember lots of discussion about this. Comments suggesting that the main demo is male and this is why the show got renewed.

  4. Well I'm glad Ethan's body is back, but I'm not excited about the possibility of a war storyline. Anti-technology terrorist, I can deal with. But I really hope S2 does not get bogged down in militarism. Sick of that tbh. I'm most interested in the family dynamics, and Ethan evolving. Of course the aspect of space and technology as well.

  5. I just marathoned this show on Amazon. Overall I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad it's getting a second season. I hope it can continue for a couple more.

I'm so sad that Ethan's body is gone, the actor who played him was too cute and adorable. He did a really good job acting the part as well. I didn't want him to die, but could see it coming in the last episode. I'm just happy his program is still alive, he's my favourite character. I could seriously watch a show based just on him and his half alien brother. I was so hoping things would work out, and Molly and John would end up raising them both.

Most of the other characters were also good. The science team were pretty awesome, Julie and Charlie. I thought Kern was interesting. I love Camryn Manheim, so seeing her as Sam was a plus. I was also glad and surprised to see Victor! Or Enver. I hope he's in S2, I've loved him since Dollhouse

Downsides.. well nowdays it seems many shows need to have a dozen major plot points happing all at once, so there where some plots that I didn't care for and at times the story seemed incoherent. Sparks was dull and his motivation a little unconvincing. I'm also glad that Kryger died. I didn't like Molly and John being separated for long periods, though from a writing point I understand why that was done. Yasumoto was also meh.

Odin, well executed as a villainous character who I can not stand. I really want him to get his comeuppance. As far as I'm concerned, he's a child abuser. I hated how he manipulated Ethan. It was really sinister. I also hope Julie can get some revenge/closure.

Excited for S2. I think a really interesting world has been created. At a time when Marvel and DC are dominating, it's nice to get some original works out there. It was basically an origins story, things can now go in many different ways.

  6. Well I have not seen many Batman fans express displeasure with the current portrayals of Batman. I do keep hearing that Nolan's version is the best yet. But I wasn't really talking about what I consider general fans. I was referring to Miller - who has always been very bitter and hostile towards Superman - and the contingent of Batman fans who are Miller fanboys and share his disdain for Superman. They also have a strong desire for "seriousness" and darkness. It's this mindset that is currently influencing the DC verse. I mean I love Timm, but his new project is an example of where things currently are.

ETA: I agree with your critique on things.

  7. Yeah, isn't that Lex's issue with Superman? It does feels like they took Lex's motivations and gave them to Batman. I'm no comic book expert, but certainly in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, the whole thing of Superman undermining humanity by being godlike was explored. And I've always wished they'd flesh movie!Lex out in similar fashion, rather than just have him as some crazy villain. This is why Rosenbaum's Lex is my favourite live action portrayal. There were some subtleties.

Anyway, I'm really starting to dislike Batman tbh. It seems his more bitter and miserable fans have taken control of the DC movie-verse. That final line where Batman asks if Superman bleeds, and then says he's going to, is everything I fear this film is going to be. 120 odd minutes of undermining Superman just to lift up Batman.

Maybe if this underperforms, they'll look and try to work out what went wrong. But if that happens, they'll probably come up with the wrong answer anyway.

Superman will be blamed. They don't like him, they see him as a character who needs to be fixed. I don't mind exploring alternate Supermans, like in the Justice Lords or Timm's recent plan. But recent portrayals of "proper" Superman have been very poor and unnecessarily dark.

  8. Le Blog did a What ever happened to Linda Hamilton article. The TL;DR is that immediately after T2, she married James Cameron and started a family with him. They had a rocky relationship and marriage for the rest of the 90s. Then she got $50 million from the divorce settlement so she never had to work just for money again. She probably made the decision to focus on her new family and it's quite easy to fall out of the lime light in Hollywood and it's not like she ever needed the money either.

Having her career laid out like that, really drives home how she never really was a star. Yet she was in such an iconic movie, the perception to me at least, is that she was/is.

  9. The movie Grand Prix got me hooked on Formula One back in 1966, been following ever since. All time favorite team is McLaren.

I used to watch F1 when I was younger, but lost touch. I've been following again since last year. I really don't recall so much drama! I'm loving it though.

  10. I absolutely love Amanda Waller. She's one of my favourite characters in the DC verse. For me, C. C. H. Pounder's voice work in the animated movies is the best. She's the perfect embodiment of Amanda.

I do not like Viola. I'm not happy with the casting at all, it's very disappointing. She does not work as Amanda. I've seen her in How To get Away, and she's terrible.

I would have preferred Aisha Hinds, she is a better fit and has the better voice. Or an unknown.

I also question how much focus Amanda will get in this bloated cast. I would like her to get a good chunk of time and development, this is her squad. The story could open lines to various other Government projects, which could appear elsewhere in the franchise. But I have a feeling she'll play a bit part. Just bark orders and leave type of thing.

  11. It's not that she's too pretty, she's too fresh faced imo.

Has Linda Hamilton ever been invited back to this franchise? For me, she was always the lead. It's odd how she's been sidelined, it's not like she's busy. It seems that Hollywood thinks it's all about Arnie and the Terminators, but Terminator should have been like Sigourney leading the Aliens movies. This was Linda's franchise. Yes the second instalment moved towards John, but still she held it all together. Since she was discarded by leukemia, and there have been constant attempts to have John as the lead, the franchise has faltered. I think many people loved the mother/son dynamic, and Sarah's arch where she evolved into the action hero lead.

I never watched the tv show, but I've read that it's quite good in these areas.

I still hope we'll get a Linda instalment. Something set in the future, she's been living off grid. And I don't care if Edward Furlong is a bloated junkie. Work that into the script. He's still a better actor than all the pretty faces they've cast since.

  12. I had to watch the trailer twice to check if Superman was indeed the guy in the black coat. I'm still not sure.

I love Timm's work, but I am tired of this attempt to turn Superman into a dark moody anti-hero type character. I am tired of the anti-hero full stop. Yes I know there are other incarnations of Superman where he goes awry, but still, I am tired. There is this constant insinuation and deriding that the classic hero is not good enough anymore, that Superman is not "interesting" enough. And I just don't agree with that. Plus I see as Superman is pushed further into anti-hero territory, Batman who is the natural anti-hero, must go even further into the dark abyss to balance this out.

Having said all that, I will still watch! And probably enjoy, as Timm's work is always good, and I am a completist when it comes to DC video movies.

  13. I was shocked when Ava shot Boyd, but I've been suspecting that the ultimate face off for Raylan is really between him and Rachel/Vasquez. So this may bring that about. People becoming unlikely allies, and previous allies becoming foes, has been a theme, so I'm not surprised Boyd and Raylan find themselves possibly needing to work together. It may even be Tim who actually takes out Raylan. The writers could be doing another bluff with Boon.

When it comes to Raylan and Boyd, I always think of that scene in the last episode of S1. Where when in the thick of it, they ended up on the same side, and at the end Boyd said Raylan is his only real friend. It set the tone to their relationship for the rest of the show, so I've suspected the writers will revisit that dynamic.

Now, I could be completely wrong, and this will sound farfetched, but I also suspect that Lorretta and Boon may become the new outlaw couple of Harlan. Just as Ava shoots Boyd, and ends an era, something happens that creates a new one with those two.

  14. What I really didn't like about the Stamper and Rachel storyline, is that they built Rachel up, just to kill her off. When they started showing her life; living in that house, helping the girl get her papers, working, getting her new identity etc.. I knew she was dead. She was being portrayed as sympathetic and with hope for her future, so of course the show was going to take that away for "dramatic" effect. This is what felt exploitative, the way they dragged out her death was unnecessary. From the point where she got into the van, I forwarded through the other scenes. It felt to indulgent. The whole Doug arc was such a bore.

I don't get Remy and Jackie, I don't see them as this awesome lovestruck couple. I didn't even realise things were that serious until this season.

Frank and Claire. I don't believe Claire has grown a conscience, she's just not happy with her position in the relationship. She does not have the power she thought she would have. The show was hinting at her running for President.

I thought this season was a bit preachy on some issues, and taking a political bias. Which I didn't like, but now that Frank is in the White House, I guess that can't be avoided.

That artwork by the monks was gorgeous!

  15. Choo Choo. Yes he provides some comedy, but it doesn't ring true that a supposed organised criminal gang, would associate with someone so "challenged" and who is a major liability. Both Ty and that other guy, can't stand him. They mock him and think he's stupid. So then why have they involved him in their operation? Choo Choo's involvement seems really out of place to me.

Ava and Raylon. I agree with others, I think she's desperate and was maybe looking to get Raylan invested in her wellbeing. She kissed him right after she accused him of only caring about the case. From her expression at the end, she did not want Raylan to stay, so I don't think this relationship is back on. Rather the stint in prison was a pivotal moment for her, and she's now looking to survive.

  16. That scene where Boyd asked Raylan if having a child would change someone. It seemed something was being hinted. Especially with the way the camera settled on Raylan's face afterwards. My take, it's saying Raylan won't be changed. That having a child doesn't make him want to settle down, as it should and he's struggling with that without really understanding. He's still being reckless with his life, like the way he was quick to talk about using his gun on Boyd.

When Boyd said he'd learned not to argue with himself, that also seemed like a dig at Raylan. I like that Boyd recognises Raylan is troubled and reckless.

There is a foreboding around Raylan imo. He may not make it to the end. Boyd's comment about Raylan not being around much longer could also be another hint. Of course it could mean his moving to Florida, or after seeing how eager to go to the draw Raylan still is, a comment about his time on earth. It would tie in with how Boyd sees Harlan dying, he's perceptive.

  17. I don't see what's wrong with Batman '66. I don't agree with the derision that the show gets. Gotham moves closer to a dull standard crime procedural when it shifts to Gordon and co. The recent episode is an example of that. Outside of Fish's scenes, it's like L&O. I'm not saying it shouldn't be serious, but it could do with having a stronger stylistic and fantasy tone. I'm trying to think of an example. Hannibal has a stylistic tone, it uses strong visual features and elements, yet it is very serious. I'm thinking of Tim Burton, not only his style, but the fact that he embraces surreal element, and plays that straight, rather than trying to inject seriousness by being "realistic". Which I'm not a fan of, but this is what lots of comic fans argue for, and what the Batman films have done.
