I haven’t finished the episode but I just had to post about Paris from Florida. What an incredible young lady. This is a young lady who has truly struggled... growing up in a gang/drug infested neighborhood full of poverty and violence. Losing her mother at 13. Truly working at bettering her life and the life of her young daughter.

I loved the profile on Paris followed by Daphne from UCLA who said she went through a dark time for a couple months when she didn’t make the dance team!  And then going on about wanting to stand on her own.

One girl grew up in a terrible neighborhood with a tragic family story, and the other didn’t make the dance team her first time trying out. What a difference in the difficulties in their lives!  I know it wasn’t intentional but it really undercut how incredibly privileged the UCLA girl’s life has been.  Maybe this is why people are responding poorly to her.

Note to producers: you don’t have to show how everyone has had to overcome difficulty - especially when a girl has lived a life of (extreme) privilege. But overall I like the profiles of specific girls and where they come from, because it really informs their journeys.

I actually really appreciated Victoria’s profile. She just owned that she loved dance, had many opportunities but wanted to dance for the DCC. None of that sobstory “I’m dancing for my dead dog” nonsense.

  2. Although I didn’t necessarily agree with Kalyssa and Alexandria (and Milan) leaving before the end of season, (and I’m gutted that Robin and Maggie left before making the triangle) but I wonder if all the additional commitments might be one huge motivating factor?

Case in point: the fact that there is now a holiday show and the girls have to clear their Friday and Saturday evenings to do a kick line around a Christmas tree at The Star.

It’s one thing to be burning the candle at both ends during training camp, but is it realistic to continue that schedule through the fall and Christmas?  I think Kelly even mentioned November being the busiest month they’ve ever had on a recent podcast.

Maybe the “attrition” that Kelly mentioned is due to the larger time commitments that the impose on the DCC.

Anyway - I just found that particular segment to stand out in the first episode. It really seems like they want to capitalize on the promotion of the DCC, but maybe it’s at the expense of burning through the rookies and veterans at a much quicker pace.

I’m ashamed to admit this, but during the freestyle round, when Kelly or Judy gasped,  “She almost hit Victoria in the face!”, I muttered, “Darn!”

I thought this part was strange - it looked more like Victoria’s lack of spatial awareness made her dance into someone’s pirouettes.  Not the other way around.

  4. I feel bad for Brennan but there’s something about her - particularly her facials and mugging - that I just don’t enjoy. I don’t find it cute or flirty.. I find it awkward and cheesy.  I’m sure she’ll make it this season and will be heavily featured on the show but I’m sadly rooting for others.

Also we had the whole Christina 5 years trying out storyline last season. And I was already tired of it then!

  5. Is this basically confirmation that Maddie has made the triangle with Kashara and Lacey?  And that Khalyn is behind the triangle in Robins old spot?  Seems like it!

Edited to add: looks like Gina moved up too!

Kash, Kaylan, Tasha, Lacey, Tess, Gina, Lexie, Lauren, Madeline, Kelli, Heather and Amy.

This list of girls seems like an obvious, albeit safe selection for Showgroup - no real surprises in there, but not the most exciting group either, to be honest.  Last year I liked that there were a couple of unexpected additions, particularly Stephanie and even Tasha.  If these are the vets from this year's show group, it seems a bit ho-hum bland.

I was really expecting to see more second year vets: Tara, Rachel, Molly, etc.  I was honestly even expecting to see Savannah in there, just for her red hair.  But thank God, no Christina, that would have been the wrong kind of surprise!!  Lexie is really the only exciting new addition to the group, imho.

I wonder what Rookies made it. Hoping that those girls will be the spice to an otherwise oatmeal Showgroup.

I'm really going to miss Robin and Cersten!

PS - Edited to add: Just realized that this year all of the 1st and 2nd Group Leaders are in Showgroup.  There's usually a couple people who don't make show group even if they are GL's... Bess, Angela, Danielle (?)... Has this ever happened before?

  7. I’m going to play Devils Advocate here. Do you think it’s possible the show has given everyone a better idea of the dance background you need in order to make it on the team, and therefore fewer casual dancers try out?

The DCC may not have as many girls try out because the show almost acts like a preliminary elimination round where girls just realize they don’t have what it takes and therefore don’t waste their time.  Or risk embarrassing themselves on national TV.

I know before I discovered DCC:MTT I assumed that any girl with basic rhythm could be a DCC and now I realize just how intense and grueling the selection process is. I also never realized you have to have high kicks and a jump split to be a sideline cheerleader. I actually think it’s CRAZY they cut beautiful dancers just because they don’t have a high kick - something they only do in one pregame dance, and honestly I’m not sure the Football fans really care if the girls are kicking to their forehead!

  8. Has anyone ever gone straight to a First Group leader like Maddie?  I haven’t paid much attention to the group leaders until the last two years, but it always seemed that a group leader was groomed - second group leaders led to becoming first group leaders.

I LOVE that Maddie was made a first group leader. She was shown teaching the sexy hips to Lauren last year, and I always imagined she was a kind and patient, friendly teacher. Goes to show you that you can’t forecast what will happen in a season. I mean - last year people were shocked when Holly wasn’t made a group leader and then look how the season turned out.. it was almost like foreshadowing (I mean imagine if Ericka and Holly had been 1GL and 2GL for group four!)

I love how @ShellyB mentioned that K+J have more tricks up their sleeves. That’s gotta be a hint about there being more to the story. Can’t WAIT for this season to start!!

Like last year, I liked Robin & Lacey being called into the office and questioned about Gina's attitude, it shows the kind of thing leaders have to deal with.

This!!  Lacey and Robin were already both of my favorites but I really feel like I got a better idea of them as leaders during these scenes. It made them more relatable. And revealed how mature both of them were in speaking about a group member. This contrasted specifically with the scenes of Jenna being questioned and demonstrated the kind of maturity and leadership Kelli and Judy were expecting.

  10. One positive about being a legacy like VK and Dayton is that they have additional motivation to be three, four or even five year girls. Considering how few girls have stayed for five years, maybe this will be the thing that brings back those long term girls?

Excited to see how their stories are told on MTT.

  11. I’m no conspiracy theorist but I feel like Brennan was taken into training camp for the television show and the narrative she brings.

The past couple seasons have featured girls who have tried out 5 times. Amy and Kendall were cut on the last episode of Season 11, and I feel like Christina would have been cut last season if not for the Vet drama.

I think having those girls who continue to try out and then subsequently see their dreams crushed reinforces the idea that the DCC is this unattainable dream and helps make the team seem more aspirational than it is. And I LOVE the DCC and Kelli and Judy, so this is not coming from a place of skepticism or resent.

If Brennan gets cut, it’s another dramatic Meghan Flaherty or Amy moment. If she makes it, it’s a redemption story that they can continue to milk throughout the season in press and on the podcasts. That’s almost why I think Christina was kept on the team - they constantly remind us that she was the girl who auditioned 5 times and finally made it.

For them I think it sounds determined and motivated. I happen to think there’s a bit of desperation in hearing that. But that’s just me!  No shade ??‍♂️

And I honestly don’t understand why Brennan would try out again when it seemed like the reason she was cut was because she wasn’t photogenic. Short of getting plastic surgery and a full makeover, I’m not sure how Brennan (or the judges) think this year will be different!  If someone talked about me like they did Brennan during cameo photos, I’d be pissed!  So I won’t feel bad if she doesn’t make it - she’s put herself up for this knowing full well the rewards and the consequences.

Shifting topics, the other training camp candidates look amazing this year!  I hope it’s a talented and competitive squad. And I actually hope they take 39 candidates this year so they can nurture a new batch of great stars.

  12. I think this is a season of rebuilding. We’ve all talked about how this seasons team was lackluster - missing power, standouts, etc. and now many of the black girls are leaving .. Jenna, Robin and Cersten, who are also three GREAT showgroup members.

If we want the team to be amazing again, I think the team needs a bloodbath - there’s no use in being loyal to vets if that means the team stays mediocre. I’d want the best 36 (or more) even if that means cutting more vets than we expect. I’d rather take the gamble of finding GREAT talent that can be developed over time than keeping a third year girl whose growth has plateaued and who isn’t a stand out. And I am glad there is more diversity in this round of finalists because I thought last season was really missing this.

  13. As everyone has mentioned, this really goes to show that we have no idea of the personal dynamics behind the scenes and cannot judge the girls or the team by the TV show and social media alone.

But I am genuinely SO HAPPY for Robin as she has always been my favorite, seemed so sweet and poised during podcast talks, and VOTY seems to confirm everything wonderful I have thought about her.

Interesting. I guess this means she probably will not be an All-Star. Boo!!!

Maybe this is what Kelly meant by “Hope?”

They may have asked Jinelle to be an All Star (and possibly a good backup to join the squad if any injuries like how Jenn K was) but this might all be dependent on whether Jinelle can renew her Visa one last time.

Maybe they “hope” the Visa will be renewed so Jinelle can remain part of the DCC family and the tears were tears of joy and appreciation when Kelli and Judy offered an All Star position to Jinelle.

Or maybe that’s just me being “hope”ful!!

  15. Savannah is one of the only redheads and I noticed she was in the Cowboys Fit ads on Instagram. So as long as she’s a relatively okay dancer, I think she will make it back.

  16. Hey guys I don’t know much about medical school in Guadalajara versus Med school in america but I think we can all agree that regardless of school ranking or MCAT scores, any school is still a heck of a lot better than taking semi-nude photos with amateur photographers to promote teeth whitening or lip plumper!  ????

  17. I remember this season when Lauren couldn’t do some sort of hip roll, they asked Maddie to get up and demonstrate. Now I know this is a random isolated scene, but I feel like they wouldn’t have asked Maddie if they didn’t think she had the right DCC style or if they didn’t trust her technique or teaching style. She has also made Showgroup both years she’s made the team. So from this completely unscientific, non insider knowledge, I’m going to guess that Maddie could be a Group Leader next year - a 2GL but a group leader no less.

  18. I am so sad to hear that Robin, Maggie (two of my three picks for Triangle) and Cersten are leaving next year.  This leaves a big void in Veterans, Showgroup, and favorites!

However, I don't think *anyone* expected Kashara to be Point, Group Leader, Showgroup AND Probowl Girl last year, at the start of the season.  I also never expected Lacey to become such a powerful, strong dancer and such a huge favorite as well!  So... who knows what next year's team will bring, and who will be stepping up.

I do strangely think Tasha and Stephanie will step up or be given more prominent roles if they end up auditioning again.  They really showed them both a lot last season on MTT, and their "growth."  Also with Stephanie's red hair color, I think she's an obvious one to move forward in the triangle and possibly be featured in the DCC:MTT Logo on iTunes.  Khalyn also seems likely to be featured, if she ends up auditioning as well, and I would love to see her get more camera time.

This is definitely the time for a middle-of-the-pack girl to push towards more visibility and start to shine.  But honestly so sad about Robin!  She was my fav!

Or maybe they moved the date for something as simple as getting a better deal on a hotel in the location where they're doing the shoot.

I kinda assumed it was so that they include it in the MTT footage... they haven't shown the Calendar shoot since Season 7 or around then?  I'm sure when they are putting together episodes, a swimsuit calendar episode would be a popular and entertaining one?

  20. Just to add on to the above, how AMAZING was the podcast with Kelli hosting?  Usually Shannon (and even Courtney) have a hard time focusing the conversation on interesting discussion, or keeping things related to DCC.  Kelli had this amazing ability to control the conversation, bring up all sorts of new and interesting facts about Robin and Jessika that made me understand and get to know them both more, and generally just made the podcast seem more elevated and polished.   (Without her, they often trail off and talk about their favorite shampoo, or food, or do old College cheers which I find odd).  Can we PLEASE have Kelli host the podcast full-time?  The dynamic between Kelli and the girls - especially Kelli and Robin - really brought something new and different to These Boots are Made for Talking that we haven't seen before.  Kelli's endless list of talents never cease to amaze me, but podcast host is definitely another one for her.  <End gushing>

Jenna brought it all on herself. She knew she could be caught when she broke the rules over and over again. In otherwords, she brought the embarrassment on herself. If she did not want the world to know what she did, she should not have went for her sixth year. As Kelli said, she should consider herself lucky she is still on the team.

Jenna may have gotten herself into all of that trouble but I also think it speaks volumes for her to stick with it throughout the season. She had her dirty laundry aired on the tv show and despite that, kept smiling throughout the season. It would have been easy to quit to save face (like Holly and Ericka). Even I will admit I was not initially a fan of Jenna’s at the beginning of the season but I think it’s commendable that she continued to do what she loved: dance, smile, have fun on the field. She was such a good dancer, always caught my attention and made it all look so effortless and cute. She’s my vote for VOTY.
