    S01.E52: May 7, 2024
Comics Mike Birbiglia, Sydnee Washington and Atsuko Okatsuka
    Premiere Date: May 8, 2024  CBS  12:37am

I’ve been a big fan of Mike Birbiglia but he strikes me as more of a storyteller than an improv-er. I’ll be interested to see how he does here. Remind me, was he ever on @?

Today May 5th is celebrated in Mexico (and Mexican restaurants outside that nation) as their National Holiday.

However, it's the anniversary of the defeat Napoleon III's French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 who were trying to establish a new Empire of Mexico [but in reality a puppet government of the French Empire]- and NOT their independence day since Mexico had been  recognized as an independent nation instead of a colony  by its former mother country of Spain in 1821.

Of course, it wasn't the end of Napoleon III's attempts in Mexico and he would install the hapless Austrian Hapsburg Archduke Maximilian and his wife the former Princess Charlotte of Belgium ( a first cousin of Vic- and the SIL of Emperor Franz-Josef and his stunning wife Sisi) as the Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota in 1864 but between them spending their monies on beautifying their Chapultepec Palace AND installing Mexico City's first street lamps, they  had too little left  to pay their soldiers. This would result in Maximilian being overthrown and executed in 1867 and Carlota fleeing to try to persuade Napoleon III, then her in-laws and finally the Pope to try to rescue Maximilian before she mentally collapsed. . .but would survive many changes in the world surrounding her Belgian castle (especially around the First World War) before her 1927 death at age 86. She'd have to travel by moat from her castle each day and when crossing it, she'd  often say to the end of her life , 'Today, we're sailing to Mexico!'

Something to ponder  over tequilas and guacamole quesadillas . . .

I almost didn't read your whole post because I was fully expecting it to end with condiment shipments and sinko-de-mayo.  So thanks for not going there!

A PVR is a recorder, SNL is Saturday Night Live -- they record Saturday Night Live for their daughter.

Lol, PVR is one of those acronyms that wasn’t around for very long, IME (in my experience). Personal Video Recorder?  People might be more familiar with DVR or even “tape”.

But SNL has been around since the mid-70s, FWIW. (Sorry, for what it’s worth.)

  4. I’ve had a few escape artist cats over the years. One figured out a path to the roof, which drove the neighborhood birds crazy. Another went missing for several weeks. I only found him when I saw a “found” poster for an “older kitten”. (He was several years old at the time.) He was definitely none the worse for wear.

I’m lucky that my current cats have no interest in the great outdoors. I could probably leave the front door wide open all day and they’d be hiding from it.

I love when showrunners know going in it's their last season, so they can take the time to lead up to something that feels like a proper ending.  We'll see if they manage to send the Conners off in a satisfying way.

Hey, maybe they’ll win the lottery!

Ghosts is better than Abbott Elementary.

In other news, water is wet. Sorry, I try to control my snark because I respect that a lot of people really love this show, but for me it’s more of a filler and I tend to cringe at things that others bring up as their favorite moments. Whew, got that off my chest!  Off to watch Ghosts now.

  7. I’ve always liked this show just fine, but I was surprised at how silly happy I was when Deborah killed it on the latenight show.

Now I don't feel so bad for having to google some abbreviations.

All this is reminding me of the story going around several years ago about their mom thinking LOL meant lots of love, and sending messages like “Uncle Fred died, LOL”. Urban legend? Actually happened to a lot of people? Maybe both?

I still have my spreadsheet from last years Masters.  I had 2/19.  Hoping to beat that!  Even if it's not a formal competition, I hope it's okay to comment here!

Masters has it's own thread which was resurrected from last year.

Oh right I did know that. Somehow I was thinking this was still the place to discuss our success (or lack thereof) on FJs, but you’re right, it’s a better fit to talk about it there.

I can’t remember which episode it is, but later on it’s revealed that Frasier converted the space with the W/D hookup into storage for his hats (IIRC).  That may be the episode where he ends up buying Daphne a car at the end.

Oh right, I remember you posted this now. Hopefully this will merge with my previous post.

I'm rewatching for pretty much the first time since the original airing.  I'm most of the way through S3, and only just realizing that Frasier's fancy schmancy apartment apparently doesn't have in-unit washer & dryer.  I think two episodes in a row, Daphne has come in the front door carrying in a laundry basket.  Oh well, I guess people who live there just send their laundry out with a service.

Which leads to point two:  I know they always introduce Daphne as Martin's physical therapist or home health aid or something similar, but my gawd, that poor woman appears to be the chief cook/cleaning lady/dog walker/everything else they need to run a household!  I hope at some point behind the scenes she negotiated a salary commensurate with her responsibilities!

Quoting myself because I’m now up to season 9 on my rewatch (and apparently I remembered nothing from watching it as it originally aired) and I’m even more peeved to learn that they could have had an in-unit washer/dryer all along, but the space was being used for Frasier’s hat closet. (Remind me, have we ever seen Frasier wearing a hat?) And not only is Daphne responsible for doing the laundry, but also for losing a sock?  Again, I hope she’s being paid royally for this “other duty as assigned” for her physical therapist job. Does she even still live there?

Do people genuinely not hear the difference between Stanton and Staunton in the same way I don't hear any difference between Berry and Barry?

This is different from the Barry/Berry thing. In that case a large number of people hear/pronounce them both the same. In the  Staunton case, there is a city in Virginia spelled Staunton and pronounced Stanton. So some of us were arguing (maybe at least partially tongue in cheek, in my case) that when a contestant replied Stanton when the correct response was Staunton, there was Jeopardy precedent for considering it correct (based on, if you mispronounce it but it still fits the spelling…)

    ETA:

Okay, the more I think about this, the more I’m inclined to double down. Say you grew up in or around Staunton, VA, read a lot but didn’t have much access to audio stuff. Why wouldn’t you think Imelda Staunton’s name was pronounced the same as your city? If you were from Lima (ly-ma) Ohio and the correct response was Lima (Lee-ma) Peru, would you be ruled incorrect if you mispronounced it? Anyway, I’m glad it didn’t affect the outcome.

Or a household where folks take their shoes off indoors. I know not everyone does, but surely it’s more common than you see on tv.

I actually notice it most when I see women going about their normal household stuff in their heels or chunky boots. I mean, I don’t have a big problem with wearing shoes in the house, but why not go for something more comfortable?

I suppose it should be, but how many feet in a mile just isn't a $200 question to me.  That's the only one I got wrong in that category.

That one threw me, I was questioning whether a “statute mile” was something different from a regular mile.

As a (regular) Virginian, I call foul that “Stanton” isn’t an alternative pronunciation for “Staunton”. Although it didn’t make any difference to the outcome.

    Also, Freaks and Geeks !

Tied for Longest Streak of 0s (Week 23 – 31)

    •    @shapeshifter –Zeroes Streak = 5  (Total Zeroes = 6)
    •    @SoMuchTV – Zeroes Streak = 5  (Total Zeroes = 5)

That threw me for a minute, until I realized you were counting streaks of zero-weeks, not zero-days (because now that I think about it, you wouldn't have a record of our daily results). So I will throw down with @shapeshifter - my 5 zero-weeks were in between a week of 1-0-0-0-0 and a week of 0-0-0-0-1.  So 34 zeros in a row?  (Why am I arguing about last place?)

But in my defense, on The Jeopardy! Fan website, there's a frequent commenter who has passed 40 misses in a row.  My hat's off to him!

Reminder - The Master's Tournament is Prime Time, and is not part of the Jeopardy Season 40 Contest. If someone else wants to take it on - have at it!

In my further defense, I take pride in knowing the answers that took down Amy (Bangladesh) and Ken (it was either HRBlock or FedEx, whichever was the one he didn't pick).  I wonder what important stuff that has pushed out of my memory.

As of now, that's still only for celebrities in the entertainment industry (news about athletes goes in Sports, but there is no place for news about politicians or royals), but the recent note at the top of the forums home page says they'll be reviewing all the forum-specific rules and adjusting or removing them so there aren't so many pockets of the site with different/additional rules.  I cannot imagine they'll ever open the royals can of worms again, and when the politics sub-forum existed that turned into more moderation work than any site that's primarily about TV wanted to take on, thus it got shitcanned, so I don't know that even milestone news (got married or divorced, had a kid, died, etc.), which is not about their actions as a political figure, would ever wind up being allowed because of the discussion that tends to ensue, but stay tuned.

Haha, I’m remembering when Bob Dole died (2021, I think) someone posted about it in Celebrity Deaths, and despite their mention of his extensive television career (check his Wikipedia!) it got taken down pretty quickly.

I mentioned the death of someone who happened to be married to a former president.  Not allowed.

Just curious - was that before or after the recent "changing of the guards" (earlier this year)?  There was a new "politics policy" posted a few weeks ago, and I pm'd for clarification because I really couldn't tell what was different from the previous rules, and the response indicated (I hope it's okay to quote a pm here):

    Quote

The idea is to make it a bit more lenient. What remains the same is that any politics discussion is supposed to originate with the show (I don't know if you're watching The Night Agent, but, the show should not be used to randomly draw parallels to current politics. Any parallels should be drawn only in relation to an episode) and discussion should not drift away from the show into a politics only discussion. However, if, in the course of that discussion, a poster were to mention their political leaning in a post that is otherwise show related and there wasn't any intent to discuss their personal politics, it would be okay.

As long as the above meme wouldn't be random but show-related and posted for the sake of posting a political figure and the intention isn't to start a politics discussion then yes, it would be okay.

But that seems to be related to what's happening in shows.  The example I asked about was a meme with a politician but in a non-political situation - think Bernie in his mittens at the Inauguration, photoshopped into various tv-show-related situations.  (That got slapped down in the old days.)  I don't know what the policy would be if you posted about politics-related person in say, Milestone Moments or something like that.
