  1. Episode Pics

    James at the DEO!

I'm gonna predict the following interpretation of the pics + other spoilers:

    - Parents show up

    - Mon-El says he was always expecting them to pick him up and that he is leaving with them

    - Kara and Mon-El saying goodbye scene

    - Kara gets whammied by the Musicmeister

    - Mon-El freaks out and decides to stay after all

    - Mommy Dearest is pissed and puts a bounty on Kara's head

  2. I do think that this season has felt that outside of Alex&Kara a lot of Kara's development has been with/around guys. Not just because of Mon-El, but we also started the season with exploring how Kara interacts with feels about Clark (of course still in context of her relationship with Alex). And we have also had Jeremiah, though I consider to him be more Alex's story.

IMO the biggest problem is that from where I see it, Lena and Lillian just don't hold a candle to Cat and Astra respectively. To me Cat was just a so much more fleshed out character and it was obvious that a ton of deliberate care went into crafting the relationship between her and Kara. To me the writing for Lena just doesn't have the same quality at all. Cat had her own small universe of storylines and challenges that existed to give her layers.

Meanwhile Astra was not just physically intimidating, she also had the benefit of having a deep emotional connection with Kara. Lillian has her moments of being scary (for example in the episode where Mon-El and Kara were captured by Cadmus), but she doesn't pack the same punch as Astra. To be honest, to me Jeremiah has kinda been stealing the show for me as far as the Cadmus storylines are concerned. Granted, part of that might be Dean Cain, but imo it's also Chyler acting the hell out of her scenes and giving some kind of emotional weight to the connection Jeremiah is supposed to have with Alex and imo it's just flat out more interesting to be sort of kept guessing about whose side Jeremiah is really on, whether he will turn on Cadmus, how torn he is about it. While Lillian's plans and motivations are just kinda eh to me.

    Anyway, back to spoilers.

Behind the scenes of the flash crossover

Melissa says that there is a new villain coming up, who is closing out the season and that she is pretty scary.

Is she referring to Terri Hatcher's character here? Because I thought Hatcher/Sorbo were supposed to only come on for 3 episodes. If this is supposed to be about her then closing out the season seems like a weird way to phrase it.

  3. I'm fairly sure we lost Cat because of Flockhat's interests/preferences (like where she would like to work and how much she would like to earn).

Anyway, there are some shooting report videos floating around, Kara and Maggie, Kara and Mon-El, Guardian. There have also been spoilers for a quality Sanvers scene in an upcoming episode that involve a hospital bed.

I have to say, even though I personally like Mon-El well enough and I actually like that his story might be continued in the next season, I'm a bit disappointed that he won't go off with his parents for at least a while (which I'm assuming less because of the interview and more because of the shooting report). I think the most recent Legends of Tomorrow arc with Rip showed that the absence and return of a character can be handled very organically by a show (of course there it was because the actor had a fixed-time outside engagement).

IMO a lot of my enjoyment will be based on whether the Queen and King of Daxam storyline is any good.

  4. It occurred to me. Why is Mon-El's name really Mon-El? He was obviously lying to Kara and the DEO about his real identity (since he came up with the coverstory/fake flashback about having been the Prince's bodyguard). So wouldn't he have given them a fake name, too? Especially since Kara had heard of the prince, so one would assume that she would have heard his name as well.

And yet his parents also refer to him as Mon-El, both in the promo and when they were trying to track him down on the slave trader planet.

Is Mon-El supposed to be a generic name on Daxam like "Carl"?

  5. To me "woman of kleenex" always felt like it was also playing with the double meaning of "all Lois Lane contributes is crying in big panels".

But yes, of course there is this purely physical element, which I personally always saw as really lame teenage and pre-teenage boy ideas about sex. Though I think it should be said, to be fair, that at least this argument was used to champion ships like Clark/Diana or Clark/Maxima (sometimes imo even by the comcis themselves). Which of course to me is still creepy, to approach relationships as "Superman couldn't possibly be truly happy and fulfilled unless he can bang with all of his superstrength and speed". It always struck me as the sexual version of comic book fans arguing about which superhero would beat who in a fight or race. [don't get me started that the power levels of characters, especially characters like Superman and Supergirl is usually always "whatever the current context requires"]

And it's also debatable how applicable that argument would be anyway with the genders flipped, since from what I remember a lot of it focused on shooting sperm and superpowered kicking babies in the womb.

So or so, I think all of these points are moot anyway when genuinely arguing about the viability of a ship.

And yes, obviously there is some element of this in Supergirl and Mon-El since this was hinted at in a very small way (Kara's comment about not breaking his nose by accident). And while this is all fun and games, I would argue that this is still pretty meaningless in regards to the long term viability of a pairing, especially in the context of a tv show, whether other things matter rather than just whether the couple is happy together, like: does it make good story? Is it interesting to watch? Does it gel with the other elements of the show?

I've said previously that I think Kara strikes me as being less deeply into the relationship than him. I personally wouldn't mind at all if the show even hinted more explicitly that yes, lust and just wanting to bang is some element. IMO it wouldn't be taboo or villainized for women to also have somewhat superficial lusty feelings. Mon-El is nice looking, obviously willing, quick with the compliments, would it be so bad if Kara was evaluating him not just based on whether he truly checks all the boxes, but also because she wants to get laid? Human beings are motivated by lust too. Plenty of people have a first boyfriend/girlfriend that they experience a lot of things with, but it's not forever. I don't think something like that should cause Kara to get slapped with the big BAD ROLEMODEL hammer.

Yes there are dangers in real life if people pursue relationships because they are just needy for a relationship and don't want to be alone. But should warning of this really extend of "you are not even supposed to want it, be curious about it and willingly enter it unless it is perfect"? Like I said, I'm deeply convinced that people enter relationships for shallow reasons all the time and while surely plenty of them end in breakups, not all of them end in traumatic break ups and abusive relationships.

Not that I think that Kara has no feelings for Mon-El at all. There is obviously something there even if it might be smaller and slower developing on her side compared to how it was on his.

  6. I could have sworn that there have been a lot of portrayals that hinted that Kryptonians tended to be a bit cold (I believe there are some portrayals that sort of blame Krypton being destroyed on science/progress getting out of control on Krypton), not quite vulcan like, but more so than humans. And Ray is one of the most upbeat and happiest characters, at least on Legends.

Yes, in Kara's flashback it's not cold, but let's face it, she's a bit biased. Mon-El I believe called them haughty and stuck up, so that could fit with them being quite disciplined.

Are we really sure that all of Daxam society was this hedonistic? I got the impression that princely Mon-El was supposed to be hedonistic even by Daxam standards.

Relationshipwise, Mon-El has been reminding me of a puppy recently, can be cute, can be ill disciplined. Not necessarily the best relationship material even when he's well meaning. The thing is, why does every relationship have to be perfect? Why does every relationship candidate have to have all the boxes checked? Plenty of relationships are somewhere in between perfect prince charming love and abusive. They are just normal.

Plenty of people enter relationships just to see where it goes, because they are lonely, or because a good looking person's attention flatters time. Most of them don't end up with abuse and murder. There is no reason why it has to be all or nothing, perfection or despair for Kara.

I get the impression that Mon-El is way more into Kara than the other way around (for example based on his confession to her that he has never felt anything similar) and in a weird way this makes him "safer". We had Kara herself admit that she is worried of getting hurt. And we have the episodes where she rejected working with James and wanted to work with Mon-El instead because Mon-El is stronger and with James she was worried for his safety. To her dating Mon-El might be less of a risk. If it turns out well and she falls for him good. If it doesn't turn out well, nothing lost because she likes him but wasn't that head over heels in love with him and since he is a bit of cad, not too mad if he gets hurt a bit. All of this might make Mon-El an attractive proposition to Kara to sort of get her "training wheels" attempt at a relationship. And why not, Kara is a social person. Having a relationship has it's good and fun aspects. Why not try to have that and see what it's like, even if maybe not all boxes are checked yet.

As for good girl/bad guy relationships, I tend to not like a ton of them. So far at this point, I would put them emotionally closer to something like Spike/Buffy maybe? Rather than something like Chuck and Blair for example (yes Blair started out with bad girl traits but imo by the end they had firmly settled in a hand wringing good girl/bad guy relationship). Granted, Spike/Buffy were very different because they only got together due to very particular circumstances she found herself in. But I mean mostly that he was more in love with her than the other way around and she still had her own life as a hero that imo ultimately she didn't compromise on too much.

To me the worst kind of good girl/bad guy is when she is pining over him and he treats her badly or doesn't pay enough attention. Mon-El also hasn't, too our knowledge done anything close to what characters like Spike or Damon have done. He is so far closer to a normal careless jerk, but at this point it is imo balanced out that she doesn't seem particularly hurt by it. My interpretation would change a lot if we saw Kara crying her eyes out over every single slight of his. But so far I don't see this.

Last but not least, I wouldn't mind a "Woman of Steel, Man of Kleenex" relationship. I think it is super regressive that relationships where the man has powers and the woman has none (like Barry/Iris or Lois&Clark) are still okay, but with the woman the man has to be as good as her or better. This is why I have this deep hate for the Wonder Woman/Superman ship. It's just deeply offensive to me. She is the most powerful woman in the world, so people who ship her with like one of the few guys who is bigger in importance and stronger than her just anger me. Yes, most writers just deal with this situation by writing it as that the normal power man is just too emotionally weak to be able to deal with it, it's him, it's not her. But it's just imo a covering up of the underlying belief that a woman could never find a man hot who is weaker than her/who is just emotional support, the way a lot of girlfriends and wives of male superheroes are. And as far as I'm concerned, making the strong woman gay instead and giving her a human powered girlfriend is just cheating around the issue, that apparently a weak woman who is just "the soul of the team", "the emotional and moral anchor of the hero" is good enough, but a man with all the same traits is not good enough and instead just a loser.

Now I don't think that Supergirl has to be the show to do it well. But IMO using "man of kleenex" as an argument against a relationship just shows how deeply ingrained male/female stereotypes still are. Woman can be heroes and strong and everything, but god beware a guy not be as strong or stronger.

    Ok, rant over.

  7. It amuses me and makes me strangely happy that the Legends are still woefully incompetent at their main mission (in season 1 when they revealed that most of what they had done had actually helped Savage and no in season 2 the Legion absolutely being successful at getting their hand on the spear and rewriting reality).

That said, I'm very excited that it will be all down to Mick.

  8. I think if Stein were to exit the most logical end would be for him to stay with his non-real daughter. Leaving Stein behind might be appealing to them because the Firestorm special effects are expensive, and they are constantly looking for excuses why Jax and Stein are separated anyway because Firestorm is just too powerful and expensive.

I could picture Amaya saying goodbye to the team after she has successfully arrested or killed Eobard.

But generally I agree you don't necessarily have to read too much into it, it could have been that those were the set of people she had scenes with that day.

  9. I actually expected that storyline to go that the Mick/Amaya thing is one sided and her hooking up with Nate makes him angry and even more apart from the team, because he holds it as a grudge against them. Another thing that could have excellently fit into a Mick joining the Legion, is it for real or no? storyline. Like I said I remember there being a promo that first showed Nate/Amaya intercut with Mick in the rain, but it seems this was a fake out. Or maybe a storyline like that was planned, but it was cut because the writers thought it would be too petty or because they didn't want dark side Mick when we already have a dark side Rip storyline this season.

To a lot of this hinges on the quality of material for Mick and Len when Cold comes back, whatever it is their interactions will be like.

I still get a very poor feel for whether Wentworth wants to come back, like even if he was free to do things, maybe he would rather be on Flash than on Legends.

Anyway, the arcs that would have made the most sense for Mick to me would have been:

1.) Mick learns to accept Len's death/Snart is the temptation to be evil again and Mick rejects it. This would have fit with his hallucinations, and him maybe forming a bond with Amaya. Kinda like Sara and Rip had to accept they can't bring Laurel/Rip's family back.

2.) A Mick with the Legion of Doom storyline, with together with Len or spurned on by Len's vision. Would have fit quite well with a Mick that feels rejected by Amaya. Could end up being a fakeout with Mick switching sides again and choosing the team at a pivotal moment. If Snart is around could have had elements of Mick trying to convince Snart that he used to like the team.

3.) Snart is real, not a vision, and Mick now has to convince him that Snart wants to join the Legends. So Mick rejects going to evil path with Snart and instead convinces Snart to come to the Legends instead, because Mick's bond with the Legends has grown over the season.

Some people say that that picture of Went and Dom might me a hint that Mick is wearing the Captain Cold parker in the finale. What is your take on that? To me that would be more suggestive of a "Mick lays Snart down to rest", with him either going to the legion or stayin with the legends.

  10. Man, that makes me hopeful for some quality Heatwave/Cold scenes in the finale. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Mick ran off with still evil Cold for a while before picking the team in the end, mostly because I don't want things to get wrapped up too quickly. I still think a very excellent storyline for Mick would be if he went "undercover" with the Legion or any other badguy group. That way they could make good use of his rogue nature, he would be believable pretending to switch sides and they could show him genuinely being tempted or leave the audience guessing whether he has really turned to the dark side before going back to the time in a vital moment. But I'm just dreaming here. Whatever it is, I kinda hope that things don't just get wrapped up instantly.

BTW, whatever happened to the supposed big invasion from the planets of the hawks that the time masters were so afraid of which is why they supported Savage?

    • Love 2
  11. I'm not much a fan of Nate, but I think his purpose is to bring idealism. To be the person who is enthusiastic and still vowed by all this. So far there are no spoilers that hint at him leaving, right? Other than the fact that last season they got rid of the Haws and Savage because they were unpopular. The thing is, is Nate really that unpopular in general, non-fannish media? Because if the coverage is just neutral, then the fact that actor is probably cheap and his characters special effects might be too might give the edge to him staying.

So though I would prefer various other people to stay over him, this is not the only concern to the show runners.

Have there been any concrete spoilers of anybody leaving rather than the generic "we see it as an ensemble show with rotating characters"? I kind of get the impression that they are struggling to come up with proper arcs and stuff for everybody to do anyway.

I wonder if Stein is another one where it might sense to put him on the bench for a bit. He could maybe decide to stay in his daughter's universe for a while? Since Firestorm is another one where the special effects are expensive for them to do. But then again, if they get rid of all the people with the flashy powers, who is gonna draw in the comic book fans? Just another set of people with martial arts type powers is pretty uninteresting.

I'm still confused on how exactly they will reverse Rip's rewriting just by climbing into his minds and fighting his inner demons. Or will they just plop him into the Gideon chair? I think they made a huge mistake into making Gideon be able to restore limbs and bring people back from the dead. It just removes too much of the danger.

  12. Mick hasn't had a ton to do lately. It wouldn't seem too out of character if he disappeared at least for a while when villain Snart shows up with the Legion. Though I guess it depends on DP's plans. We haven't really heard anything that suggests Wentworth Miller really wants to return for a more permanent job, right?

I think the problem is though that right now the Legends have no proper emotional mission. Saving Rip's family might not have been super engaging for the viewers, but it worked as a red thread. I have a hard time picturing that Amaya doesn't get her revenge target by the end of the season and Sara doesn't seem too invested in getting Laurel's killer.

IMO they really need to recruit another villain. With Snart gone and Mick not having much to do and Sara being essentially over her "I'm a bad guy/I'm out for revenge" issues, the Legends sort of lost that edge that they also include villain or grey characters. So I think they need to find a person who is truly or fairly evil but who they need around for some plot point or another and who can antagonize the crew in interesting ways.

One question, a while ago there was a promo, the one that showed Amaya and Nate in bed for the first time. That promo also had a shot of Mick standing in the rain (probably making some people think that Mick would walk in on Amaya and Nate and be angry because he had been growing closer to Amaya) => has that scene ever shown up in another context?
