    From IMDB:

I'm posting this as no spoilers so that if people are watching for the first time the individual episode threads don't spoil the rest of the show.

I watched this show all the way through when it aired, and started a re-watch back when it was still on Netflix a few years ago and I'm still struck by how good a pilot it is. The voiceover is not annoying and really helps move things along without feeling overly simple. It also lends a nod to the old film noir detective movies. All in all I think it's a great pilot. The phones really flip me out (FLIP! PUN!) because aside from the old tech this show could be on the air today easily but then Veronica or Logan goes into their phone to look up a number and I'm immediately reminded it's 2004. I had forgotten that the Kanes' fortune was grown by perfecting online video streaming which made me chuckle in a meta way since thanks to the Kanes I'm able to stream this on Amazon.

Flip phones still exist, although the rich kids would all have had iphones.

I don't quite understand why Veronica bailed on Logan again though. He seems to have been pretty upright with her (and glad that he at least didn't intend for anything bad to happen with Veronica).  Why would she think he installed the cameras?  It could have been either of Logan's father or mother. In fact, my first thought was Logan's mother had them installed to catch Aaron with another woman.

The oldest bullying trick in the book is some popular guy asks you out, maybe to a dance (think Carrie) and then at the dance something humiliating happens (pigs blood, you make out and the whole group comes in and mocks you) and everyone makes fun of you and then they share the video, if they can get one. I don't think she thought he'd installed the cameras, at least on reflection, but it was a pretty reasonable bet he was using the cameras. Logan was an idiot for doing it, he has poor social instincts, and we know he was completely sincere.  I'm not sure if he ever understands it.

Thanks @clemmyb! I really do love this episode. The show is really running on all cylinders here.

In my prior rant I forgot to mention that during the "consensual" sex DUNCAN THOUGHT HE WAS SLEEPING WITH HIS SISTER! Soooooo yeah, maybe they don't want to call it rape, but at least in the realm of intentions Duncan was knowingly committing incest. Even though that wasn't really true, he thought it was! UGH why are we supposed to like him again?

Well, late to the party, still. I think Duncan and Lilly both really don't trust a thing Celeste says. He's been drugged. He actually, I think, loves Veronica. It is easy for me to think the distinctions could be blurred.

    1. What does Logan do to earn Pirate Points? Or is he just surrounded by enough point-earners that he benefits from their privilege?

    4. I get that Aaron's beating of Logan was due to the public embarrassment, but wouldn't someone like Aaron be all about these high-profile public charitable deductions?

      Reveal hidden contents

Veronica's paternity to Jake and then backed off?

I get the impression that the system is corrupt :-) I know it is a shock.

It wasn't necessarily the money, it was the control.

    Spoiler

I think this was the last time Aaron beats Logan and Logan continues to confront him, including the boots that he donates with the starts on them, and that this eventually (as she says) is what causes Lynn to kill herself. Logan is changing the status quo of the family. I was always pissed this wasn't addressed.

Very emotional episode.  I guess Cassidy had chlymidia for years and did nothing about it?  That's kindof surprising.

Also, i'm confused on the timing/ages of people, if Veronica, a senior, Dick a junior and Cassidy a sophomore, I presume. Season 2, Veronica is a senior, Season 1, she's just starting school as a junior and talks about it being a year since Lilly was killed.  So she was a sophomore during the year before and she was just an outcast not doing anything.  So was she a sophomore and at the year-end party despite being an outcast for a whole year and raped by Cassidy who wasn't even in highschool (but in 8th grade)?  Or did that happen while she was still in her freshman year, right after Lilly was killed and raped by Cassidy who was what, 13?

Why would Cassidy steal Mac's clothes?  I guess we're supposed to think he's just nuts?  Since he must be to bomb a bus full of kids.

After seeing Logan with Kendall, I'm surprised Veronica went back to him, but I guess saving her life helps overcome such things.  He's good at saving her life and they have great chemistry together.  And I guess since Logan was with Veronica all night, he doesn't yet know about his dad.  Though you'd think he'd have heard something by that morning by the time Kendall showed up.  Although I would expect she probably snuck out the room once she saw that so she wouldn't have to give a statement.  The police will catch up to her eventually though, considering her dna is all over that sofa.  And her true identity too, I would imagine.  Maybe that's what's in the briefcase, something about Aaron's death.

I don't think Cassidy would necessarily have symptoms, or be checked unless there was a reason to check him for that specifically, like he told someone he was being raped by his coach, which he didn't.

The timeline confuses me. Lilly and Veronica, I think, are the same age but Veronica is a year behind in school because her birthday is right before the school year starts, or something.

My initial impression was that Lilly was killed and Shelleys party was in December, but that doesn't seem like enough time for her to be bullying. It is hard to tell because the weather is so unchanging.

Maybe Lilly is killed in Veronica's sophomore year, early October, by November her father is ousted, her mother leaves, Duncan is sent to the loony bin, Veronica 'ignores' Logan to help sell there stuff and move into a smaller apartment and start the business, her father being out of town bail jumping a lot. Logan responds by spending a lot of time bullying her and rallying the troops against her. She is actually pretty busy outside of school. Then I think Shelly's party is in May or early June.  She spends the summer working in her father's business, and has started to pick up some PI skills, which she is using well enough so that Cliff is bringing her cases. Then comes the start of the show, Veronica's Junior year.  Duncan is back, heavily medicated.

Cassidy could have been 15, I think, depending on when his birthday is.

I think he steals Macs clothes so she won't go anywhere.

I love that Jackie takes Charlie to the dance, but there's something that happens there I've never fully understood, probably because it's never really talk about: at the start, Charlie's mom seems thrilled that Jackie has taken him to the dance, but near the end, she walks up to them in full bitch-face and is like, "It's time for Charlie to go home now."   She seems really put out about it.  Are we to believe that she's been listening to idle gossip about who Jackie is/who her father is, and now she's pissed?  Or is it something else?

It tracked for me, Mom is really possessive. But perhaps you're right.

And really, a Journalism teacher isn't going to recognize a pretty obviously plagarized speech from a famous movie?

That is odd, so I think it is up in the air whether it was plagiarized or if that was just his opening salvo and Veronica was being snarky about it. It could even have been acknowledged in the bibliography.

Fun fact: The Logan/Wallace thing came out of the fact that a fan (who just so happens to be my sister, haha) asked why they had never interacted at the VM con known as Marsathon many years ago. That is why I will always have a special love of this episode.

That's great! and I'm glad it happened because it points out that they could have been closer friends and it never developed.

  8. I kind of assume that Logan, who went to great lengths to hide his abuse (good lord, man, crawl to the damn hospital and bleed on them) wanted to hide his humiliation when Aaron had sex with Lilly. It was consistent with his behavior.

I do like that the show lets us know that while Veronica is our heroine she's not perfect and this episode is a good example of that. Wallace going off about how he's always HER sidekick and he just needs her to be his friend is a good point. She's his "best friend" but do they really ever do anything together other than have him help her on her cases? Not so much.

In the first season Veronica Is getting good grades, working as a receptionist at Mars Investigations, Doing stakeouts and then investigating Lilly's death, looking for Mom and doing side jobs at school for money. She is also undergoing a lot of Logan related stress.  In the second season Veronica is still doing the side jobs for money, investigating the bus crash, undergoing a lot of Logan related stress, and working at the coffee shop, and doing valedictory work at school, while preparing for Aaron's trial. Plus cleaning, cooking rubber bullets, and taking care of the dog. Also presumably applying for college, scholarships and grants, etc.

When does she have time to spend with friends, or surf, or do anything else, really? It is amazing she can get away, any of the seasons, for a movie and a snuggle at the grand. I bet she relishes a calm, relaxed couple of hours with Duncan.

I think that, annoying as this is, Wallace eventually realizes this.

Yeah, Piz is so passive-aggressive and selfish. He's apparently the perfect boyfriend (according to the movie trailer) compared to Logan. But actually, Piz is maybe the perfect boyfriend for someone else, but he's not great for Veronica. He starts out as a classic Nice Guy, acting all offended that she dared to have a boyfriend and then that she dared to get back together with that boyfriend. And then when they get together, he prioritizes living near her over his dream job, and is put out when she doesn't do the same. As you said, Logan would have understood, because he and Veronica are similar in that way. They need to be able to maintain their individuality in their relationships, where you get the sense Piz and Parker want something different from them.

I think Logan was being the Perfect Boyfriend to Parker, leading her on. I think he was giving her what turned out to be the wrong message, and Parker does notice fairly soon, they aren't together that long.

I only find it moderately unbelievable that Wallace would be tapped for a secret society... he's not rich enough and I didn't get the impression he was doing that amazingly on the basketball team but whatever, it's the penultimate episode, I'll let it go.

Late answering this, I think. Whew.

I think the main thing about the Castle was blackmail. He could be controlled and he could be shaped. If he was a gifted engineer/basketball player he would think he could make it on his own, but he isn't, and the Castle would know that once he is in position they can use him to place other people. He might never be one of their stars, but particularly with his sincere demeanor, he could prove useful.

Well, unlike in Game of Thrones where I seem to be the one defending the bad boys (generally the Lannisters), I'm definitely NOT a LoVe fan. As far as I'm concerned, Logan IS fundamentally the one responsible for Veronica getting roofie'd (far more than Madison, who V seems to blame for it) - "Oh, but I was trying to roofie somebody (actually, TWO somebodies) else!" really SHOULDN'T stand up in court (though it might well in Neptune). Sure, it may not have been him that filmed the two of them in the pool house, but as the "Producer" of Bum Fights, was it really so hard to believe he might? Should Veronica really give the benefit of the doubt to the guy who has consistently denigrated her (eg. calling her a ho in Echolls Family Christmas)? I get that he was a victim of abuse from his father which makes his actions slightly more understandable, but if you ask me, she was far too forgiving of Logan. If he hadn't been witty and looked like Jason Dohring, would people be as prepared to defend him?

(And on the subject of LoVe - Why was Veronica so convinced it had to be DUNCAN who gave her Chlamydia*? Didn't she date Logan over the Summer too? Somehow I can't see Logan being the sort of guy who was prepared to date a girl that wasn't putting out - though given the timeline of the Summer is somewhat fuzzy, it's possible that their make out session in the back of the car that ended in a gunshot was their first and only date)

    * I DO know who actually infected her, but from Veronica's viewpoint, he primary suspects should have been 1) Duncan 2) Logan

I think Veronica hates Madison and it isn't really logical and she's mad at herself for being so stupid as to take a drink from her. However, when she first starts to piece stuff together she doesn't know who brought the drug and may have actually thought it was Madison. It could have been, too, I don't think we see anything to indicate Madison would have been above making Veronica look like a drunken slut. Also, the salt lick thing was sexual assault and she didn't want to open up that can of worms.

I don't think she had actual sexual intercourse with Logan at that time, but if she had I'd imagine she would have made sure they used a condom and she would assume the rape was unprotected.

The bullying continues in all the seasons, in some form or another, it would make anyone skittish.

    Spoiler

parading Kendall in front of her in season 2 and beating up Piz and Gory in season 3 are all 'i'm a jackass, look at me, look at me' behaviors like the bullying in season 1.

btw, she does give him the benefit of the doubt about Mercer and that doesn't turn out well.

I also just looked at my comments from the first book and I realized that we still don't really have any kind of resolution for who killed Sacks and tried to kill Keith. Yes Lamb lost the election, but it looks to me like he had another cop killed. Shouldn't that be a bigger deal?

I'm guessing that is a job for, if it happens, the miniseries. Maybe the resolution will uncover some nest of scorpions and Keith can contemplate retiring and Veronica and Mac can contemplate their futures.

I was laughing out loud to the Don/Dan Lamb brothers. One idiot... fine... but two? It sounds like a comedy duo.

I... still don't feel Veronika and her voice unfortunately, read the book on one sitting and wasn't interested with Logan as a marine... I get why there is logic charavter wise... but I always imagined him being something else, a writer, a journalist... it was... hmmm.

The mystery was interesting but the whole feel of the series is like almost every other story out there. If it wasn't Veronika, I'd have folded on page 15.

Yeah, I don't see rereading them over and over and over, but I thought they were really consistent with the characters and well thought out.

The Don/Dan Lamb thing was just odd, though.

Writers are known for developing substance abuse issues, you work alone and when you go out to find people, bars are an obvious venue. Also he tended to skew off when he was brooding, burn things (tapes, pools). I thought writer had 'dead in three years' written all over it for Logan.

While I love Kristen Bell and 'Veronica Mars,' my question is whether we really need a series. As a VM fan, the movie was good. It tied up some loose ends but let some characters ride off into the sunset. And that's where I want to leave them. I don't know if I want to keep following these characters into adulthood. Somehow I think I'd be disappointed.

I think that a number of stories got finished with the books, Logan for example (I mean he can be around as a romantic figure, but his storyline is finished. He's faced down his demons and shown us how he will function in the future).  The books finished off some more stories, Lianne and Weevil.  I think for a lot of people it is okay if V is just a PI all her life,  but I think she came back to work on what she wants to be when she grows up and her relationship with her father, things that were cut off when she left Hearst abruptly and those storylines aren't finished yet, also Keith could use a bit more resolution (I hope).

Yeah, Dick was hilarious. I hate that they wrote in the part about him encouraging Beaver to rape Veronica. It soured his character. I mean I think he is an idiot and obsessed with sex, but it just seemed ooc for Dick to encourage something that evil.  If I were Veronica, that friendship would have bothered me much more and been wayyyy more of a deal breaker than him sleeping with Madison when they were broken up. I get it, Madison was a bitch, but it's not like she knew Veronica was raped or that the drink was drugged.

Well, Dick did give the roofie to Madison without her knowledge with the intent of making it easier for him to have sex with her, so actually a rapist, even if his plot didn't work. Assault with a deadly weapon can be worse than manslaughter, because of intent.  I think he  honestly thought that Cassidy was gay and so couldn't rape Veronica, so just being a bully.

I think Veronica had other issues with Madison, long term issues, and the lingerie store incident was more illustrative of why the incident bugged her and brought up Veronica's insecurities. Logan would have known that, too. She might have forgiven him for sleeping with Madison, considering they weren't together when it happened.

    But

I think that Logan had said 'less pain now versus more pain later' and then got back together with her and when she ran into some more pain it occurred to her that he was right, it was just going to be a cycle of pain.

  17. I'm also kinda' bored and waiting for the end.

The mirror/Eve's identity thing is a bit much, though, particularly remembering that huge psychedelic flooring plotline. I know she isn't the best actress, but do we have to again? Just hint at the turmoil with a few words and move on. Maybe give ten minutes to Monroe assembling a three baby crib.

I want to comment more, really I do, but I'm having trouble whipping up much interest. It is really too bad about this show.

    1.  Can you have a show based on the Archie comics without Archie Andrews?

It would be interesting if they could pull it off, but I think they would have to really phase him out. He could show up once or twice in an episode, sitting in a park with his guitar, getting a drink at the water fountain in his football uniform, seeing them at the malt shop. We'd get bits of him studying, getting a car, playing catch with his Dad. He'd be on a date with Betty when something would happen and Jughead would pull her away. On a date about to kiss Veronica over their shared malt when her mother comes over and orders her outside for a chat. At the end of the show he'd visit them all in jail or visit their graves as he drove off to State University. Sort of a counterpoint.

  20. So, did Jughead and Archie have a falling out because Jughead became homeless and didn't want Archie to know? Where is Jughead living now? In a Blossom mausoleum? Thing is you know Archie's father would take him in and the house seems bigger than necessary, so it is a puzzler to me.

Absolutely.  I kinda had that vibe all episode, but Mr. Cooper told Betty that Polly is sick and that she can only come back once she's better sealed it for me.  It totally sounds like the parents are trying to hide Polly away until after she gives birth.  The reveal that Polly and Jason had gotten married while still in high school also points strongly in that direction.

I thought breaking into the bathroom when she doesn't respond and finding her with a pregnancy test might make sense, so yeah. Has to be a pregnancy storyline at some point.

Riverdale is a pretty upscale community, at least it was when I was a teenager.

Is there another place in town where the kids hang out because Pop's must be crowded on Saturday night. Maybe that's why everyone frequents the river's edge.

If Veronica's mother is scraping by as a waitress why is Veronica giving out roses and mani-pedi coupons? Did I miss something?

I found myself wishing for more Luke Perry, frankly, and in a less inane roll. Something in a brioche. Why can't I spell? He seems to be like a father bot, hoping for character development. In general I think that the interactions between people don't seem to really be part of an interwoven net of story, yet, just individual interactions between people. Maybe that will change.
