I feel like Helen stepped down for more reasons than Mina. I think that was a set up for more down the road. I could be totally wrong, but I feel like she is going to play a role in the "partner and Mom" Ryan mentioned in several interviews during this season's promo. He said Max would realize he needed a partner for himself and a Mom for Luna - or something along those lines. Ryan and Freema's chemistry is undeniable, so for me it's about time they get on with it. I've seen the custody situation coming for a while. I don't think they have a snowball in hell's chance (though you cannot apply logic to this show) and I think a lot of their actions stem from their resentment toward Max and their no doubt complicated grief related to their daughter. I expect a lot of that will come out next episode. Still, Max doesn't deserve to lose his daughter. I don't deny he needs to do better, but ripping his child from him is a little extreme, IMO, and I really hope they don't go down that road. I would actually love to know what happened to Max's family. We know his sister died in childhood, but aside from his parents being briefly mentioned in relation to her death, we know nothing of them. Where are his parents? Are they deceased? Are they estranged? I'd love some backstory there.

I do love Todd! π and "Sandra Fall from Billing" I didn't understand the whole date thing either. Watching a show & not having to talk a lot vs. sharing a meal where all you do is talk.....π€·ββοΈ I think this will be Max's relationship to get him through the guilt and baggage he's dealing with as a widower and he'll probably help her in the same way. I still don't see a big, longterm romance though. I think it's a means to an end, but that is just me. I'm ready for this Castro thing to finally blow up. Every week it seems they add a little more to it. I did read that this episode was directed by Ryan Eggold. Thought that was neat!

I'm actually not counting too heavy on her having a huge role that'll span the seasons and become his next great love story mostly because the writer brought up Max having a rebound in the last interview I read of his. Ever since, I have been waiting on someone to be introduced. I will admit I thought she would have a little less baggage, but I suppose the widowed Mom angle does give them something in common. Who knows, I guess we'll see! I've been wrong before but I just can't shake that interview where he specifically mentioned a rebound. I thought it an odd choice of words if this new interest is gonna be around for a long time and the one he eventually moves on with.

She could burn the hospital down and Max would just be all, "It's fine, I'll clean it up." π

I also wondered how Helen automatically knew the poor kid was terminal and had 4 months to live that quick. Came down and told him in the ER. Not a scan to be had. And this new lady who also conveniently lost her husband (what are the odds?! π) and has a baby daughter meeting Max in the doctor's office...I am not here for that if that's where they're going.

THIS!!!! It blows my mind. Her fiancΓ© died OF THE SAME THING Georgia died of (or something very similar...I think he had a brain aneurysm?) yet they have never explored that even given their friendship & Max's grief. They have painted it to be that nobody could possibly understand what he is going through. Sometimes I wonder if they even remember giving her the scene where she told Max that. It's annoying.

See, I wouldn't for some reason. π€·πΌββοΈ Some of her pictures on social media I'm like, "Really?" And no, nothing wrong with 40. The closer I get, the younger it seems! π
-
Me too! I thought PLEASE don't let anyone get into the daycare because I just couldn't take that. They best protect that sweet baby & all her cute little hats! π

This was my thinking also. He thought his Dad was interested, so did that just to be a jerk. Though, she seems a bit young for Vijay too. From all I could find, the actress is 39? Unless I found the wrong Dierdre Friel. Speaking of age, it blows my mind that Freema Agyeman is 40. She does NOT look her age to me at all.

Rapid Response Team: New Amsterdam Cast in Other Roles
apn85 replied to Meredith Quill's topic in New Amsterdam
I have watched Freema Agyeman in Doctor Who! Really liked her character on there! -
I take care of itty ones in NICU and it's like accessing Fort Knox to get narcotics for our babies. Cannot imagine handing an adult a controlled substance and leaving the room before seeing them take it.
-
Agreed. The actress is lovely, but she and Ryan Eggold had next to no chemistry, IMO. Regardless of my feelings about their characters or what may/may not be done with them going forward, I do think Ryan Eggold and Freema Agyeman have amazing chemistry. I think that's maybe why Georgia/Max never took off for me and I just didn't care. I could have, and I know they wanted me to, but then he'd be in scenes with someone he did have chemistry with and I couldn't get past it. At least it's that way for me, haha!

I don't think Helen is leaving. I think she was just demoted to staff physician but I don't think her character will actually exit.
-
I don't know. I did read the actor had to leave midway through the season to work on another project he was committed to and so Bloom's storyline had to be rewritten to fit his departure. I could see this being the way they get him out of the picture. This ep was just eh for me. I was expecting a bit more. I dunno why, I guess being the fall finale? Yes, Georgia is GONE. I read an interview with the main show guy (his name leaves me) and he said it was the end of her. He also said that Max would be moving forward no matter if people felt he should or wanted him to or whatever. So, make of that what you will. π€·ββοΈ

I saw a snippet from an interview the actress did that said something along the lines of she believes people don't like her character because she's female. That Dr. Castro has nothing but the best of intentions and a lot of empathy as an Oncologist. Now, I'm sure she's a lovely person, but dear...... People don't like the character because she's absolutely heinous. Not because she's a woman. She literally threatened to walk with Max's treatment if Helen didn't give her 1/2 the Oncology department. It'd be terrible if it were anyone, but she knows and works for Max. She also knows he's a single parent who just lost his spouse and she used him as leverage because she knows Helen IS caring and empathetic. I'm not sure the actress is working on or watching the same show we're all watching. #confused

See, this is why I can't even pay attention to the actual medical cases on this show. I didn't even remember what they said supposedly happened to her baby - THAT'S how much attention I pay, haha.

If it isn't then I am going to be more pissed off than I usually am! π I have had those same thoughts, that Helen's behavior has to be indicative of something much larger going on, but then I remember other things in this show and start to wonder if she may just be used to prop other characters. I certainly hope not, the character and actress are way too good for that nonsense, IMO, but the thought has crossed my mind. You're right. We don't know very much about Helen. All we do know is after the crash she ran. From the time it happened to when we first saw her back at NA it had been 3 months. She and Max were close friends and they had not seen or spoken to one another in 3 months. That's crazy! I know she said she had been off making appearances and giving talks about his treatment, but really?? 3 months? So that, to me, made it pretty clear that she ran rather than stay and deal with it. I kind of wonder if it was the same after her fiancΓ© died. We have no idea how long ago that happened (at least I don't think we do) but she was basically running nonstop when Max met her. It's all very confusing and I really hope they have a plan because I do like her very much. And the only arc she really had, the baby thing, seemed to be laid to rest rather quickly. She told Max she had gone through with the IVF after the crash and as soon as she did it she realized she'd made a mistake. She wants to be a Mom but she doesn't want to do it alone. And that was the end of it. I'm just glad someone didn't knock her in the back of the head in the crack den. I mean, why?? I just sat there dumbfounded thinking, "Oh, she's really doing this, huh?" And you mean to tell me that never got back to Max?? That one of his doctors ON DUTY was arrested for taking a patient to an illegal safe site so she could shoot up heroin? You'd think if the board was involved that the Medical Director would be involved and I cannot see Max being all...yeah, just go bail her out, I'm busy. I could have seen Max going ballistic on her way more than I could see him not even being told. She has been making one reckless decision after another and that is not the Helen we met at the start of season 1.
-
Am I the only one wondering what the hell is going on with Helen? I cannot be the only person who feels like this season's version is very different from last season. Or maybe I am. I'd like to think it'd come to a head with Castro (who can scheme & plot with the best of them, I'll give her that....) but I figure the department will be taken from her by the board and that'll be that. I also thought tonight's Max content was done very well. I did like the self-awareness he had this episode and I'd like to think that'll be the end of Georgia, but who knows. I get giving the story the respect it needs, but with a show you can hang around one place for too long. The stillbirth storyline was so heartbreaking. Her being front and center with the curtains wide open wouldn't happen. We give the family as much privacy as possible. I did really like that they had and mentioned the CuddleCot. We really do use those and it's a great resource for families.

This. I've been a nurse for 12 years. I'm very little help here because I only take care of tiny ones, but I do attend c-sections on the regular. There has been one incident in my career that was totally the fault of the OB and completely preventable. You best believe we were all down in Risk Management giving statements before the end of the day. It did go further and was a big legal mess but the bottom line is nobody protected that OB's sorry ass. Not even the hospital. They no longer practice.

I've nothing to say except thanks, doodlebug! π My thing is there are plenty of stories you could actually do mostly right in a 1 hour span of time but they shoot for the stars over there. I also loved that Sharpe was never contacted about this child, am I right? The Oncologist was running around with the Medical Director cracking a case and trying not to get the place shut down while the Cardiothoracic surgeon was dabbling in Pediatric Oncology. Make it make sense!! π

Bloom did choose Ligon to be her sponsor instead of Helen, and she made it seem like she needed someone who wouldn't cave no matter how awful she acted or how badly she hurt or no matter what she said. I assume she was insinuating that Helen wouldn't be able to do it and the PT would, because he's apparently an asshole, according to Bloom. Clearly just a way to keep those two in one another's realms as I believe Helen could do whatever she wanted to do. She's the very one who turned her in, but anyway, Helen doesn't need one more thing so it's just as well! And I agree, it IS a disservice - I'm not sure where the extreme devotion to Max came from. I also don't care what the writers say, I absolutely think that eventually they will end up together. I think the writing has been on the wall for a while now. I know many disagree (and that is totally fine) but I just have a feeling, if the show carries on after this season, that eventually that will happen. She wants a baby but doesn't want to do it alone. He has Luna by himself. They literally have some sort of codependent relationship that I don't fully understand, so maybe I am wrong but they're gonna have to prove it, lol.
-
Agreed! Like you said, if they wanted to keep the actress around, they could have killed someone else. And as for Helen, I truly adore her, but yes, it is time she focus on herself for a change. Sometimes I think her spreading herself so thin over everyone is some sort of messed up coping mechanism that she has. I hope that eventually Max finds out she gave up 1/2 her department for him. He needs to realize that friendship is a two way street and do something nice for her for a change. She has done nothing but carry his ass on her back from day 1 - be it his doctor, the person he confides in, his deputy medical director, etc. and it's time. It's just time.
-
I was hoping the same! I thought, well at least it looks as if he knows that is a problem and he needs to push it away and continue on, but...... And I agree on his behavior concerning Hartman. The fact that Sharpe hesitated when she saw who the intern was on the case meant it's well known he's irrational when it comes to the guy. I mean, I get it being hard, but the guy wasn't at fault. Georgia had used up 8 3/4 of her 9 lives before she ever rolled into that hospital! I'm growing tired. I did read everything comes to a head in episodes 9 & 10...which I believe is the fall finale and winter premier so I am praying Max will get the breakdown over with but knowing this show, I doubt it!
-
I could see that. In the episode where he said to Luna they'd have to show Georgia her laugh when they got home you could tell Sharpe knew something was up. Honestly, a picture wouldn't be THAT big of a deal to me (I kind of equate that to people who go to the cemetery to "talk" to their loved ones), but she knew it was more than that. Which I think is exactly why he pushes back at her so much, he knows she is the one person who can see right through his bullshit. I don't know. I just feel like it's coming and I really don't want to see him take it out on her.
-
I agree with SO much of this! You all just say it way better than I can. To the person who is pencilling down Max's mental breakdown for the midseason finale, I said the same thing the other night. And to the person who pointed out how much Sharpe takes from him, to the point it's like, "Come on, girl!" - I'm going out on a limb to say his breakdown is going to land on her. I don't know if it's going to be toward her, or if it's gonna just be around her, but I totally think she's going to be the lucky recipient. That's where I'm putting my $$ for now. And the blood on the rug? I immediately thought of Luna as well. She's gonna start crawling and yuck, yuck, yuck!!
