Trevor St John has turned out to be such a treasure for Y&R - did anyone else notice in yesterday's show, when Tucker orders a bottle of champagne for him and Ashley, how, rather than just shouting out for a bottle of their best, TSJ actually made eye contact with the day actor playing the bar tender and played it as an interaction between the two of them, thereby including the actor as a true character in that scene?

This is really perceptive! ( I adore this actor and he’s the only reason I may reconsider dumping the show entirely.)

I wouldn’t be surprised if the truth never comes out. Phyllis doesn’t ever seem to pay for her criminality for long. Same thing if Kevin is asked to find the truth re the ambulance crash. She would coerce him into lying in a second. Maybe the writer (singular) is planning on ending this on a high note….🤡

For those who have been watching for decades…is this the worst the show has been? And is it shedding viewers?

This is by far the worst the show has ever been! I have tried repeatedly to stick with it since last fall and I am more disappointed than ever. Almost every couple is boring, mismatched, or offensive. None of the stories have momentum and eventually go out with a wimper in the most perplexing ways. Phyllis is probably the worst character in daytime and Nate and Victoria are unwatchable. It would take a writing miracle to redeem this mess.

Oh, Sally. Why are you wasting what you've got on Nick? Whhhyyy?

I'm with Tessa, the tree topper Mariah chose was not festive. It looked like pewter.

Faith chose to go to Europe instead of coming back to GC. Hmm. And what's the big deal about celebrating Christmas in Switzerland? She could do that anyway. Grandpa Victor probably has a chalet at the Newman family's disposal.

More of Chelsea's neverending apology tour. Yawn. Who's left, Lauren?

Lol, Victor was looking at Adam like he'd sprung a second head. You'd think being allowed to attend the holiday dinner at Newman ranch was akin to having an audience with the king at Buckingham Palace.

Sharon warned Chelsea it was dark outside. Is Chelsea not supposed to go out at night by herself?

Sally, turnabout is fair play. You might want to know what Nick's capable of too. Him and his family would make a dossier big enough to rival a set of encyclopedias.

"Ambiguous"? I don't think that's a synonym for "hypocritical." If anything, the GC people who've given Sally the most grief = unambiguous hypocrites IMO.

Wait until Billy finds out how much time Adam and Chelsea have been spending together. He'll lose what's left of his mind.

Contrite, demure Chelsea is so boring. I thought the writers would do better at delivering  a compelling story of depression and suicidal ideation, but instead we have … this. Unlock the doors and unscrew the shampoo bottles!

I don’t know what it is, but I get such a kick out of Tucker’s sort of world weary, laconic, slightly befuddled way. He makes that low energy shit work. Take notes, Noah.

Good description. Noah is a sleepy mess and lacks the charisma to be a male lead.  I think there is something lovable about Tucker.  I occasionally laugh watching his scenes with Ashley because the actors seem like they are legit having a good time.

Holy shit how long is the Chelsea  apology and redemption tour going to drag out?
Billy is an emotionally abusive jerk. He’s laying a guilt trip in Lily for not being over the top invested in Chelsea. I hope Chelsea is running a con and leads his butt biscuity ass down a road of destruction.

Well said! I just started watching again after a five month hiatus (possibly a mistake) and I can’t get over the monstrosity that is Billy Abbott. I hope Lily snaps soon and tosses him out. The writers have saddled her with this weirdo for far too long!

The show is still going at a snail's pace @adore.  My sympathies about your mom.  I hope you are doing ok.

There are stories with potential, though, such as Adam and Sally, Sally and Chloe, Mariah and Tessa, and Diane making Phyllis absolutely miserable.  I'm also intrigued by the possibility of Lily buying the Grand Phoenix, and sincerely hope they decouple her from Billy so she can move on to someone better.  I'm also more interested in Allie since she put Ashley on notice the other day that she's nobody's fool.  She needed an edge and that was a good first step.

Thanks so much, Kitty. I am really liking the idea of Allie having some backbone (and I have always thought Lily was too good for Billy!).  I watched a preview for this week’s upcoming shows — I am getting weird JT/Victoria flashbacks, but maybe I am misremembering the wrap up of that story.

  7. i haven't watched this show in several weeks. it was my mother's favorite show and we would watch together and discuss. she has been very ill with cancer since spring and recently passed away. i want to try to get back into it. has the pace picked up at all since Tessa and Mariah's wedding? or do the stories continue to move at a snail's pace? i found it pretty frustrating for awhile, esp when Phylis was putting on ridiculous, campy performances to get under Diane's skin.

(i wasn't sure where to post this. mods - if this is in wrong place, please move/remove!)

Ooohhhh Molly. This time you have gone too far. What kind of mean girls shit was that?

"Oh, was that timer for your bacon? Whoopsies"

She is the worst. I can't imagine having to bake under strict time constraints while simultaneously fielding her inane questions. Who could concentrate with a manic preschool teacher in their face every five seconds?  Poor Carolyn.

  9. I really enjoy A Way With Words.

    From Wikipedia:

A Way with Words is an American weekly public radio program discussing the use of language in everyday life, along with linguistics, lexicology and folk etymology from a pool of listener questions from weekly callers into the program, along with a weekly word game with quiz expert and comedian John Chaneski.

Martha Barnett and Grant Barrett are excellent hosts -- really personable and funny. They answer all sorts of oddball questions like "What is the origin of good two shoes?" and "Who is the 'she' in 'she sells seashells by the seashore'?" and recommend books, websites for language lovers, etc.

Pearl necklace refers to a specfic sex act.   ZZ Top has a famous song about it. It was a bit shocking he would say that to Christian but there have been other sexual comments made toward him this season. Christian seems to like it.

I know what it is. I cringed when I thought that's what he meant. Ew.

  11. This elimination seemed fair. Aaron’s look was a disaster and he knew it.

Coral probably won’t (and shouldn’t) make it to the finale, especially if she continues to treat challenges as mere suggestions! If there is a neon colored ballgown challenge coming up, count on Coral to submit a pastel fringy frock. Sometimes it is hard to tell if she is a risk taker or risk averse or … just eccentric.

Anyway, I won’t miss Aaron or his string of ho hum near-hits.  (Why was he talking about pearl necklaces when Christian handed him a pearl purse?? I was waiting for cricket sounds or a clue from the editing team that, yes, something weirdly suggestive just happened.)

I have always thought the same.  I think they should have let her leave and come back for another season.  She never did well after the incident and the judges felt too responsible to criticize her.

I would love that!  And bring on more Housewives!  Luann and Gizelle can come back anytime!

Honestly, for PR, it kind of is.  The judges pretend that they are about how the client feels, but they don't.

It definitely is for PR! Just not sure if that approach will work so well outside of reality tv.

Aaron's taste level is also too poor to suggest he'll win the one that matters.

Agreed. Yet, I think dressing the Housewives was a perfect opportunity to showcase his taste level (and still no win).

Loved Luann's look and hated Shannon's! The hair pulled back was aging and the dress fit too snugly across the stomach. Coral's gamble was hilarious.  Ignoring your client and pleasing yourself is an excellent business decision!

  14. I must be the only one who thinks Aaron is supremely overrated. His stuff is kind of meek-chic? I don't know.  The monochromatic fuzzy oatmeal look isn't offensive, but it's also not particularly thoughtful. It’s almost like couch potato Eileen Fisher. I also hate how he's always underlining his experience, spouting trivia (e.g. The Just Skating By episode) and casually offering up ungenerous critiques of the other designers. His interactions with his betters are ingratiating and cringey. His tirade last week was probbably worse that Meg’s meltdown week 1.

Glad Octavio is gone. Even Ariana Grande retired the oversized sweatshirt look. Those awful pink shoes should share the accessories scrap pile with the hair curlers.

I do think maybe some of the drama and bad behavior we are seeing are an effect of the pandemic. Most people probably have not had in-person interaction with people outside of our own bubbles for a year and a half.

This is a valid point. People are flipping out on airplaines, screaming at cashiers, quitting their jobs in dramatic fashion, etc. Maybe these same people would be uncivil regardless, but pandemic-related stress and attendant bad behavior is no joke.

That said, I loved the top four looks and would wear Kristina's in a second if it were available. Last week's glazed blue dress also looked great.

That's what Christian himself said, although I don't know how he would know that. Did Production call him up and say, 'You're not going to be on this season of Survivor because Jeff doesn't like you?'

Thanks for the reminder to add them to my market order for this week.

I don't think she does it that often. I've never heard her do it and I watch the feeds all day long lol. So, at the very least, in the past week she hasn't said it every 5 minutes between the hours of 8-5 BBT.

Maybe because it comes across as so immature and vicious it seems like it is more often?? Five min is hyperbole.

Some members of our book club had the same thoughts about Hamnet, but I still count it as the best book I read last year.

I really want to read this.  I'm in the early chapters of Shakespeare in a Divided America by James Shapiro (2020) and I thought of Hamnet as a nice companion read.

(I liked Maggie O'Farrell's The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox alot and her writing style didn't seem too... mannered?... in that one).

I disagree. I find Tiffany's habit of going from room to room trashing SB very tiresome. It's honestly beneath her to be this pressed about someone who is essentially harmless.

Agreed. Tiff is a very clever, observant person and this isn't a great strategy. Slut shaming SB every five minutes, or when anyone is within earshot, is definitely beneath her. What is the implication? That because SB is unfaithful to Shelly it follows that eventually she would be disloyal to her fellow hgs? That she's too distracted by Ky to focus on the game? She doesn't explicitly say those things (or maybe she has and I've missed it!).

I suppose the veto scandal has turned off a lot of people, so perhaps she could focus on SB's self-centeredness/poor sportsmanship instead of speculating about Shelly's hurt feelings.  Until recently Tiff seemed like a shoe-in for America's Favorite Player, but I'm not so sure now. Dx's popularity is on the rise and a lot of viewers seem to like Claire. Sure, the grand prize is way more money and striving to be one of the BB greats doesn't mean playing a virtuous game necessarily. I just wish she'd tone down some of the petty stuff and talk real game.
