The chair and noise thing was both obnoxious and bizarre. I also wondered about the second outfit (and at Tony's statement that she should change - before we see her in the second outfit).

Seriously, all that banging on the floor was ridiculous. I am surprised Margaret didn't walk out.

I liked the contrast between Margaret and Tony with Elizabeth and Phillip. Still, the queen and husband have weathered 10 years of ups and downs, I doubt Tony and Margaret will have that same commitment.

Thanks to the recappers for explaining the MacMillan situation. I was thoroughly confused. First, I thought he was having an affair and she was leaving her husband. Now I understand they were talking about her ending an affair. I still think they could have explained it better on the show.

Philip is such a whiny baby. You knew you were marrying the future queen.

He gets on my nerves with his sullen attitude. I do, however, think he didn't expect this life so early in their marriage. Nor did Elizabeth but she certainly is handling it better.

I visited a friend who is doing a rewatch, and we watched Not As Cute As Pushkin.

i don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but man does the life and death brigade class-interrupting incident bug the shit out of me. Rory could have shut that all down right there, but deep down she likes the attention from Logan!  Logan seems almost sociopathic in that episode.

Also man I I were that prospie student getting constant lectures about benches I also would have been driven to drink.

Rory was the worst tour guide ever. She didn't bother to show Anna (was that her name?) any fun spots to balance out the stuffyness of hanging out in libraries and blah blah blah about the bench. She even had to call her 30 something mom to get ideas over where the girl would go for fun. Most college kids would know without asking an adult.

I'm going with they didn't use a condom. If it happened during their wild night together, they were both a little tipsy and reckless.

Absolutely. It's more nonsensical than the Golden Girls house.

My biggest problem with the house is Rory's room. I've never seen a bedroom off of the kitchen before.

Things like that bug me. I want to believe that the house is real, and when things don't add up it takes me out of the story.

If I recall correctly, on Roseanne there was a similar room off the kitchen. But I have never seen anything like that in real life.

  5. As a parent, I'd be much more freaked out if my daughter went to a sleepover with a male chaperone. I don't recall whether those girls parents had even met Luke before. Apparently the parents were fine with them sleeping over at his place. That boggles the mind right there.

I do see why Anna was upset but she took it to nuclear levels. Instead of 'hey, don't have your girlfriend who I never met hang out with my kid unsupervised', she went psycho and it made her seem like a villain. Then it's easy to dismiss her concerns. It seemed she was raising April in the same way Lorelai raised Rory as far as keeping family life separate from her dating life. I don't disagree with her not wanting Lorelai to hang out with April, but she went about it all wrong.

I think she would have had a flip out a la "Kill Me Now" and when Chris wanted Rory to visit on spring break, but after her flip out, she would realize she was wrong like she did in both those cases.

I always thought her freakout was more Sherry related. Suddenly Chris is sending xmas cards and wants to send the holiday break with Rory. It's not hard to see Sherry pushing for this. Especially with how pushy she came off when Lorelai first met her.

I liked that scene, too. "What's up, Quippy?! Why so silent?!" always makes me laugh. Paris was making those nasty comments, just as she'd done the day Rory received a D.

Re: Lane being up so early. Maybe Mrs Kim made sure she was up early.

    Good point about Mrs Kim.

I love snarky Rory, probably because she is usually so poised.

Lauren Graham reflects on the 'bittersweet' feeling of the 'Gilmore Girls' revival now being behind her

So there was a fake revival ending (last 10 minutes)?

I read the article but didn't see any mention of a fake ending. ?? I think what she said of the revival being more grown up is true. Maybe that's my quarrel with it. I liked the CW type stories.

It's too bad her pilot didn't get picked up. I heard her mention it on the gilmore guys podcast.

I will say this about Logan vs Jess: Logan was at least wise enough to try to get in Lorelai's good graces, especially hard as by the time he came to see her at the inn, he was indirectly responsible for Rory leaving Yale and driving a wedge between her and Rory. Watching second season and Jess being such a tremendous ass to just about everyone, especially those you were trying to be nice to him, tipped the scales back towards Logan.

I liked that too, especially because we know Logan doesn't have the bond with his parents that Rory has with Lorelai. It's a mystery to him. But he gives her respect because she's Rory's mother and he knows that Lorelai has influence with Rory.

I do love parts of that episode though. Namely, the look on E&R's faces as they watch L graduate, and the look on her face as she looks at them.  She goes from being annoyed at how over the top they are being to tearing up watching them be so proud of her.

I have a major soft spot for episodes where you can tell they are really proud of her (Help Wanted is another one).

I love those rare moments too. I do think if Rory had been at the graduation the focus would have been on her and Lorelai and the scene with her parents either wouldn't have happened or had less poignancy.

But yeah, Rory goes to NYC on the day of her mother's graduation. If she was a kid who occasionally skipped school it wouldn't be such a big deal. I guess hormones overrule common sense.

Question for you fine folk... I'm not sure if this has been discussed here or not.

HOW does Luke end up wearing another guy's socks? If this guy (or guys?) sleeps over at Nicoles place, does he not realise his socks are missing when he puts on his shoes? It seems like such a random thing to forget. It's not like a tie or some peripheral item. Socks are pretty integral part of getting dressed no? So are we to believe that this guy was actually leaving his clothing there? And if so, how did they think that would work considering that Luke was supposed to be living there... not just sleeping over randomly.

I assumed he left them there and they got mixed in with the laundry. Maybe he had to dash and forgot his socks.

    On 6/5/2017 at 2:20 PM, Kohola3 said:

She certainly was playing fast and loose, though.  They were supposedly married.  They were occasionally living together.  Yet she had a guy over often enough that she did his laundry?  Why even bother with the whole scenario?  Just call it quits and be done with it.  I agree, the whole sock thing was stupid.

I have wondered about this (despite not caring a whiff about either of these characters). Luke was maintaining a separate residence and only sleeping at her place a couple times a week. I think Nicole was tired of waiting for him to commit. She either chose to move on or was playing the jealousy game. The show didn't give it much closure. He finds out she's "cheating" so that's it, divorce.

That actress, Melora Hardin, is so talented. I had no trouble connecting the shrink on GG to her other character, Jan Levinson on The Office. Two very different personalities but a similar enough preppy look. She was one of the funniest, memorable recurring characters on The Office. However, I had trouble connecting the same actress to her other character, butch lesbian Tammy Cashman on Transparent. However she was great as a totally different character in Tammy- hilarious, very sympathetic as more Pfeifferman-family collateral damage even though she definitely has her own insufferable bizarre side contributing to the problems.

I can't get over that I hated Zack on Gilmore Girls. And I hated Terri in True Blood. However knowing that Todd Lowe played BOTH of them, convinces me that Todd Lowe is a MAGNIFICENT actor.

Her hair is much different so it took me a few minutes but I have watched that car therapy scene with Lorelai so often, it was easy to pick her out. I never watched the Office so I only know her from GG.

As far as plot contrivances go, this one never bothered me.  I thought it also made sense because I always saw the Harvard dream as one more way Lorelai wanted to be different from her parents, where as at that point, I felt Rory was more the middle ground of not just kowtowing to their every request but also honoring her grandparents and genuinely caring about their feelings.

I thought Lorelai overreacted about the Gilmores (particularly Richard) overstepping with Yale because in her mind Yale=toeing the family line while Harvard=freedom from their influence and expectations.

It's no coincidence that Harvard is the rival to Yale.

I liked the idea of Lucy and Olivia. All for giving Rory more normal Yale friends, in both temperament and class, than the ones she ran with in the past. However, the execution sucked. They were really grating. And downright manic for supposedly normal girls. I came to like Krysten Ritter on Breaking Bad and Jessica Jones but she really sticks out as miscast in this supposedly "easy" low demand bit part. The actress who played Olivia was better. Adding contrived Marty drama so early in the relationship but also simultaneously as the series was about to end made the relationship more off putting because it ended up defined by weird inorganic conflict.

Upthread, I think I agree with @shron17 that I like AYITL and S6 more than S7. I also like AYITL more than S6, although S6 benefits from more eps.

I liked Olivia better too. I didn't even recognize Krysten Ritter when she was on Breaking Bad, and I can usually spot a GG actor right away. I am watching Transparent now and I spotted one of the characters as the psychologist who gave Lorelai therapy in her car.

A really UO : they should have dumped Paris after season 3. It's a contrivance that Rory's high school frenemy winds up at the same highly selective university, never mind becoming her college roommate.

I know, Paris is a great character. Come up with a new one just as vivid for Rory to interact with at Yale. I mean, when ASP wrote created other tv shows post GG, she had to invent new characters, right?

And if we absolutely had to keep Paris as a character, just have her interact with Rory as a newspaper colleague.  If they did, by coincidence, end up at the same university, it would at least be plausible that the would both chose to work at the school paper.

You're not alone. I think they kept her around because they liked the actress (and so do I) and Paris became a character that some fans love. I think Rory should have run the other way and not tried to forge a friendship with Paris. If a classmate did to me what Paris did to Rory during the Chilton years, I'd stop associating with them.

I would hope if a college allowed one party to request being freshman roommates with another that they would check with the second party! Otherwise wind up with stalkers and bullies rooming with their targets. Yuck.

my first college didn't allow freshman roommate requests because they wanted people to meet new people. The college experience and all.

Yes, I agree. My eldest was a college freshman a few years ago and they had rules about not rooming with friends. They purposely put strangers together so kids can meet and know other people the first year and not stay in a cocoon. Which you could argue is exactly what Rory did.

I think Lorelai was hypocritical and her problem was less with money and more with her parents.  She wanted the benefits of money and acted like one dinner a week was an unreasonable thing to tolerate to get those benefits. For all she wanted to be a self-made woman, she always had the trump card of rich family to bail her out when she really needed it.

Agreed. Lorelai had no problem with Jason taking her to the fancy restaurant or his lifestyle. Same with Chris. It's only when it involves her parents does she equate it with being horrible.

My UO is that I actually liked Lucy and Olivia. I thought it was definitely realistic that Rory would make friends with them especially after Logan went to London. I kind of wished we'd seen more of them. I liked that Rory took them to Stars Hollow as well. :)

I liked them too! Rory finally had friends! We saw her open up to them and show some of her vulnerabilities, which I loved. She finally had someone to hang out with and just have fun. I know she gets that from Lorelai (and I love that aspect of their relationship) but having friends her own age was good for Rory, imo.

I know fans love Paris but it amazes me that Rory kept her as anything but an acquaintance after some of her stunts.

  14. I really enjoyed this series, having very little knowledge of the real life people that were portrayed. I thought it was interesting that Bette had rivalries with Faye Dunaway and Katherine Hepburn. Most of my familiarity with old Hollywood movies comes from Hepburn and Cary Grant movies. So it seems Bette had issues with others, not just Joan. Speaking of Joan, she really tugged at my heart in this one. I teared up at the In Memoriam scene for her. Mamacita rules! I was so glad to see her come back.

I h a t e d the sobbing break up phone message she left Luke.

The Way we Were is one of my favorite movies and that was stolen directly from it.  It was lazy, poorly written and was a ridiculous  overreaction by Lorelai.

ASP forced that in the script; Luke is no Hubble!

Lol that bothered me too! I know we were supposed to be invested in the breakup and whatnot but the Luke is Hubble comparison just felt so wrong. It made me wonder how familiar with the character of Hubble they were to make that ridiculous comparison. Lauren killed it in the crying scene. But Luke is no Hubbell. Nope, still not over it.

Sex and the City did a Hubble reference to one of the characters and while it's not a perfect fit, it makes more sense than the GG reference.

JC had a size 4D shoe? That's crazy. Like the clothing industry sizes must have changed over the years as I'm very petite and have a bigger foot than that. With a bust of 37" I'd even venture to say that she'd tip forward because there isn't enough foot to stand on!!

I know, right? I am petite as well and those shoe sizes sound so tiny. One woman claimed to wear a 2 and 1/2 size. That sounds like a child's shoe.

  20. I agree with your list, @deaja but would rank Dean (high school years) a little higher. Doyle deserves a medal for putting up with Paris for as long as he did.

I was thinking about this, the characters all seem to think Max was a great guy, which I think is fair. But he made some missteps like the proposal. And the one that ticked me off is when Rory "ran away" and he made it about why Lorelai hadn't disclosed their relationship rather than comforting her. But we have Rory, Sookie, and even Lorelai herself saying how great he was, and it can influence the audience's opinion.

Yes, Lorelai's dumbfounded look at their subterfuge was what made funny. They were so matter of fact about it. That's why I loved them together, they were definitely on the same page.

The other weird thing is one other time, Lane was out waiting for the bus with Rory before school.  Now, Rory is running late and Lane is still at home.  If I had that much time left before I had to be out, no way I'm up and dressed just to wait with someone else for the bus.

I think Rory said it was a half hour to Hartford.  So, when does school start and when does it end?  For someone with an hour commute and tons of homework (which I suppose she could do at least some of on the bus), she seems to have plenty of free time, doesn't seem to have to get up that early and we've never seen her get home after dark or leave before light.  Amazing feat for winter in the north, I must say.

Lane is an early bird for sure. In season 1 she was jamming to music in Rory's room before school. Lorelai hadn't even had her coffee yet and Lane was already at their house cranking music while Rory got dressed.

Then there's the time Dean hops on Rory's bus just to say hello to her before school. In my experience, teenagers are not much on the early morning routine. And Lorelai and Rory regularly get up to shower, do hair and make-up, go to the diner for breakfast before school or work. Who does that? If Rory were real, she would probably roll out of bed, jump on the bus, and sleep on the way to school.

I suspect that was LG and DS's real-life friendship coming through. She wasn't nearly as friendly with SP.

That may be true but they could have been directed to tone it down. And the L & L scenes could have shown some joy. Amy seems to be saying that Lorelai's relationship with Chris was fun and chummy, due to their childhood beginnings, while Luke is her adult relationship. The problem is that it comes across as lacking in any happiness. For those of us who liked Lorelai with Chris, Jason, or even Max there were elements of playfulness in each relationship. With Luke it feels so heavy and lacking of that.

In the revival they seem settled, and I mostly accepted it due to how Luke fit in the girls lives now. And Lorelai seemed happy. It's not the giddy, flirtiness that I love when she's with Christopher but more being comfortable, I guess? She's my favourite character and I want her to be happy but damn if her life doesn't depress me a little.
