  1. It doesn't seem like much time has passed since Lucy got there, so it's weird to me how much they seem to have bonded already. Granted, they've been in a few perilous situations together, but I wish there'd been a little bit more breathing room. Anyway, I'm glad the misunderstanding between Lucy and Lockwood didn't get dragged out.

I read the first of the Lockwood books and wasn't really into them and wasn't really into them despite adoring Jonathan Straud's Bartemeus series. But I thought I'd give the show a go and I find that in action the characters are a lot more likable.

I felt the same. I liked the world and the writing but didn't really connect with the characters and still haven't picked up the second book. They did a great job casting the 3 leads who are appealing individually but also have nice chemistry with each other. I was particularly impressed after learning that this is Cameron Chapman's (Lockwood) first onscreen role.

It's been a while since I read the book, so I'd forgotten how horrifyingly callous all the adults are. The scenes with Lucy's mother were especially upsetting.

I'll definitely keep watching and am looking forward to seeing Luke Treadaway show up.

Last episode Gregory said that his lack of money was still being an issue in his romantic life, and in this episode his dad mentioned that Gregory could take Amber out for a nice dinner if he went to work with his dad. Interesting that the show is making this a consistent theme. Gregory is obviously not leaving the school, but it feels like the show is setting up for something. We still have that loose end with that rich guy (Barbara's former student) who wants to take over and change the school.

I was surprised we didn't see a scene where Gregory told his father he wanted to stay at Abbott instead of joining him in the landscaping business. Maybe they're saving that conversation for a later episode, or did it happen here and I just missed it?

  4. I just finished the first episode and found it kind of disappointing. I don't like Rose or her subplot and really don't like the way Emily Hampshire is playing her. Owen Teale's hotheaded Hutton is also annoying, though I do think it's funny that this seems so like his Game of Thrones role from what I remember. And Baz's plight seems similar to a lot of other sci-fi/horror stories where a mysterious force takes control of its first victim to do its bidding.

I was expecting this to be at least compelling enough to binge over the weekend, but I'm not sure I'll bother even though it's only 6 episodes.

  5. I'm lukewarm on this movie, but I did enjoy a lot of the funny bits. One thing that I don't think I've seen mentioned is that Miles says Gillian Flynn's name wrong. When it happened, I thought it was strange that they would a mistake like that, but then we learn more about Miles and realize that it's really just his character not caring enough to get it right.

    Berenstein Bears

Berenstain Bears 😄, which always seems wrong to me.

Not my favorite episode, but this had a lot of funny moments that have already been mentioned + Barbara hating on Ms. Frizzle and Jacob's horrified expression when the kids accused him of censoring them.

  7. I thought this was a remake of Rig 45 for some reason so planned to skip it because I didn't like the way that story played out. Now that I know it's an original and has a pretty impressive cast, I'm really excited for it. A mystery with potential supernatural elements in an isolated setting is my favorite type of story and exactly what I need after the news of 1899's cancellation.

  8. I don't hate her or anything, but I was baffled by the choice to make Sonoya Mizuno the lead in Devs. Whenever we were told how her ex Jamie wasn't able to get over her or how current boyfriend Sergei felt about her, I kept thinking "Really? Her?" I almost gave up on the show because I found her so flat and dull. I'm glad I kept going because I did enjoy the show despite her, but I wonder how much more I would've liked it with a more compelling actor in the role.

(And this has been bugging me since I posted it, but @Enigma X I apologize if it seemed like I was trying to undermine or argue with your feelings for the Fox family. Someone did something similar to me and it was really annoying. I should've just kept my 2 cents.)

The Fox theatrical/acting family dynasty annoys me. Laurence more so than the rest.

I like Emilia Fox who's been on Silent Witness for years, but also pops up in fun roles on shows like Inside No. 9 and The Wrong Mans. She's also a great audiobook narrator. I don't know what happened to Laurence. Last I checked, he went full-on far-right. It's hard to believe he was once married to Billie Piper.

Unrelated, but I'm bothered by the misspellings in the article.

    A non-Newsmax link: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/celebrity-promoters-sued-over-bored-ape-nft-endorsements-1235279115/

I was a little shocked to see celebrities like Matt Damon, Kevin Hart and especially Gwyneth Paltrow promoting things like NFTs and cryptocurrencies like they weren't already super rich. Why risk your brand promoting things that sound like scams? (Although that might be on brand for Paltrow lol). Anyway, I guess some people can never have enough money.

And we got another piece of the puzzle in the mystery of Alberta's death, too! Oooooooh. Intrigue!

I can't believe Isaac passed up the opportunity to gasp at the reveal along with Alberta.

  12. I didn't realize that GAF movies were popping up on various streaming services (like Catering Christmas on Hulu) until hearing about it on a podcast that broke down the whole situation. I haven't watched any of them, but haven't heard great things.

I've been watching Hallmark movies on Peacock, but am frustrated by how a movie will be available one day and then gone without notice the next. I was able to catch Ghosts of Christmas Always and like a lot of people here, thought it was a lovely surprise and hope it becomes available to stream again. I'm a sucker for a reunion movie, so I'm also looking forward to Christmas Class Reunion coming out this Saturday and just hope it shows up on Peacock too.

  13. I really enjoyed season 5. I don't think there was anything that reached the heights of previous seasons (the video game sketch, Friday NIght Lights parody, Girl You Don't Need Makeup song, etc), but I loved the romcom spoof, Draft Hunter, the Colorado ad, and a few more. I also liked the post-sketch comments from the writers, and seeing Tim Meadows pop up a few times. The songs were a complete miss for me, though, and I ended up fast forwarding through most of them.

I hope we get more episodes.

Plus, a very hot very broody Andreas Pietschmann in period clothes! Hello...

He does tortured hero so well. I don't know if I would've been as interested in this show if he wasn't anchoring it.

  15. The way this played out didn't entirely work for me, at least partly because I'm still confused about what's going on, but I'll definitely watch a second season if they keep going. I wonder if I would've liked it more if I hadn't been comparing it to Dark, which got me much more invested in the various characters and their relationships. Anyway, I still thought this was a great watch and had fun trying to figure out where it was going.

ETA: The 1899 subreddit is worth checking out if you don't mind speculation about future plot points. People pointing out some of the things I missed in the show has made me appreciate it even more.

  16. That was sad, but I think the deaths would've had a stronger impact if we'd seen a bit more of those relationships. We hardly got any reaction after Lucien confessed that he really did love Clémence, we didn't see Ángel and Ramiro's back story, Anker and Iben together much, etc.

I hope we find out why the photo Olek carries around was in one of the inbetween spaces with blood on the ground, and that Maura doesn't turn out to be the one ultimately behind all this. Also, and maybe it's just because I prefer Eyk, but Daniel isn't ringing true to me.

  17. Poor Tove! It was unforgivable of Krester to say something in an earlier episode about her killing someone as if she had done something wrong.

There were some unsettling moments in this episode, like Tove just staring at Clémence after she put on pants and I thought Iben was going to stab Mrs. Wilson at one point. The scene with Ramiro comforting Anker despite not knowing what he was saying was very sweet, though.

Oh, dang! I wasn't expecting Daniel to turn out to be Maura's husband. And just when she and Eyk were getting closer.

  18. That was a hefty exposition dump from Maura at the end, but I enjoy the scenes with her and Eyk so I'm not going to complain.

Anton Lesser is good at playing hissable characters, though it's probably too soon to write him off as a villain since it's still not clear what's actually happening.

  19. The two English guys shoveling coal and arguing about monsters were some welcome comic relief because this episode was intense.

I can't believe it took the first mate to point out that randomly handing out guns to passengers was a bad idea.

Ugh, and I felt bad for Lucian in the last episode. He kind of sucks.

Olek and Jérome better make it through all this.

  20. I didn't find this as grabby as the first episode of Dark but that's a high bar. I'm still very intrigued.

I concur with everyone on the appeal of Andreas Pietschmann, who looks made to brood in a pea coat. I also really like Emily Beecham's Maura.

  21. I share some of Janine's issues so get where she's coming from, but I agree that the show keeps hitting the same beats with her character and it's getting a bit tired. She was annoyingly childish when Gregory was trying to help her with the egg drop and it bugged me that she kept taking Mr. Morton's classroom equipment. But I did laugh when Melissa got impatient with how slowly she was going up the ladder and Janine said it was because she didn't want to get the bends.

Some of my other favorite bits of the episode were during the science discussion when Jacob said that gluten intolerance is just internalized white guilt, Barbara managing to calm herself down after getting a close look at Tameka's mom's lip ring and just smiling serenely, and Gregory getting upset about people doing inaccurate impressions.

  22. Apologies again! I thought maybe I was losing my mind and seeing something that wasn't there since no one else seemed to be commenting on it. I was able to watch the whole season back in July on Prime Video's PBS channel and am still surprised it was available to stream that soon if PBS wasn't planning to start airing it until the fall.
