I used to really like EP, but she's making it more and more difficult all the time.  Even comments about how she hasn't been creatively challenged in a long time, so she focuses on accomplishments behind the scenes.  Way to admit the show has been sucking lately.

This is kind of taking her quote out of context, though. She was saying that when it comes to acting, she hasn't really be challenged in the role of Meredith for a few years - which is fair. She's played the part for over a decade, and Meredith doesn't get extremely challenging storylines anymore. When she talked about focusing on goals behind-the-scenes, that means many things: 1) the quality of the series, as she's taken on a hands-on role the past several years, and 2) the work environment. She's focused on keeping the series great, evolving, having important things to say, etc. Just not so much on challenging Meredith's character / herself as an actress. Which is fine.

  2. For all the complaints... the fans seems to continue loving what Ellen and Krista are delivering. TVLine just put together the rating stats for the 2018/2019 TV season, including Live+7 DVR playback data, and it's incredibly impressive. It's not surprising that ABC granted them a 2-year renewal.

The top 10 shows overall by demo:

1 - NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC (5.9, no change)
    2 - Thursday Night Football, Fox (4.4, +3% vs. CBS/NBC avg.)
    3 - This Is Us, NBC (3.8, -30%) *
    4 - The Big Bang Theory, CBS (3.8, -14%) *
5 - The Masked Singer, Fox (3.8, NA)
    6 - The OT, Fox (3.3, -11%)
    7 - Grey’s Anatomy, ABC (2.9, -12%) *
    8 - Manifest, NBC (2.8, NA) *
    9 - Young Sheldon, CBS (2.6, -21%) *
    10 - The Good Doctor, ABC (2.5, -26%) *

    * = Scripted

Grey's finished season 15 as ABC's #1 series and the #2 drama on all of broadcast, behind only This Is Us. It was the #3 scripted series overall behind only This Is Us and The Big Bang Theory.

This Is Us was down 30% season-to-season, Big Bang was down 14% (boosted by the huge finale numbers) and The Good Doctor was down 26%... Grey's was only down 12%. It had the lowest season-to-season decline of any scripted series in the top 10.

  3. If this succeeded at only one thing, it was making really dislike Teddy. She leaves Tom in her apartment putting together the baby’s crib while she runs off to tell Owen that she loves him? What the fuck? Shouldn’t she have told her current boyfriend before she professed her love to her baby daddy? And she had the audacity to be mad at Owen sleeping with Carina last year? Her and Owen making moon eyes at each other while Tom is back at the apartment was not a good look.

I am, however, pleasantly pleased that they didn’t have Owen profess his love to Amelia. I finally like her character and I want them to keep a good thing going between her and Link. I’m okay if it takes some time, too. They’ve been fun to watch. He brings great, unique energy to the show.

I did love how they portrayed Jo getting treatment. So often on TV and in film, depression is cured by a pep talk or big speech. It’s nice to see them have Jo actually admit to needing help, be supported by her group, and going in to get the care she needs. That was a nice wrap-up to this storyline. I think it was particularly touching that we already started to see Jo picking herself back up (apologizing to Alex, laughing with Link, getting back to work, etc.) but they still had her take the necessary steps. Kudos.

Couldn’t Maggie and Jackson have fallen off a cliff or something? Separate, I like aspects of both of their characters. Together, they’re insufferable. I wish they’d had this argument halfway through the season and then broken up. Jackson being ‘missing’ out in the fog was about as random and yawn-inducing of a cliffhanger as when Weber was electrocuted a few seasons back. Just really silly and unimaginative.

The whole insurance plot is random as hell. Meredith, Alex and Weber all being fired will not last long, and everyone knows it. So as a big “shocker” it kind of fell flat. I appreciate Meredith turning herself in (I really thought they’d have an awful ending and let Weber take the fall) but, again, the consequences can’t be too massive. She’s the star of the show, and the show is a medical drama. She won’t be out of surgery for long, if at all.

Overall, I thought this was a solid but uneven season.  I liked 14 a lot better, but 15 was leagues above the depths of seasons like 11 and 13. Highlights for me were “Silent All These Years”, Amelia and Owen finally breaking up, the introduction of Link (especially his stuff later in the season), Catherine’s surgery and aftermath, and some of the Teddy/Tom build-up. I like how Krista writes longer-term patient arcs, and we’ve actually gotten some good cases and memorable patients out of the last two seasons. I also liked seeing Meredith date in the first half of the season a lot more than I actually enjoy her and DeLuca as a pair. I don't hate them together, I'm just a bit indifferent. I would have liked to see them have a fling and then move on.

What didn’t work? Maggie and Jackson. Too much back and forth between Amelia and Owen. Meredith felt like too much of an after-thought to the writers later in the season; it felt like Amelia and Owen were the leads. The lack of build-up for Teddy/Owen was strange, too. Her decision to leave Tom for him felt way too sudden. I wish that, in general, Teddy had gotten more to do this year. She felt so empowered last season in Berlin when she kicked Owen out, and now to be taking him back just feels regressive. I hope his magical therapy actually has long-term effects and he’s less of an asshole next season.

Finale sounds terribly boring, much like the majority of season 15, which turns out is only a notch or two above the abysmal season 13.

Season 14 was like that surge Richard talked about before Mark died, when you think everything is okay and getting better but it's not.

Hah, I've enjoyed this season way more than either 11 or 13 - those are my two least-favorite by miles, whereas 14 ended by being my favorite since maybe 7 or 8. The difference for me is, I enjoyed pretty much all of this season, but not enough of it really wowed me. The Teddy/Tom/Owen/Amelia story got tired quickly (particularly Amelia/Owen having the same issues over and over), and Meredith was given far little to do especially around mid-season. I do find the press release for the finale to be shockingly low-key, though.

  5. We should have a full press release this week, but the short synopsis for the finale is here:

15x25 - "Jump Into The Fog" - As fog begins to cover Seattle, the doctors must navigate through personal complications. Meredith and Alex attempt to save Gus. Levi talks some sense into a struggling Nico.

Surprised there's no mention of Teddy giving birth, but that may be in the longer release. I'm guessing the fog hits while Maggie and Jackson are camping.

  6. I don't see it being a HUGE disaster finale like, say, the shooting or the fire or the plane crash. I think it will be more along the lines of the last few finales, where there's a lot going on but it's a mix of drama/comedy/teases for next season. Our cliffhangers last year were: Teddy being pregnant, Jo potentially leaving for her fellowship, and... that's really it, actually. Though, last year they had to focus a lot on wrapping up the April/Arizona stories and they had their 'big' episode the week before with April's accident.

I'm thinking we can expect: Teddy giving birth, some type of accident with Jackson/Maggie in the woods, a big focus on the medical cases unless they're wrapped up in 15x23 (Alex's kid with rare blood, and the non-binary patient and their mother), and whatever the storyline is that has to do with Catherine/Bailey looking into a hospital insurance issue.

  7. It's normal for us to have no press release for the finale yet. They usually stay two episodes ahead, and the PR for 15x23 just came out today.

Caterina mentioned to TVLine that it's a "fall-down-and-explode" kind of episode (whatever that means?) but also that her storyline is funny and ridiculous and like a romantic comedy. She said there's tonally a lot of levity in the last one, like much of the season so far. I really have no clue what will go down, but I'd wager we'll get a cliffhanger at the end of 15x23. Teddy giving birth seems to be the only assurance.

  8. 15x24 - Drawn To The Blood – Alex tries desperately to save his patient Gus while he waits for a severely agoraphobic blood donor to arrive from London. Jo reveals to Meredith why she’s been so down, while Catherine and Bailey hold a meeting to get down to the bottom of an insurance issue. Meanwhile, Maggie and Jackson go camping.

So... are we going to get a Maggie/Jackson in-the-woods crisis for the finale? They haven't done bear attacks yet. (Joking. Kind of.)

“Good Shepard” was the episode to bring back Sara. It could have been her case and she called in Amy and Linc.

I think it'd actually have been the worst episode to bring her back. She had no real relationship with Amelia and that episode was entirely focused on Amelia's arc. If they bring Callie back, it has to be either with a big Callie-focused story or have her interacting with Meredith, Alex, Richard, Bailey.

  10. Given the awful ratings, it seems likely that Madam Secretary will be canceled this year. I wonder if Krista will be able to lure Sara Ramirez back for an episode or arc next year once she's out of work. I feel like it'd be tougher to get Jessica Capshaw back given how things ended, but I'd love to see Callie return even if it's just for one episode. Krista seems to love callbacks/bringing back old characters. Over the past two seasons, she's brought back Thatcher, Mama Shepherd, Nancy, Olive (Richard's sponsor), Nurse Olivia, Ellis (multiple times), Matthew, Teddy, etc.

Have we ever seen either of these sisters before? It seems strange that we'd just now be meeting two of Derek's sisters 15 seasons in.

Yes, we met Nancy (Embeth Davidtz) in season 3. Liz (Neve Campbell), who wasn't in this episode, was in season 9. Kate is the only one we hadn't met before.

I just don’t think it is plausible- like much of the show though. Like you have this warm supportive family, but the mom pushes away the youngest child during trauma because she reminds her of her father. I think it contradicts what we’ve seen and heard of the character prior to this point.

It's very plausible, especially in the aftermath of trauma. It's quite common for people (even great parents) to unconsciously project when they're dealing with grief. And it's not like they're suddenly saying that Amelia's mom never loved or cared for her, simply that she allowed Derek to do a lot of the heavy lifting, particularly when things got tough.

We've never really been led to believe that Amelia had a great relationship with anyone in her family. She didn't speak to Derek for years until he got shot, she was incredibly troubled during her youth, and even recently her mom + sisters skipped out on her wedding and have had seemingly no real contact with her since Derek's funeral.

Also, I find the whole “Derek had to raise Amelia” to be retcon to justify Amelia’s actions. When Derek describes his family in the early years, it was about them being close knit, how they would drop everything if he was having surgery, etc. They practically took Mark in because his parents were neglectful emotionally. Now that the series has gone on for long enough that they feel out of plot lines, they were all awful except Derek and the woman who took in an extra “son” who needed love pushed her daughter away.

I always want to ignore the inconsistencies to just enjoy the show, but I can’t when it seems so obvious that the writers are changing things to suit whatever their storyline of the week is. It’s been especially bad this season- Jo’s backstory, Meredith’s log surgery, etc.

She pushed Amelia away for a very specific reason - because she reminded her of their father. That makes sense to me. And it's not like they're suddenly saying that Amelia was forced out, just that emotionally her mother was probably cold to her when she needed her the most. That doesn't really have anything to do with them letting Mark in (if anything, it adds to it - Amelia saw her mother embracing even Derek's friend, meanwhile she didn't get the love/understanding that she needed).

  13. You can dig up TONS of posts of me going on and on just a few years ago about how badly I wanted Amelia off the show. For a while, she was by far my least favorite character (seasons 11 - 13). Krista really did wonders with that brain tumor, because Amelia has been one of my favorite parts of this season and I really enjoyed this episode.

First off, Link is great. I hope they up him to a series regular next year. I like that they haven't forced him down our throats by making him a prominent character right away, but rather have slowly developed his relationships with Jo, Amelia, etc.

Also, keep Owen away from Amelia forever. Her and Link have great, fun chemistry, and I like that they aren't rushing it or glossing over important things. It's been nice to see a relationship develop over the course of several episodes, rather than just HAPPEN and then suddenly the characters are in love. It's also just so great to see Amelia happy with Link rather than the constant doom & gloom with Owen.

I appreciated the lighter tone, as the last few weeks have been a bit heavy and I'm sure the rest of the season will be too. They still managed to be very effective + include some great character moments. Amelia and her mom's final scene together was fantastic - Tyne Daly is amazing. It was nice that, unlike when episodes have to fit in 5 or 6 storylines, that scene got to really breathe and not feel cut short.

I would love if they got Tyne to come back for an episode or two next year. As the doctors get older, I think it's been really interesting to see the writers explore their parental relationships and how those have affected their lives as adults. It's definitely been a huge theme this season between Catherine being ill, Jo finally meeting her mom, Alex having normal, healthy interactions with his mother, Meredith reuniting with Thatcher on his deathbed, and now Amelia and her mom reconnecting here.

Another social justice issue front and center. At this point they're just bashing us over the head with them and don't even try to be subtle anymore.

And what have they done with Meredith? She's Supersurgeon, Superwoman and supposedly also Supermom, even though we never see the children. I miss when Meredith used to be flawed and relatable. It's great that she's such a good surgeon now, but why does she have to be a flawless and perfect one? She's winning awards, breaking records and apparently is beyond screwing up or even just making mistakes at this point. She's become overly confident in everything she does. The only thing that jeopardizes her career these days is being a good person who cares about asylum seekers. Sure. Great.

But maybe this is still better compared to what they did with her in s11-13. She was pretty unlikable duting those seasons, but it was never properly addressed and she got away with it.

They've had undocumented patients seeking treatment before. Izzie dealt with one in season 1. It's not just a social justice issue, it's real life.

Not to mention it goes completely against her characterization from these past two years (which goes against the s11-13 characterization which went against the s9-10 characterization ad fucking infinitum.)  Anyway, this time last season Jo was getting on Alex because he was ignoring her about his bank balance and she gave him a long speech about how they weren't going to do this anymore, they were going to talk like adults.  And when she proposed she mentioned always running but that now she didn't have to because she was finally home and with someone she trusted, blah blah blah.

These writers don't watch their own show.

Dealing with trauma defies logic. Wanting to be open and honest about banking is very different than discussing the fact that you're the product of rape. Jo and Alex have been much more communicative and open the past two seasons, but this is something else. She's probably dealing with the intense fear that people will look at her differently when they discover that her father raped her mother. Beyond that, it's just a lot to deal with internally. She had an idea of her mom in her head all these years that turned out to be way off. Falling into a depression because of that doesn't necessarily make her character inconsistent. What matters now is how Alex deals with it (and I think he's been going about it the right way, first telling her that nothing could change his opinion of her, and then asking Link to try).

  16. This was a so-so episode that was pretty much just set-up for the rest of the season. I don't want Teddy and Owen together, but I thought Meghan's final scene, where she pointed out how fucked up Owen is, was needed. Owen has been an asshole who makes awful life decisions since he joined the show. It was nice that they referred to how far back this goes - dumping his ex-fiance over Email, the way he treated Cristina, the back-and-forth with Amelia and Teddy last year, etc. I've always felt like Owen had a lot of great qualities as a character, but his lack of growth has been so annoying. He and Amelia have been going in circles for 5 years. I like that Amelia is having a fun, care-free thing with Link, and I'd be happy to see Owen develop something similar with someone else. Going to therapy is a (long-overdue) good start.

Seems like Alex's patient will be around for a few episodes, probably through the end of the season. I love seeing him work with kids, and excel as a doctor, so I'm excited about that. The storyline with Jo was something that I worried they'd wrap up immediately, so I'm glad that isn't the case. It was smart (and super mature) of Alex to reach out to Link. If Jo isn't ready to talk to Alex, he did the next best thing by trying to find someone that she may open up to. I really feel for Jo, and her speech about always leaving people made me sad for her. I'm interested to see how this progresses through the final few episodes.

Meredith needs an interesting storyline, STAT. I don't mind her and DeLuca having a cute little fling, but having her storylines all be based solely around him ain't it for me. We didn't need Richard's approval. I don't mind DeLuca and I'm fine with seeing him develop more as a surgeon, but this was forced.

Given that we have only 5 episodes left, one of which is solely based on Amelia/Link going to New York, it's interesting how little we know about what's to come. By this time last year, we know that we had a Jolex wedding coming up and that both April and Arizona would be leaving. Right now, all we know about the final 4 episodes is that Owen will be going to therapy and Jo's storyline is ongoing.

Oh? Where does it say that.

Camilla and Krista mentioned it in several post-episode interviews. Basically, Krista had a story planned, that Camilla knew about, but then the Blasey Ford testimony happened and Camilla emailed Krista saying, 'What if Jo was the product of rape?'. Unbenknownst to her, also spurred by the Ford testimony, Krista had already approached the writers about doing a consent-themed episode. So it fell together.

This is one of several interviews where Camilla discusses it.
