  1. This has been driving me nuts: does anyone else recognize Jackie from another reality show a few years ago, or someone who looks exactly like her?

She has classic looks. There are a good number of women with similar features.

  2. In regards to having the girl say they only had 35,000 to pay off a 53,000 debt. That is quite common and perfectly legal to do so.

The supplier did every what other company will do when faced with the prospect of getting payment on a debt that was never thought never going to be paid. They will take the money.

When a company is owed money for a debt there are four options they can take.

    1. Is legal options but that can often cost more then the debt would be and often result in nothing close to amount of debt. So considered a lose lose.

    2. Forget getting it or forgive the debt. This occurs by way two ways.

    a. By law debts are erased when certain events happen such as the debt holder dying. By law the family members etc cannot be made to pay the debt of the dead person. This doesn't stop certain debt collection agencies from going after family members to get debts paid off.

    b. The company decides it will never get the money owed to them and just write it completely off as a loss.

    3. Sell the debt to a debt collection agency for pennies on the dollar who will then try to get the full amount for the debt collection agency often restorting to harassment and other illegal things. So the fish supplier would have gotten 5300 bucks.

    4. Take half or more then half of the debt when offered. Option 4 is considered the best option all around because depending upon margins they could still make a profit or break even on what was paid of the debt.

  3. As for why Marcus doesn't perform due diligence he has two very good  reasons.

    1. The money for him is small potatoes. A million dollars to put in a business when he has over 2 billion dollars cash on hand is a nothing burger. What matters is his time. He wants everything setup on the path of success and getting his money back then making a profit in a month.

    2. Time to perform the background checks, accounting etc is often four to six months. When a business needs immediate cash to avoid closing the doors within a week or a month,Marcus considers there is no time to waste on due diligence because there will be no business to be done.

In regards as to why Marcus brought up the BMW and not the handbag.

    1. Handbags are a one time expensive unlike a BMW that constantly requires payments as well as other expenses. unless the daughter was using company money to buy expensive handbags then the expense is a nothing burger.

    2. You can buy real brand new Louie Vutton handbags, Gucci stuff dirt cheap if you look around for a while.

    3. Knockoffs, real brands that look similar exist.

    4. You can buy used or even fairly brand new ones dirt cheap often at thrift shops, goodwills around the country for forty bucks.

    5. The handbag is personal property. BMW money could have been used to get a much cheaper car or van that could be used to pick up supplies to save shipping costs, or make deliveries to earn money.

    6. Marcus didn't know about the boat but notice he asked if it was used to fish. A fishing boat if run properly could bring in quite a bit of money or save a lot of money versus getting the fish from suppliers.

  4. Not odd at all. They had schemed to try to take advantage of Marcus. Those two were clearly full of themselves and thought that everybody else was wrong. No research and development prior to production of a toy? They just developed things they liked rather then see what would sell to the market.

  5. That fight wasn't in the back office. It was out in the floor when Dan was pricing stuff.

Don't know what yelp reviews you read but overwhelming they are positive. http://www.yelp.com/biz/amazing-grapes-wine-store-rancho-santa-margarita

Also those two photos didn't look like Dan who they called the beer guy in that little review nor the actual Beer guy.

There is an Amazing Grapes in New Jersey that does have a band playing there.

  6. Diluting Dane's shares was likely the cheapest and quickest as well as least messiest option to get him out of the way. Since this wouldn't be a publicly traded company there would be no buying of shares unless he agreed to do so.

  7. You can actually watch all 4 episodes, plus some bonuses, on their YouTube channel here:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq-L_SNayTDy-rOLZPtY3cw

Although I don't know why you'd want to. It's an amateurish take on candid reality shows and I couldn't make it through the 5 minutes of scale-gate. But it was pretty clear that Dane does not play well with others even then.

Don't know if I will watch it but Dane clearly took to heart the book the Four hour work week. Put in four hours doing nothing and think you are entitled to all the rewards of the business, Thinking about possibly ordering some Sweet Pete candy when I got extra money. They got some sour stuff and perhaps this place has some very sour stuff. Mass produced stuff   has no comparison to hand made candy in terms of taste. http://www.sweetpetescandy.com/collections/specials/products/the-profit-deal i could always use a free shirt!

  8. A lot of what needed to be done at the pie shop was pretty obvious. Even though the guy was an emotional mess - which brought out a bunch of assholish tendencies - I felt like he really did give a shit about what the business did and the impact it had on the employees (unlike the Amazing Grapes owners). I can imagine the whole thing just grew bigger and more out of hand than he imagined and he could only address it with "sell more stuff."

I was glad Marcus changed the recipe, because after hearing how that pie was made originally, I surely would have resented throwing four bucks away for one piece. I also thought it was smart to use Jim's crust. But the new logo - ugly and already dated, in my opinion. And like camom above stated, I thought it was a different lime from a key lime. I thought Marcus should have thrown Jim a bone and used the old logo, or a riff on the old logo, because I thought the old logo was actually pretty good. It would have made Jim pleased to win one small battle.

I was a bit confused about the chefs. I understand trying to get a new proprietary recipe, but it seemed like they came up with some really complicated stuff that took the pie into a whole new direction. I can see maybe doing an alternative version or something, but there needed to be a basic key lime pie to draw people in - not something loaded with chocolate or in a jar. My feeling is if you're doing a key lime pie business, you need at least a classic version of the pie to choose on the menu.

I think that was just to get ideas out there and then test those three to see what elements worked and didn't then change as needed.

As for the logo a key lime is kind of hard to draw and make good on a logo. 640px-Citrus_aurantiifolia_of_Kadavoor.j

Unattractive isn't it?. Plus people think of limes as being completely round. Which is due to the most common lime used which is the Persian Lime. Persian_lime.jpg

  9.

Amazing how many of these companies don't have an inventory process.

Its pretty stand how many small businesses don't want to do inventory checks and have a system. Inventory systems go back thousands of years. We have the tablets in stone that show it!

Too bad she was so simple minded.  She could have cashed in big time if she was not so stupid.

She listened to emotions and not logic. She was ready to toss out 50% of sales because the ex girlfriend worked at a location. Just let the past go and concentrate on the future then you can have your satisfication instead of putting on a show that in your mind makes you look right while the employees actually think you are damn crazy and wondering where they are going to get a new job.

  10.

Anyway, my observation is: in my entire lifetime living in the US, no one has created new curse words. Considering how most people understand that some words you don't say in certain settings, what might be the end result of opening the gates on these remaining TV taboo words?

Well we bring back what sounds like non curse words as curse words. For instance in the 1920s Applesauce was an expletive.

Bimbo also used to mean a strong guy.

This guy was supposedly a business consultant, yet couldn't see that his own company was losing money with every bottle sold.

I think he did and didn't want to work on the business because he knew the other guy wouldn't make the changes. Hence why he was willing to be silent and reap the benefits. If Marcus had offered to buy him out he may have done that as well.

the 25% ownership stake given to the "management team."

Odds are the papers detailed that more by way of bylaws etc. It would take an hour or more to spell it out verbally. Odds are it was just divided up so if the business did great everybody got a nice chunk so everyone wants to do the best since that way everyone gets more money.

I felt Brian decided to be "proactive" when he saw that the long-time employees were being nicely rewarded for basically running Greg's business all that time. I think he wanted to be part of the group and figured his "proactivity" would be embraced by Marcus. But as it was, he stepped out of bounds and looked like he was making poor choices. I do think Marcus was a bit over the top in his reaction, however.

That may be because of what Brian told the mayor and the mayor talked to the press or somebody important. Brian should have just said there are going to be things done and if you want more info talk to Marcus. Instead he babbled everything he heard which may or not be changed which for pr purposes is bad.

I was kind of put off by Dan.  When the owner was telling him they should price the wine higher, Dan didn't even try to explain his reasoning.  He just basically said, "You're not the boss of me!"

He did explain. He said they were priced to move and make the store profit by moving it out fast. Dan was the reason the place made 2 million dollars a sale a year yet had no inventory control or pricing control under Greg. Now he could  do what needed to be done to make it a 4 million dollar a year. For  Greg to now come in and talk about the prices just ticked Dan off. Greg by this time had no authority hence he shouldn't have been there.

  11. Whoa, now that's interesting!  The show also features "sometimes unpredictable, yet good-natured partners, staff and customers." Dane was part of the cast, too!  I'm off to see if I can track down any episodes online--this should be interesting, given what we were shown on "The Profit."

I found the videos online. http://ytchannelembed.com/videos/watch/dJkCGHcGhwk#.VNoaT_nF_To Sweet Pete's does have a online site in which you can order stuff and they how to make candy videos. The videos were hosted on a site that also has the Sweet pete show, It was apparently11 episodes that aired on local tv in Jacksonville Florida. Dane was the Politician of Candy,

As for the getting out issue the recipes were important to Pete because of how much would be needed to done to rework them so Dane couldn't sue him. As for why they went with Dane it sounded like they had little if any choice because setting up a shop can cost easily 50,000 or more and if you don't have that money then no go. Then you got rent, inventory you have to buy etc. Dane offered them a building and some setup would in their situation sounded like the best thing especially if  he was to contribute and work as a partner.

  12. I think Marcus will have the last laugh. Skullduggery by having an anti-Nascar bias ruin a deal among other idiocy means that their creditors will eventually get enraged at not getting paid and cause the company to go bankrupt and everything be sold off. Marcus could wind up buying the patents for the marble racers etc and doing the deals with Nascar and have 100% of the money.

If you didn't like the Nascar fan base its still one of the largest customer bases who is into cars and its brand has name recognition in stores. So having Nascar brand on your toy racers gets you shelf space next to Mattel and people will notice you and buy your cars even if they don't watch Nascar.

Hell having Nascar on the cars could have made Mattel license their stuff to put in their track racing sets. The deal with Nascar could have wiped out their debt or a big chunk and made the banks very happy to extend more credit since it looks like the company is on the right track.

  13. That's a very good point. How did this never occur to me before?

"I still think there's something slightly weird about the progression as we saw it.  Why is it that the first time we see Marcus mention Nascar, the owner has already discussed it with buyers?  And Marcus seemed to accept that as true, but was dismissive of it.  I don't understand why the Toys R Us buyer wouldn't want Nascar-branded products. But if that's true, it is a big deal.

All of which is dwarfed by the fact that the guys were complete asses (repeatedly) who went back on their word.  I'm glad Marcus got out and didn't lose too much money. But I don't quite trust the editing, either."

I think the guy just hated Nascar and lied about matters. Also one rep doesn't make a company. You would contact other company reps and other people in the company. Plus Nascar stuff  is sold in http://www.toysrus.com/products/nascar-fan-shop-sporting-goods-C32192786.jsp. Marcus would known that  hence why he thought the guy was lying and just hated Nascar. Note he also claimed to have an order about those terrible cardboard toys when he really didn't have one. Marcus was incredibly tolerant and he put in the clause  about salary for good reason since   that family would have just sunk the profits into their own pocket.

  14.  "Near the beginning, Marcus was told that the father was the majority shareholder.

And isn't it crazy to go into production of new toys without asking kids if they *like* the toys?

One more thing - can I borrow that credit card?   :)"

The father sounds like he was just majority in name only till he spoke up. He let the other two run things.

Yes it is  crazy to go into toy production without any research and development involving test audiences and to see if there is anything already like it or close to it.

There are a number of black credit cards used by very rich people for multimillion dollar purchases.
