  1. Haven’t had a chance to read through all the post ep comments yet but did read the pre and live ones (wish I could join in but live in Australia!), the couple of pages I’ve read though shows me that we had similar reactions:

    • didn’t understand wtf was happening for most of it - I thought my TV was messing up because it was so hard to see anything

    • incredibly boring, I kept checking how long there was left to go, the ep was only about 60 mins, can’t imagine having to watch it stretched out to 1.5 hours due to ads

    • those ‘arty’ close up face shots were so stupid and pretentious

    • I had to keep rewatching the very start of it trying to work out the timing based on Rick’s beard because these time jumps have made it so utterly confusing

    • I had NO idea that Carl was bitten, when a few of you speculated that last week I thought you were mad! Sorry about that! ?

    • I actually cried when we found out Carl *had* been bitten, I love Carl, he’s so sweet, brave and kind and I feel very sad for Rick. I still care enough about them that it’s heartbreaking. I woke up this morning and remembered and felt sad. Both Carl and Rick deserve better. WE deserve better.

    • There was a lot of foreshadowing for Carl but I thought they were red herrings - I was worried Michonne was going to be the one to die

    • I’m angry about Carl dying as, like many people (even the actors), I thought the last season would reveal that this was never Rick’s story but Carl’s -I just don’t see any point at all now to the show, it’s completely nihilistic, there is no hope whatsoever. I don’t see why Rick would want to go on after this, he was only ever pushing on for Carl - he doesn’t have the same connection with Judith, I don’t think because she’s likely Shane’s but just because of the timing of her birth - so why would he keep going? It’s this completely fucked world with no joy at all, nothing to look forward to just more cruelty and hardships and now he doesn’t even have his son to protect and watch grow. I don’t think Michonne makes it worth him wanting to live because he’ll most likely lose her in some horrific way just like most other people he’s loved. I don’t want to see Rick so broken by losing Carl, this show is already depressing enough, now they’ve taken one little glimmer of hope that he might some sort of peace and happiness

    • I hate, hate, hate Scott Gimple, he’s an absolute no talent arrogant idiot with no nuance, no understanding of his audience and no respect for the fans of this show. I don’t think I’ll over get over HBO passing on TWD, imagine what a show it could have been with a decent budget and a talented showrunner

Anyone else planning on quitting this show after the mid-season finale? I'm seriously considering it.

If Judith gets killed I think I’m out, that would be fucked up killing a TV baby for shock value. If not then I’m doomed to stay in for as long AL is there as I’m ride or die for him and I think 99.99% that Rick will live til at least the second or third last episode. My life just flashed before my eyes ?

I always see shows through to the bitter end, I’ve sat through some really shitty finales ???.

  4. I’m so surprised there is an overwhelming positive response to this episode on this board as well as in the reviews! I’m usually in the majority here but not this time - I thought the ep was appalling, the worst one this season (which is quite a feat). I was so so bored, there was no tension because of the stupid time jumps which break any momentum; Zeke has become totally annoying with his affectations - hopefully they’ll be toned done now that he’s suffered such a devastating loss; all The Kingdom’s warriors were killed which is so frustrating as it is the only likeable, functional and productive society we’ve come across; and the music through the ep was SO weird! It really took me out of the show, I thought there would have been lots of chatter about it here. It didn’t fit with the usually TWD sound and reminded me of the original Planet of the Apes movie score which was terrific in that film in the 70’s but is incredibly dated now. The only thing that made the ep bearable for me was the cameo by Rick because any ep without Rick sucks for me but the Rick and Daryl bit was bizarre, almost a parody of itself.

I’m so sad that one of my all time favourite shows has become a steaming pile of poo ?, I used to hang out for 1pm on Mondays (I’m in Australia) but now I struggle to remember it’s on; I used to watch the episode the minute it was available then come straight on here and read all your comments in both the pre/during thread and post thread then I would rewatch the episode then watch Talking Dead then Knocking Dead. Now I just about manage to get through the episode and that’s with lots of checking to see how long there is to go. Such a shame.

The Walking Dead is back doing what it does best: being entertaining enough for the most part, but continuing to fall short of what it is expected of it and what TPTB likely consider their show to be.

I mean, sure, the build up to the "war" was interesting and I was curious to see how everyone fit in it, but then it all just leads to them hiding behind panels, while Negan swaggers out in the open and rambles on again like Jeffery Dean Morgan would actually die if he quit speaking, while all of his lieutenants just hang out and smirk.  But Rick, Maggie, and crew don't kill them for.... reasons, I guess?  Yeah, yeah, even if Negan does die, I understand that it would not be the end of the Saviors, but his death (and possibly his lackeys) would still be a huge blow, and the advantage they need.  Sometimes the simplest solution works.  Really, all of this could have worked if they did have him include some kind of human shield and that's why no one wanted to take a shot.

This is what makes it so so annoying, all TPTB needed to do was make that tiny change and it would made it completely plausible.

But how would they really know that shooting Negan dead would make all of the other Saviors surrender? They've literally SEEN how the Saviors get brainwashed.

I don't think it really matters though, they should have just killed him regardless, even if the others didn't surrender Negan has to be put down for what he did to Glenn and Abraham and for terrorising all the other groups, including some of his own people. If this was a rational show they would have immediately shot all of the Saviours who stepped out sans Dwight and Eugene. (I think Dwight has earnt a second chance and it would be hard for them to kill Eugene even after his betrayal). Then they could have decided what to do with the rank and file Saviours and prisoners. There was no benefit whatsoever to not immediately killing Negan.

The writing has been really shaky this year. It's like they're trying to insert some comic relief and it's falling flat. IIRC, Davos made that comment in response to Missandei's explanation about marriage and bastards, which really has no relevance to a middle aged man who's not married and who's only son is dead.

I'd have to rewatch up be sure but I thought it was when she gave her speech about all the slaves that Dany freed and the other things she's done that have impressed Missendei which supported her statement that Dany is the Queen they chose.

  8. Brilliant episode for all the reasons that the many posts here have already discussed.

I cried when Arya finally got back to Winterfell and when she reunited with Sansa. The fight scene with Brienne was awesome and it was great that such a massively popular show depicted a duel between two females with the same earnestness that they would two male characters.

My main quibble with this episode was when Missandei said that Dany was the Queen they chose - Davos made the quip about changing sides but I assumed he was going to say and Jon is the King the North chose, I can't understand why he didn't make that retort. I thought it was casting unearned shade onto Jon who has been the most selfless character in the entire show, time and again he has voluntarily faced death, has not wavered in his desire to pull together an army to defeat the real enemy, the white walkers, and has not wanted accolades for his courage. Davos knows all this - and that Jon was even killed by his own men for his efforts! - so to dismiss Jon like this (even in a joking manner) didn't feel true to Davos.

I'm blind to the chemistry between Jon and Dany, though I admit I am biased as I dislike Dany with all her entitlement and million titles. I never thought they'd go there since it seems too obvious but looks like I might be wrong given how other posters have interpreted their scenes.

I'll be surprised if Jaime is taken hostage as it's already been done, I actually think that Tyrion might rescue him. I really want to see a reunion between the two, I felt so sad for Tyrion watching his conflict with the battle as a whole and then his fear when Jaime went on his suicide mission. Speaking of, I believe that Jaime saw the opportunity to kill Dany knowing it was incredibly unlikely he'd make it and was risking his life but decided to take the chance anyway given what he said to Bronn earlier about not abandoning his men.

This. I stopped watching last night after he gave her the book and only finished it this morning and it it occurred to me that she's at most 17 (tho Chris was 16 and I thought they were the same age) and he's at least 24. It's creepy. I don't know what the writers are thinking.

I don't like the route they're going with Nick and Alicia.

I thought Alicia was 17/18 in the premiere as she was going to college the following year and didn't she have a birthday sometime in season 1 or am I making all that up?! If so though she could be 19, her hooking up with a 24 year old is in that scenario is ok in my book, usually I'm pretty sensitive to teens being with someone over a couple of years older than them but they all seem older now that they've gone through such an extreme experience.

I don't understand why book talk is so allowed and freely used here.  I don't think people understand if we haven't read the book yet we don't want to know anything about it.  Some people mention the book  every single time they post.

I read Big Little Lies before the show premiered, and now that I'm on the other side of things, I totally get how annoying it is for people who haven't read the book.  I have to quickly skip over every time you guys post about it.

ITA, it's been annoying me to no end and shouldn't be in here - TV/movie adaptations are meant to stand alone from the source material, it really doesn't matter what's in the book if something different is coming across on the screen. I've read THT (and Big Little Lies!) which is why I haven't been posting as I was worried I'd give something away. Happens in the GOT/TWD forums as well, I don't know why people can't stick to the book threads to debate source vs adaptation ?.

  12. Another great, heartbreaking episode.

Re the dinner party, I assumed that Serena had not discussed her intention to address the guests but chose to do so because the Ambassador was female. This way she could pretend that women did still have respect and some power in Gilead - the Ambassador had called the Wives 'the silent part of the room' the night before at Serena's home. Serena then decided to have the children to come in after the guests as a woman speaking publicly and the child parade were both good 'showbusiness'.

That's the first time I've seen Nick wear an earpiece - I don't think he has in the past? If so, that is also the first time we have seen any technology being used in the current timeline.

That would work because Perth is 3 hours behind us (I'm in Sydney and Melbourne is in the same time zone) in summer so that would make it 7.35am in Perth. Usually they are only 2 hours behind but daylight saving adds an extra hour.

My concept of time is so off, with these episodes.  How pregnant is Maggie supposed to be?  Seems like forever since they found out.  Or was all this supposed to have happened in a month or two?    I just feel like, when I see Maggie, she ought to be looking pregnant by now.  But I have no idea how much time has gone by in their world.  This season has seemed exceedingly long in mine.  lol   I'm very glad to see some action though!

This annoys me so much! It feels like she's been pregnant for 3 years.

Now this is the kind of Negan appearance I can get behind... when he's treated like how many people prefer the presence of obnoxious children - seen and not heard.

So true! Really wish she'd just shot him and all Saviours cheer and immediately ask all the neighboring groups over for a sausage sizzle.

I found myself getting a wee bit irritated at the whole "Rosita was with a lot of guys so she could stay safe and learn stuff" and then I had to check myself, hard. She's not the first woman in the history of the world who has used her attractiveness to stay ahead, and she won't be the last. And being totally honest with myself, I would do the same thing. I DID like that the writers let her own in on her own terms, too, by saying she slept with the guys for her own wants.

Also, am I the only who snickered when Gregory was threatening Jesus and thinking "Dude, you do NOT want to threaten someone named Jesus."

What she did was smart and I would also do whatever it took post-apocalypse and now she's at the point where she's acquired the skills necessary to look after herself and others.

If anyone deserves that vile muck, he does. Just before someone kills him. Slowly. Oh, I know - put Eugene's poison pill in Simon's Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill! Guaranteed he'll never notice it in that stuff

Agree, although I was a little shocked at THIS show allowing someone to say they had sex for reasons other than true and undying love or because they're kinky like Negan and his harem. I liked it, and yeah - I admit I'd do the same thing. That's why she hooked up with Ol' Dolphin Smooth, the soldier. If you're going to hook up with someone in an apocalypse where the pickings are slim, may as well be someone who knows how protect and fight.

I was glad too! One of the most ridiculous things about this show is the lack of sex for most of the characters.

I know Maggie is loved by most.  Wouldn't it have been almost as good if Negan had bashed in Maggie's head instead of Glenn's and then we could all be watching Glenn be devastated and traumatized this season and taking bets on when he'd wake up and bounce back to take his revenge?

    Do over.

I miss Glenn so much, even more than I thought I would. It's really decreased the enjoyment of the show for me, I would much rather it had been Maggie even though I really like her.

  15. That nearly sent me into a coma, it was so so boring. I say it nearly episode but why they think only showing one storyline per episode is a great way of doing things is beyond me. Clearly just a cost cutting measure. Ugh!

  17. I thought that was a really good episode, easily my favourite non-Rick episode all season. It is frustrating that both Benjamin and Richard are dead as most of us assumed would happen as soon as we met them but it was done in an effective way. Really wish that the Saviour leader had just turned around and shot Rat Face when he found out Benjamin had died. I was hoping that we could have hung on to Benjamin as it was nice to have someone (along with Tara) who is not yet totally jaded. Seeing the extent of Morgan's PTSD was enlightening and very well done - and should have been communicated to us two seasons ago so we could have been more empathetic to his pacifist stance. I liked that Carol now knows what happened to Glenn and am looking forward to her storyline integrating with CBDs again.

I think Eugene is working something from the inside and will die a violent death in the finale to help Rick's group.  This is pure speculation on my part, so I am not spoiler tagging it.  Eugene was born a cowherd, but will die a hero.

It will be too bad...he really could have done something with a traveling Mr. Wizard show.

I also think he's working the inside but I so hope he doesn't die. I'd like him to play an integral part in the takedown and be able to reap the rewards.

I don't know why they stay at Alexandria.  This whole ramp-up to some big fight feels like a bunch of territorial idiots fighting over a worthless pile of rocks.  After a run-in with Negan I'd pack my bags and keep moving.  There are other planned communities with defensible perimeters farther north (or west or wherever).  Go find one that isn't being menaced by a cartoon villain with a baseball bat.

I would have laughed if straight after the Glenn and Abe death CBD got back to ASZ, packed up and hightailed it out of there - to hell with Daryl, Sasha, Maggie and the ASZ-ers. And they never spoke about them again, just like Maggie with Beth.

    On 3/4/2017 at 11:05 AM, Raven1707 said:

Are you referring to this scene from Episode 611, "Knots Untie"?

Daryl: Now, hold up. So, they show up, they kill a kid, and you give them half of everything? These dicks just got a good story. The bogeyman, he ain’t shit.
Jesus: Well, how do you know?
Abraham: A month ago, we took his guys out PDQ. Left them in pieces and puddles.
Daryl: You know, we’ll do it. If we go get your man back, kill Negan, take out his boys, will you hook us up? We want food, medicine, and one of them cows.
(Jesus looks from Daryl to Rick)

Rick: Confrontation’s never been something we’ve had trouble with.
Jesus: (considering) I’ll take it to Gregory.

This frustrates me so much when Rick is being blamed for every single wrong decision! Daryl offered their services as mercenaries and then everyone agreed except Morgan when they took it back to ASZ. But so many viewers seem to forget that.

I am sooooo happy I watched the Oscars instead of this episode; the Oscars had more suspense and the ending was way more thrilling!  I caught a repeat after the Oscars and it was heartbreaking to see so many people with so little invested in their jobs; everyone's just going through the motions.  I think the doctor was actually screaming for joy that he was free of all of the bullshit.

JDM is committing career suicide.  I think a lot of the actors careers are basically over thanks to this show.  Andrew Lincoln is lucky he has that Jethro Tull money coming in because he's ALWAYS going to be Rick Grimes.  MMB didn't have much of a career before so I don't think it will matter either way.  Lennie had a pretty good resume before so he won't have to worry too much.  Norman Reedus also worked a lot before TWD; Daryl is just one of the many greasy, redneck characters he's played.  Danai's fortunate because she's got her theatrical career going and some high-profile films coming up, which is great since Michonne is turning out to be less than the career-making gig it SHOULD have been.  I can't think of the last time that Michonne actually spoke about what SHE wanted or what SHE was feeling.  Michonne is there to prop Rick and an amazing actor is being wasted.

Andrew Lincoln was well known in the U.K. prior to TWD as he has been in popular, critically acclaimed TV series. I had a shock seeing Egg (This Life) and Simon (Teachers) being a badass! I'm the same age as AL and it feels like he's always been around - I looked him up on wiki and his first TV role was at 21 so a lot of Gen X-ers on the other side of the pond have grown up with him. From what I've read, he doesn't want to work when TWD is in hiatus so he can spend time with his family - although I think he did a play last year. I doubt he'll ever be short of work.

The only one who I think is now typecast is NR because Daryl is such a cult figure (kind of like Henry Winkler forever being Fonzie). I wonder though if he could care less as to achieve such success at his late age (in Hollywood terms) is not very common.

  20. What do people who feel that Eugene has acted in a cowardly fashion in The Sanctuary think he should have done? I just can't see any other way he could behave if he hopes to survive. He's gone in there after seeing the Lucille deaths, Spencer's intestines liberated and he's been caught assisting with an assassination attempt of Negan, I don't understand what his detractors would have had him do?

Yea, do they have another doctor just sitting around in some apartment, twiddling his thumbs and waiting for his chance? Doctors sure as hell aren't replaceable. CDB has struggled to keep one. They've had a vet and a psychiatrist. Was Dr. Ben a true medical MD? Dr. Carson was, but into the fire with you. I like the character of Dwight, but from Negan's standpoint, I'm not sure what makes him so special. Unless he keeps him around just to torment him, and death would be too easy.

Every time anyone with medical training has died on the show I want to cry! So far Hershel; Denise; Bob (medic); Dr S (from the prison); the doctor from Slabtown (who the other dr killed); Porchdick (ok, I wasn't too upset when he died) and now Dr Carson. And no one has even thought to grab a first aid book on a run ?.

Maybe that's why he wanted to keep Dirty Daryl around, so that he'd have a replacement for Dwight ?.
