Don’t get me wrong, I do feel sorry for Ellen. Chris was the one that should have told her about Kim long before all this, and she didn’t ask to be in the situation. But I couldn’t help feeling that they used Kim as an excuse not to take Tam with them. You don’t want to take a child from their mother, but you don’t want to help both of them become US citizens because you don’t want Kim around to make you feel guilty, even though she wasn’t at fault either?

And let's be real - sure, it was the 70s when some (definitely not all) people were more open minded about things like interracial marriage, transracial adoption, etc. but realistically Ellen and Chris didn't want the embarrassment of having a kid who looked like neither of them and having to explain that Chris knocked up a prostitute while he was in Vietnam to their friends, family, Tam's teachers, etc. every time someone asked if he was adopted or asked why Tam didn't look like his dad. It was easier in every way to tell themselves that Tam belonged with his mother far far away in another country where no one that Ellen or Chris knew would ask questions and that sending some money every month would make everything okay. That way they got to tell themselves that they were doing the right thing without having to inconvenience themselves or feel awkward when people inevitably asked questions.

They saw Kim and Tam as part of the past and they wanted to leave them there, as in out of sight, out of mind, so that they could have their own little white picket fence life. Ellen initially refused Kim's request to take Tam back with them by saying that she and Chris wanted kids of their own, which seemed especially shitty to me, as if taking Tam to the United States to live with them would automatically ruin the idea of having kids that were biologically both of theirs.

I don't think water guy wanted him to chuck it all--just to take a week long vacay where Marcus wasn't focused on work (which he already was based on how he was describing the trip.)

But I don't think either of them wrong either.  Marcus did what he felt was best for him.  Water guy did what he felt was best for him. They were at an impasse.  The only thing I can say is that I think water guy, at least, realized that accepting what Marcus was now offering wouldn't make him happy so he decided to break it off.  I think he saw things clearly.

I don't think Marcus did.  I think Marcus is lying to himself and he may have a better title and more money but the situation which so largely dissatisfied him is unlikely to change because he chose not to demand change. And that would end up costing him the relationship he was building. When he looks back on it, though, he needs to not lie to himself about why it happened.  It's not unreasonable for a boyfriend/girlfriend, regardless of how long people have been going out, to what time dedicated towards building that relationship.

I think the bigger takeaway that the water guy was getting from the situation is that (1) Marcus will always prioritize Deborah above everything else, including Marcus' own happiness and (2) the water guy doesn't want to compete with that. He wasn't even asking Marcus to make him his #1 priority 24/7. He just wanted Marcus to loosen Deborah's grip on his life ever so slightly and he finally saw that Marcus has his identity and career too wrapped up in Deborah's to ever break free.

The sad thing is that as demanding as Deborah can be, if Marcus had told her he had a trip planned, she probably would have been willing to sit down, look at her calendar, and find a way to make it work (or at least find a different date that it could work) but Marcus is too afraid to even bring it up. There's loyal and devoted and then there's Marcus. I think the water guy saw that if Marcus can't even muster up the courage to tell Deborah he had a vacation planned, then he's never going to stand up for himself and that means if they stayed together, his future would be filled with all kind of last minute cancellations and interruptions caused by Marcus not being able to set some boundaries. I get that Marcus has a lot of responsibilities and that Deborah depends on him a lot, but the water guy is seeing a lot of dinners in his future where Marcus gets up and leaves because Deborah calls and Marcus won't even consider saying, "I'm in the middle of dinner but I'll take care of it in an hour." Marcus is so grateful to Deborah for giving him this career that he doesn't want to rock the boat at all. I can understand why the water guy doesn't want to stick around knowing that the only time they can spend together is on the periphery of Deborah's schedule and that even that can change at a moment's notice if she calls needing something.

  4. production on the final season of His Dark Materials has begun

    Quote

His Dark Materials returns to production with an epic third season of the BAFTA-winning BBC and HBO co-production based on Philip Pullman’s final novel in the trilogy – The Amber Spyglass – produced by Bad Wolf.

This series will see Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife and Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other.

New cast for season three includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Commander Ogunwe and Jamie Ward as Father Gomez. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Simon Harrison, and Chipo Chung are the rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch and Xaphania; while Ama will be played by Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe.

Returning cast also include Will Keen as Father President MacPhail, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi and Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala.

Plot synopsis for the beginning of S3:

    Spoiler

At the end of season two we saw Lord Asriel call upon the angels to help him wage a war against the Kingdom of Heaven as Mrs Coulter abducted her daughter Lyra to take her to ‘safety’ in their own world. Season three opens with Lyra unconscious, having been given a sleeping draught by her mother, as Will, still carrying the Subtle Knife, continues his quest to find her. Will is tracked down by two angels – Balthamos and Baruch – who wish to take him to join Lord Asriel’s campaign against The Authority with Commander Ogunwe. But Will is not the only one after Lyra, with Father President MacPhail continuing his mission to destroy the child of the prophecy, employing the help of his most committed follower, Father Gomez.

Meanwhile Oxford physicist Mary Malone reaches another parallel world – that of the Mulefa, a strange animal-like species. They tell her of a cataclysmic phenomenon in their world.

With multiple new worlds, including the Land of the Dead, returning characters and featuring strange new creatures the Mulefa and Gallivespians, the third season will bring Philip Pullman’s masterpiece to a dramatic conclusion.
