To me, dickishness would require him to be more thoughtlessly self-centered. Instead, I think he really is doing what he thinks is best on behalf of their work and saving lives. He has to make unpleasant decisions and serious sacrifices, and that has made him a bit of a hard-ass, but not one without conscience.

I just now started watching because I really like science fiction that asks us to look at a new technology and to extrapolate how it might work in the real world. There was a similar somewhat cheesy show a while back called "Century City" that was a cross between sci-fi and legal dramas. While the execution was a little... simple, there were some really great ideas presented. So when I found out that "Almost Human" was a cross between sci-fi and cop shows and it had a similar take on "how can this go wrong and what might we do about it", I had to check it out.
