  1. For those interested here is the interview with the real Katherine Johnson that I referenced in a previous post (she's asked about using the bathroom).

I Googled the pertinent dates--it's easy if you know how. The nominations period for the 89th Annual Academy Awards (the ones whose nominees were announced today) was January 5th-13th this year. The Golden Globes, where she made the speech, were held on January 8th this year.

I suppose it's a "draw your own conclusions" thing, as to how much Streep's anti-Trump speech & her subsequent nomination were related, depending on how many Academy members who bother to vote you think are early birds/vote closer to the opening of the nominations period or how many you think wait until closer to the last minute. The voting period for final nominations started 3 days before her speech & closed 8 days later, which was also 8 days after her speech. (I think I have that right.)

Considering this is her record-breaking (breaking her own record, I believe) 20th nomination (with, so far, 3 wins--2 for lead; 1 for supporting), she's obviously an Academy favorite. Her nomination this year may be just as simple as that: She's an Academy favorite.

Thanks for the tip. I have never heard about Google until you pointed it out! The more you know...

I'm surprised they were together in Nocturnal Animals and it barely got a mention. One day we should get a movie where they play sisters, or twins.

EDIT: For those who watched Florence Foster Jenkins, was Meryl Streep really good in it? I barely heard any talks about her being a shoo-in for Best Actress, although she was mentioned among the possibilities, but not among the Top 5. Amy Adams has always been in most everyone's predictions. I just don't want to think that this was Hollywood's way of rallying behind La Streep in terms of the recent controversy she was in.

I love Meryl but I thought FFJ was one of her weaker performances. For me, it's more of a problem that the movie had one trick and that was her terrible singing. After awhile it got tedious and I didn't feel there was much material there. It's one of those that I think would have been a great documentary but did not need to be made into a movie. Also, does anyone else think her nomination was a subtle FU to Trump? Or did the nominations have to be mailed in well before her Golden Globes speech? And yes, I feel like she took Amy Adams spot.

I do wish Hell or High Water got a little bit more love. It would have been great to see either Chris Pine or Ben Foster get a nomination along with Jeff Bridges. Very happy for La La Land though. I'm one of the ones who loved it and think it deserves all the praise it is getting.

  4. One that always stays with me is The War Zone directed by Tim Roth. I saw it years ago and it still haunts me. I’m putting the scene(s) in spoilers because I basically give away the plot (and it’s not pleasant).

    Spoiler

The scene I will never get over is where the bother sees his father and sister having sex in a hot tub. It was beyond disturbing for me and it was made worse by the sister seemingly not fighting her father off. You later find out he has been rapping her years but she has a sort of Stockholm syndrome going on. It all eventually comes to a head and the brother stabs the father in the stomach at the end of the film. One of the most difficult films I ever watched.

It won't win but Sing Street is far more deserving than La La Land, if only because we can ACTUALLY HEAR AND UNDERSTAND THE SINGERS. Seriously, how that didn't automatically disqualify La La is beyond me.

To me there was perfection in the imperfections of La La Land. I liked that the singing and dancing were not perfect. I found it oddly charming but I can see how it could be annoying for some.

It has been two weekssince I've seen it, and I can't stop listening to the soundtrack.

Same. I have not had a chance to see this a second time but the soundtrack is tiding me over until then! I was not expecting to fall in love with this movie but I did. My second favorite of the year so far (behind Hell or High Water).

  7. I caught an interview with the real Katherine Johnson yesterday and at 98 she’s still as sharp as a tack! She had this great banter with the interviewer. The one interesting thing though was he specifically asked her about the scenes where she had to run across campus to use the bathroom and she said that never happened, she just used the ones in the building she was working. I was kind of shocked to learn that because it was such a big deal in the movie but I’m guessing the scenes were added to illustrate the struggle and barriers the women faced on a daily basis.  Still a great movie though and all three leads do a wonderful job.

While the performances were excellent. This is what might be called a "gilded turd" not a particularly good film, but it resembles one. The problem is that there are no characters that one can root for or identify with except the dead brother, and he's dead.

I agree with all of your post except for the excellent performances part. With the exception of one exceptional scene by Michelle Williams the performances were not there for me. Nothing felt nuanced or natural. I don't understand all the accolades this thing is getting and the 97% at Rotten Tomatoes baffles me. It felt endless and very little worked for me. I will be greatly disappointed if this wins Best Picture. It absolutely pales in comparison with Hell or High Water

  9. I found myself rooting hard for David at the end and was disappointed to see him go. He really did play a great game. And man that bug bite on his cheek at FTC was so distracting!

This feels like a weak year for movies. The only thing that has stood out to me so far is Hell or High Water. I've yet to see Moonlight, La La Land, or Manchester by the Sea though so maybe one of those will blow me away.

As far as TV, I'll go ahead and say it, I don't get the Stranger Things or Mr. Robot hype. I watched both and was left wondering what I was missing. But otherwise pretty solid choices.

What kind of accent was Forest Whitaker doing, incidentally?  I couldn't place it.

A bizarre one. It actually took me out of the movie for a bit because I had a hard time understanding him and I could not find out why he was speaking with that accent. I have to agree with others who said they liked Sicario a bit more but this one still had some great moments. I did guess the reveal before it happened but it still packed quite the punch. I said to the person I watched it with that it felt like a Pro Choice/Pro Life subplot while at the same time not really making the argument for either side. Very well done.

  12. The best movie I’ve seen in a looooong time. It feels so authentic and timely and the acting is just top notch. I can easily see Jeff Bridges getting a supporting nomination. My only problem with it was that Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster tended to mumble their lines a bit. I know that was just part of the accent they were using but I really want to see it again with subtitles so I can pick up all the dialog that I missed!
